How times have changed. Never imagine the cryptocurrency teams take over the DC world.

In Folding@Home, Curecoin obliterates regular group like us. In the last few days, they are churning out like 500M+ PPD.

In BOINC projects, Gridcoin does the same thing based on their recent output.

The project owners must really be happy now. Some projects are beneficial for science and humanity, so this is good.

When the cryto$ crashes, I would imagine the opposite will happen but teams like us will continue....

What I fear if crypto would crashing people stop DCing because of the lack of money inflow. Imagine it's hard once got used to it to continue without.
I have also some early 1000CUR spinning on some disk but overall I don't appreciate the mono culture growing. But science will not care so there is no solution.

Why would someone mining for crypto currency want to contribute to DC? I'm not trolling... I just don't get it.

I've honestly wondered the exact same thing, Pocatello.

I'm not an expert but let's take curecoin for example. There is a website here which might explain your question, I think. Maybe this thread should be move out to cryto thread?

Hopefully no one jump from [H] to curecoin team, lol.

Also according to their website, they distribute 76% of the curecoin to folding members. That's a lot of crypto$

One reason why they are very active in folding at home. Not sure about GridCoin details...

With curecoin you have to join their team to earn their coins..
There is also Foldingcoin, you can fold for any team, but you have to have this crazy long user name that has what looks like a passkey in the name.
That way they know for sure you are who you say you are. Both are folding at home based coins.
If you look at curecoins member list, you will see users with that long user name. They are earning both curecoin and folding coin at the same time.
Together with that, and the other coin mining is causing a shortage of video cards, both AMD and Nvidia.

The reason why is obvious. If you can run DC and get a crypto coin payment for doing it, then you are essentially getting paid to do what most do for free. Reasons for doing this isn't just greed. Some take that money and put it into more DC gear, electricity, etc... So, it is good for DC when they set it up this way. Will Etherium bring more DC'ers? Probably not unless they come up with an incentive. Some BOINC projects are starting to support mining as an option (not a requirement) to simplify things for BOINC users as well. That might be the bridge that is needed. Again, why would a miner DC? Same reason many of us do. Spare hardware resources not being used.... They didn't know about DC before but now they do.... They got the bug and now want to actually use the hardware they have barely utilized for many years... Some may even want to learn more about it.... Lots of reasons.

For example, I recently started dabbling with BURST Coin because I had excess HDD space. Since the miner doesn't use much CPU, it really doesn't interfere much. If the coin gains value, I may actually have something to put towards DC. AFAIK it is the only HDD based mining coin out there. The downside... you have to have several TB's of HDD space to allocate to mining to make it worth the efforts...

Can't really blame folks, I mean when you're raising your electric bill and someone comes along and decides to finally reward you with something (somewhat) tangible compared to just doing it for free for over a decade.... Smart move really, surprised it took so long

Guess I didn't understand how it worked. My main thought was "why would someone who is focused on crypto mining want to allocate cycles to anything else?"; now I know. Now... BURST Coin, eh? I have, well, many TB at my disposal. :p

In less than a week, curecoin will take over the no. 1 spot in FAH. It is certainly a super-milestone as this event does not occur regularly.

They have 8 folders in the top 10 daily PPD as of today. The lowest churns out about 20M PPD.

They didn't really pass him, yet. They're just out producing him daily as of right now, barely.

That someone who passes Ed has 154 active clients (GPUs) currently active over the past 7 days when compare to Ed with 52. Good for FAH project.

I don't think clients = number of GPUs. A single rig w/ more than one GPU will show up as 1 client I believe. So Ed could have 52, quad SLI rigs while the other guy has 154 single GPU rigs for example. Still 154 clients is a lot no matter how you look at it. Shit, 52 clients are a lot.

I see. So Ed and the other guy does not have many 1080Ti then since one 1080Ti produces about 1.1M to 1.5M PPD or maybe they did not overclock but then FAH gets you more points with overclock. Still super-impressive.

Most likely no. Since they're also mining they're probably running AMD cards and most likely the mid-grade versions for the power/watt so they make more money off them. Just a guess. 52 1080Ti cards would be well over 52M PPD.

19 out of 20 top daily F@H producers are from Curecoin. Talking about GPU power in DC world (other than pure crypto mining).

Let see once BTC collapse how that will end; incl for those hosting companies sitting on all the rented GPU systems ; i still need to check some old disks, I might have some CUR spinning on those :geek:

I have never thought of dedicating my farm to some time spent on the [H] F@H team.

I wonder what several days out of the month with 41 1070 / 1070 Ti's would do for the team.

Anyone know? Would it be worth it? The electric would be negligible.

Curecoin averages 2.8B points per day. Holy fuck.

atp1916 we could use your vast farm on BOINC. Specifically, Formula-BOINC projects especially when the sprints start coming up. The first one starts on 3/22/2018 13:00 (UTC) and they only last 3 days. About 1/3 of the projects for Formula-BOINC utilize GPUs. Currently we are in a comfortable 1st place in the league, but it just started this month and anything can happen in the next 11.

each 1070 would earn around 600k points per day so that's at least 24million points per day for the F@H team, maybe 1 day a month for F@h and one for Boinc or split the farm in 2 for a couple of days

Curecoin's average is being flattered by a stats outage a few days back, their current average is 1.8-1.9bn points per day. Still massive though - I remember when we hit 1.9bn for the month.

Skillz I'll look into these Formula-BOINC projects. A couple days out of the month is not a serious impact on my mining operation, to be honest.

If you are interested then I can ping you when it's time. Just note that you'll need to register at these projects (its best to do it early and do a test run to ensure everything works.) and run them during the time needed. Sprints last for 3 days, but we are given a 24H notice to get things setup. Which is enough time to basically assign the project to your hosts, but not really enough time to troubleshoot issues without impacting the outcome of the sprint.

http://formula-boinc.org/ is the web site. We are in League 2 this year. I can get you a web site list of all the GPU projects if you'd like. You can spend the remainder of this month and next month sigining up for each project and running them for ~1 day or so to ensure they work correctly since we have till the 22nd of March till the first sprint.

Do note that your farm of ~41 GPUs would basically be over 75% of our teams total output. Probably more honestly.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you have any direct questions. I'll be happy to help.

Yeah I noticed that after I made the post. Seems it's calculating a ~6B point day into the average which should be over sometime tomorrow I believe. 1B+ PPD is still a massive number.

41x1070 could do some "serious damage" :nailbiting: .... on the standings of our dear competitors :)

Both F@H project (Team 33) could need some help; but also the BOINC- equivalent like GPUgrid (Team [H]ard|OCP); if you could assign some GPU from time to time over that would be AWSOME !! While I don't like too much some PrimeNumber-Oriented (e.g PrimeGrid; pure personal preference) project they also need some attention for short term events.

There are several reasons why Folding@Home associated coin production has become so successful.

Disclosure: I fold for "merged" folding teams, Team Curecoin and FoldingCoin Team.

- Interest in contributing to science and receiving compensation at the same time
- Mining without the need for highly specialized equipment
- No mining software necessary - all you need is team membership and Folding@Home (need the F@H passkey if you wish to be on both teams simultaneously - 'merged')
- The opportunity to play in the coin craze for a PURPOSE beyond self-enrichment - actually accomplishing something positive for humanity - electricity consumption not a waste
- To continue a hobby and doing good - computer building/tinkering and Folding@Home, and receiving support to continue (tangible rewards, if you realize gains, as in conversion to Bitcoin for retail purchase or US dollars for purchases or savings)
- The fun of playing in the cryptopcurrency market
- Entering the cryptocurrency market with no new expenses - risk free! (I already had the equipment and was already Folding)

In my case, my foray into the coin-Folding teams was influenced by all the factors above. I've been Folding since just a few months after the project started, over 15 years ago. I've been loyal and have employed powerful computers. The power costs and expense of keeping computers up to date has not been insignificant. Suffice it say that if all my expenses had been reimbursed, I could buy a new car tomorrow with cash. I never sought compensation, nor did I complain that compensation was not available. I believe in charitable giving and and want to make the world a better place. That, in conjunction with my hobby of computers, has been enough to justify the expenses of Folding@Home participation for over a decade and a half. If cryptocurrencies were to all collapse tomorrow and not revive, I would continue Folding.

When I discovered that Folding@home coupled with the coin craze really could offset my expenses, I jumped in. If and when the coin craze dies and cryptocurrencies implode, I will continue to participate in Folding@Home, albeit with computer upgrade intervals occurring less often.

Not to mention Gridcoin domination and their success in DC using crypto coin rewards too. If this works out, it will be great bonus for us here. I don't expect much but since it's there, just give it a shot and we will find out more during the course of the year.

I would imagine that without the coin awards, most of the long-term folders and crunchers that were contributing before the rise of the coin teams would continue their participation. Most of those who are strictly in it for the coins, would, yes, probably drop out. The net effect on the projects though, would probably be minimal. By "net effect" I mean the rate of post-craze participation compared to the rate of participation before the craze began.

(Yes I do consider coins/cryptocurrency to be a 'craze.' Additionally, it is not 'investing' as some refer it; rather it is speculation. Big difference. But, as long as I'm making money for something I was already doing, let the craze run long and hard!)

I hope the BOINC coin-earning project(s) will benefit as much as Folding has. I think it's just marvelous that good DC projects are getting such a tremendous boost lately. I crunched for [H] two years on a handful of BOINC projects. Salute!

Skillz Thanks for the run-down. That list of GPU projects would be excellent. I've been messing around a bit with several of the projects and have had no problems getting at least this machine's 7 1070 Ti's up.

It would be a slight bit of work to get each machine crunching, but my NVidia cards do not require the fine-tuning and prayers that AMD cards have required. Lil bit of RDP here n there and we are set.

A control program for multiple rigs (ala Awesome Miner) would be quite handy...

Every little bit helps. 7 - 1070's is nothing to sneeze at and blows everything I have outta the water. Any contribution would be much appreciated.

atp1916, welcome to the world of DC. Your army of GPUs will make a big difference to our team.(y)

atp1916, look into the rprogram called BOINCTasks - https://hardforum.com/threads/efmer-boinctasks.1848989/ and I highly recommend using BOINCStats BAM! account manager as well - https://hardforum.com/threads/how-to-setup-up-boincstats-bam.1930993/

I was just posting a reply directing you to BOINCTasks (works best if all computers are on the same LAN) and BAM! (doesn't matter if they're on the same LAN or not). I use both to manage my small army of boxen.

If you want to point whore, Collatz will reward you the most points overall by a long shot. The project isn't really producing much except furthering math hobbyist's interest as there is not yet a real world application for it that I know of. Make sure to install the C++ version listed on their home page. Install both x86 and x64 versions. Also, take a look at our Collatz thread and ask questions about how to maximize your production as there is a huge difference doing it.
GPUGrid pays well. Especially if you return work units within 24 hours as they give you up to a 50% bonus for early returns. The downside is that they can run out of work regularly. So, make sure to have another project as a backup.
PrimeGrid's PPS Sieve work units pay well for nVidia cards as well. However, this is yet another math project and the sieve apps have no chance in finding a prime. The GFN work units take much longer to complete and are double Precision. You can find primes with this one but doesn't pay out as well with nVidia. AP27 has GPU but I do not recall how well it pays compared to the others.
Amicable Numbers pays out decent. Again a math project.
SETI pays out terrible and the science is pretty slim to actually have real reward.
Einstein pays low but actually have some merit for real physical science.
Asteroid (last time I looked) was only slightly quicker than running on CPU. So, probably not a huge reward for the GPU's on that project.
BURP is just video rendering, but haven't had much in the way of GPU work units for a while.
Enigma is just cracking encrypted messages. It serves no real world benefit outside of historical reference.
Albert@home (not in formula-boinc) is just the Alpha project for Einstein. No real reason to run it unless you just feel like it.
SETI.BETA is clearly just a BETA site for SETI and is also not in formula-boinc
DrugDiscovery@home sometimes has GPU work units available but not always.
Gerasim sometimes has GPU work as well. I'm doubting the research is actually useful in real world applications. But, I'm not a scientist...lol
Milkyway@home is another physical science project. Double Precision is what matters here. Clearly AMD rules this project.
Moo! Wrapper is just a BOINC wrapper for the RC5-72 project at distributed.net and is trying to crack an encrypted message. Pretty much not useful anymore.
XANSONS for COD runs out of work quick and often. Has lots of dry spells.

And for easy reference to threads on all of these, please consult my list here - https://hardforum.com/threads/all-inclusive-dc-project-list-v-2.1895029/
