While the DIY computer hardware enthusiast is the guy that is getting screwed over the worst with this GPU shortage that fully lays at the feet of cryptocurrency mining, there has been somewhat of a "loophole" if you were desperate. That loophole has been to buy a pre-built box from a boutique company or one of the big box builders like Dell or HP. Well have no fear, because at least one boutique builder is cashing in on the mining craze, further removing video cards from the GPU pool for gamers. Maingear will soon let you buy its new UNIKRN Advanced Crypto Miner with up to six GPUs on board with UnikoinGold (UKG) cryptocurrency.

MAINGEAR is proud to announce a strategic partnership with Unikrn, a leading esports brand. MAINGEAR will be breaking new ground into crypto mining with co-branded UnikoinGold (UKG) crypto-mining capable PCs — the MAINGEAR ACM Advanced Crypto Miner and MAINGEAR ACM PRO — available later this year.

As long as crypto mining is seen as a way to make, protect and hide money, and I think that's just the way it's going to be forever now, there's going to be more for demand for GPUs or at least their calculation capabilities. This level of speculation is clearly unsustainable but crypto mining is an inherently speculative concept. We're just in a great unknown, there is no easy fix and we have no idea how the invisible hand is going to work long term. The only things that I think are reasonably sure is that crypto mining is here to stay, it is a new market for GPUs, but where we are now isn't sustainable,

Well crap. Everytime I see something like this my hope to get a video card upgrade, this year (at a reasonable price), wanes a little bit more. Nevermind building a new system.

It is not just frustrating. It is exasperating.

Yes, yes, take a deep breath.....maybe a few more times........shit,...it aint working.

No price on site, no specs, mine their coin . Not in stock. Very sad since it looks to be for luring in the newbee.

Maybe someone should come up with a crypto that runs best on 56K modems?
The problem is that by the time a coin moves on to ASICs, 10 more GPU mineable coins have take its place

A big issue is some of the newer coins use the CyrptoNight algorithm which is currently cost prohibitive to design an ASIC to mine for. The plan was to make sure any coin using that algorithm can never be mined on an ASIC and so far its working. But if I were to buy that system I could care less about ETH or UKG, I'd rather mine XMR like I do on CPUs right now.

So, after AMd and nVidia find out about this... are they going take Maingear off of its system builder partner list or not?

I had a friend of mine ask me the other day asking why were video cards so high lately. I had to bring him up to speed on Bitcoin, which kind of surprised me that he didn't know anything about Cryptocurrency at all.

There are quite a few people who have never heard of it when I mentioned it. It's really weird. Could be that we all are just weird. Both? :)

I think this is great for making money! I am surprised more have not done this.

Maybe it will get AMD/Nvidia making more cards.

If anything, the crypto scene sure is making a ton of money for NVIDIA & AMD. They are the real winners in all of this.

Not really at this point. The money on the cards themselves is being made at retail and reselling.

Not so much in markup, but in overall quantity.

Good point, they are selling all of their supply currently. Part of the problem though and why just ramping up production volume could be problematic is that there's a lot of hoarding going on and bursting bubbles could end up with a lot of relatively cheap secondary supply hitting the market.

I think there are many that heard of it and still do not understand it. Then again there are so many different versions out now I definitely do not understand it all. :(

I'd gladly buy a prebuilt crypto rig from a reputable manufacturer for a small upcharge. Maybe I don't want to figure out the nuances between 15 different GPU risers etc.

Plus at least this gets computer makers a slice of the action instead of the total BULLSHIT pricing from retailers such as Newegg.

The title should read "Not enough GPU's for miner's causing spike in price's that gamers are crying about"
We all know 10 series cards are at end of production. Normally the manufacture would be offering nice rebates to clear stock. Mining and general flipping has caused stock to plummet instead of trickle of selling EOL cards. Demand just happens to be high during the change in production. 10 series has been out almost 2 years so I don't get the whole "I can't upgrade now" bullshit. New cards will be rolling out soon.

I said "cryptocurrency" at a lunch with the in-laws this last weekend......the mother-in-law through a tomato at me and said, "You damn better watch your mouth,...there are children present!". I am still struggling to figure out what she heard and no, I am not going to ask.

All I could think was, "About right.....why not.....the cryptocrazies are winning at every level...."

I would of asked.....

It's just supply and demand. If no one wanted these boxes then no one would buy them. Why even bother chastise a company for trying to make some money?

Probably because their shot at "just making a buck" is directly affecting every pc enthusiast (especially gamers) and making life hell for us. They are exasperating the situation all so they can make a buck.

They can go to hell.

All it would take is for 6 of you to organise yourselves...

Surely better than just 1 guy buying a pre-built, silver lining an all that... ;)

Yup. In a mining boom, don't be the guy digging for gold, be the guy selling the shovels.
