If you think for one minute that Google is about to be regulated as a utility, think again. Interestingly, the $13.6M spent by Alphabet in 2017 represents a 12% decrease compared to what the company spent in 2016. You have to wonder why all this lobbying is needed.

The search giant doled out $13.6 million on lobbying firms like Prime Policy Group and Gephardt Group, edging out the $13.2 million spent by AT&T, which is facing government opposition to its takeover of Time Warner Inc. for $85 billion. The figures were compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Ever since the guy who coined the "Don't be evil" motto was run off, Google has been neck deep in politics.

I think some people are going to see some unexpected ties between politics and social media exposed this year, and some social media giants may be in some DEEP shit...

Social media is a useful tool to combat the evils of democracy, many politicians like that, that's why it's their new battleground.

It must be all about team politics, right? Certainly it's not about their vast repository of data and their right to do with it whatever they want. Everything is about team politics, especially when so many poeple one team is God's team and the other teams (or team) must be the Antichrist. Maybe, just maybe, they lobby so they don't have to deal with regulation effecting their profits. Especially when so much of their business is based on acquiring deeply personal information about people, something the people have a certain, innate distaste for. They're just using money to make sure their voice is louder than the voice of the people.

Lobbying is a disease.

One of two responses to this; a) you're just inherently wrong about anyone being in "DEEP shit" (ideological belief) or b) it's been happening for decades just through different avenues (ie the difference in what "news" you get from Fox News vs CNN vs (real news) Reuters/BBC Int). All are trying to twist to their "base" and what is real to you is real to you... unless you actually seek unbiased fact reporting but as we all know that doesn't happen in social media, television, or hell the world much anymore... including tech forums.

"You have to wonder why all this lobbying is needed"

Really, have you seen the FCC lately?

man, it's so easy to bribe politicians

ONLY 13 million ?
That's just what they spent on a lobbying firm, I'm sure they have given much more to superPACs that actually give money directly to the politicians.

Google is heavily invested in both the FCC Internet rulings and the Immigration reform. Two very large issues last year. This isnt strange or unexpected imo.

Lol. Ok.

You're going to be in for a shit ton of unpleasant surprises this year. Ha!

That's not really a valid argument or rebuttal to what I stated... Are you then saying that Fox News and CNN should be punished for pushing their political ideologies as well? Because Google has exponentially more funds and utilizes lobbying to advance the organization and it's ideologies they for some reason will be punished because it doesn't align with yours? Sounds like a f'in dictatorship then.

I don't need to rebut anything.

The rebuttal happened November 8th, 2016.

Now I just get to kick back and watch the destruction of a thoroughly corrupt and imbecilic political party by a man they think is a toddler, all while they think that same "toddler" is destroying his own political party.

The Cognitive dissonance that will happen won't even do the "this is fine" meme justice.

Laws were broken. The head of the NSA has everything. The IG report will send shockwaves that will ripple through news and social media, as its revealed who in these institutions took money from the DNC to push narratives given to them.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Game over.
