A San Francisco couple who were mistakenly identified as iPhone thieves have detailed their harrowing encounter with local police. The mix-up seems to have occurred because Mr. Garci and Ms. Knuth had the misfortune of purchasing an iPhone X from a store that happened to be robbed for hundreds of these handsets weeks earlier.

“I was just wrapped up in a towel,” Knuth said. Even more humiliating was what the officers did when she asked for clothes. “One officer went into my closet and they chose an outfit they got a bra and a thong and some stretchy pants and handed it to me and said ‘will this do?’” Knuth said.

The police fucked up big time on this one. No rights, detaining without explaining anything, injuring *snickers* his wrists XD

Really though, yeah some police action on this it sounds like. But this fucking guy sounds like he is ready to try and suck off a bull for some milk. A wrist injury from the cuffs affecting his work as an architect. I did four years of drafting classes, if they injured you so badly you can’t draw a line on a straight edge or use a keyboard and mouse in CAD you need to be in a hospital.

So I'm confused, how was their a warrant out for his arrest? Because there was a record of him activating his iPhone? Who fucking reported it too? The Apple Store? Don't they have like unique MAC addresses on each phone and can tell which one were the 300 stolen? (sounds like an inside job and they decided to try and cover their tracks by linking to other stock).

That said, something about those two rubs me the wrong way, he tried to defend his wife ... ooh ok then... interview with their prized dog in it sitting like it's portrait time, unfortuately that's what what most imagine as typical San Franciscians

There was zero reason for him to be injured at all. No excuse.

Lazy police work. No idea who is behind the door of an apartment, just bash it down and find out.

They could have just told him that they got a report of stolen iphones and would like to check his to make sure it isn't one of them. If it is, arrest them.

This idea of handcuffing people and detaining them like that is unreasonable. Of course the guy is gonna put on a pity me act, he's going to sue the living hell out of them, as I would if I was treated that way. Police will often assume the worst of you and you won't be treated with any dignity, because to them it's guilty until proven innocent. Any other developed country wouldn't do this.

It might seem that way, but to be honest I was once arrested when at a party (long story) and was handcuffed with the zip-tie type of cuffs. it was pulled BLOODY tight and was agonising when driving in the car with my hands behind my back to the station.

For about 3 months afterwards due to nerve damage, the thumb and part of the index finger on my right hand were numb and with almost no sensation.

I'm not saying that in this case his claim is legitimate, but I can tell you that if cuffed too tightly, and if left on for a long time, it really can do some damage.

The police in this country are out of fucking control. Even in a so called liberal city like San Francisco.

It's time to stop fucking around and it's time to start docking pensions and pay.

remember the movie screamers?

that's pretty much where we are at with police.

you can't reign them in. it's like a fully functioning organism.

Sounds like Apple uses the SF police as a gestapo.

Once upon a time there were things called 'handcuffs'. Being made of metal I'm sure they're much more expensive than zip ties, but zips cost pennies even though they were never intended for human restraint.

Operator error.

Handcuffs can be done up pretty bloody tight as well though...

Not the 1st time SFPD has done favors for Apple. In the past someone in the SFPD went out of their way to help Apple with a lost prototype phone.

SFPD has an officer posted at the Apple store pretty much around the clock, I wonder if Apple pays for that privilege.

I don't get why you folks put up with public servants acting like this...
Or why there even is a culture of crazy police violence - surely they can see it harming their image, creating a far more difficult working environment for them etc. etc. etc.

People like the story are written about us the reason why I stay on my side of the bay bridge if possible.

Still what the fuck were the cops thinking on this one?

AND obtain proof and a valid warrant.
