1150 CPU wasn't a popular choice?

I have an socket 1150 motherboard as my Plex server with a low power Intel i3 4130t in it. I'm fairly happy with its performance based on my needs but I always keep an eye out for a good deal in the For Sale section for someone offloading there old i5/i7 1150 CPU's but it seems that 99% of the time, they're 1155, 1151, 2011, etc.

This leads me to wonder, was the 1150 socket a short lived socket? I picked up my system for a deal I couldn't refuse from a member here so it's what I have but I don't seem to see a lot of others out there with the same socket board. Comments anyone?

I thought the socket 1150 CPUs were very good and I still have a 4690K system.
I recently sold off my 4790K when I upgraded my main system to an 8700K.

Yes, Intel does like to play musical sockets though.

Just keep an eye on listings here and on Ebay, people are all the time off loading older CPUs.
Wait for a good price on a 4690K or a 4790K.

.

its just too recent, most wouldn't be upgrading yet though with coffee lake some may be, i picked up a 4670k locally on craiglist a month ago for 120 bucks

I have 3 1150 based systems. The platform is great & I don't have to buy DDR4. My last system I pickedup an E3-1240v3 on ebay for like $140 like a year ago. Great purchase. I'd love to have more cores & better arch, but I simply can't swallow 32G of ddr4 cost.

i7-4770, $140 shipped
e3-1245v3, $170 shipped
i7-4770T, $190 shipped

Also, if you look through this list, these are all socket 1150. Anything that is "1230v3" or better is 4 core 8thread.

Heh, nice to see the quad core xeon's are finally dropping in price. I went cheap with one mini server a few years ago, got an i3 and should have just bought e3 for $100 more. The $50 price difference on those T models though, ugh. I've always hated them for that. Pointless for most people to get the "low power save the earth" model.

Thanks for the links, now to wait for prices to drop a bit more haha

I generally agree with you. The only reason I have a T model is because it was a package deal and I did look the fact that since the system is up 24/7 and I don't demand too much of it, it will sip the power no matter what I do. I also have it passively cooled so even if every case fan in my server goes it, it won't have a meltdown.

I'm not sure how much cheaper 1150 4c/8t are going to get. I don't see them much changed from a year ago.
I think yoiu may be able to get a 4c/4t for around $100...look for 4570/4590, 4670/4690 or e3-12xx where xx is less than 30.

well... if what [H] says and other sources say is correct that intel isn't interested in bios updates for anything older that X99 for the spectre vulnerability then the price of haswell desktop cpu's could plummet shortly as folks upgrade and unload these now vulnerable systems.

My wife's IVY box already has a a bios update...

Sounds like it is very manufacturer dependent at this point. My father's X99 Gigabyte board doesn't have a bios update for it yet, but my X299 Aorus has one. My X58 Sabertooth...not holding my breath ;).

Same here, my X79 main system I don't see getting an update even though it's an Asus ROG board.

Yep.

I see more updates for pre-builts (business focused -- My wife's machine is an Optiplex) than stand alone motherboards.

in the front page news section there has been significant discussion of this...

Kyle has said that the message from board makers and intel is to not expect firmware upgrades for motherboards older than X99...

not because it isn't possible (as you have seen many prebuilt rigs already have the patches) but just because they aren't going to do it.

I assume with the dell's and whatever they probably have service contracts with business that would require them to update these systems?? or whatever?? or they just don't want to tick their customers off.. not sure but blah blah blah so far sounds like homebrew hasswell or older you are fairly boned, while OEM systems w/ these Processors probably will get updates.

which personally leaves me with really bad 'feels' about this whole deal ... for the more "adventurous" some are already modding the bios for their boards with the updated microcodes... HOWEVER.. many seem to be having errors / stability problems after doing so.. I haven't ruled out trying to go this route but I am waiting for more 'beta testers' to get whatever sorted / newer updated microcode patches to hopefully correct problems with initial update.

but blah blah blah.. I expect many people to move off these rigs and the secondary market to reflect that higher supply of used 1150's w/ lower prices..

The whole situation leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I think I"m leaning more & more towards off-lease biz machines, and upgrading the cpu/graphics/storage these days rather than building my own.

If I'm spending $150-$400 on an enthusiast board I expect to get stuff like bios updates for more than 6-18 months. If not, why buy them?

With some pre-builts coming with graphics cards that coast as much as buying the graphics card separately, there is even more reason to move away from building your own.

Edit: Just snagged 2 more Thinkstation S30s for $100 ea with E5-2609, 8G ram, 2 x 500G hard drives, Quadro 400. I'm going to throw in an 8 core, 16 thread for $75-$175..

$175-$275 ea, all in!

Which boards that are only a year and a half or newer aren't getting bios updates? I built my X99 system ~30 months ago, and most x99 boards should be getting bios updates. My particular board has had a bios update available since Jan 12th.
