BWM Loves the Death of Net Neutrality

Yet the integrated navs are usually terrible, clunky and quickly outdated, and - surprisingly - actually lower a cars resale value.

In the cars I've driven that have had them, I've usually just used my phone for nav instead instead as it does so much better of a job.

I have yet to drive a car with Android auto though. If it successfully integrates my phone's nav, I'd love that.

I don't want any Apple crap in any car I'd buy.

The new generation of APP driven NAV units are excellent.

I've updated the firmware on my now old Pio unit but from time to time I pine for one of the latest APP units. And they are much cheaper than what I paid for my Z130bt back then.

The all caps APP is confusing me.

Do you just mean app as in application on something like Android Auto, or is APP some acronym I am unfamiliar with?

Just means you can run apps on the units, but they are both Android Auto and Apple Carplay capable. There's a big section on XDA with ppl running modded roms and shit. It's basically an extension of your phone with a preamp that drives multiple cameras, and displays that has output sections to run your amps, etc.

I just put $3,300 into my 2009 Volvo S80 T6 with 140k miles on it, so I'll probably have that for another 100k miles, but eventually I'll get around to owning a car with something like this.

*Sigh*

Did you have to replace the rear differential?

Nope. The drive assembly for the water pump seized up, taking the serpentine belt, pre-tensioner, water pump, vacuum pump, power steering servo and all the pullies with it.

This resulted in the engine overheating slightly which killed the thermostat, but luckily enough does not seem to have damaged the internals or the head gasket. The thermostat used to be easy to replace on Volvo's but on this model in order to access it you have to take the goddamned intake manifold off.(Thanks Ford)

I replaced the rear differential seals and rear struts last year, bringing my 6 month maintenance costs up to almost 6 grand.

That being done though, I've replaced pretty much everything that is high budget that will go wrong, so hopefully I'm good for another 100k.

I used to do all my own work, but these days I just don't have the time. My mechanic has been working on nothing but Volvo's since the 70's. The loaner I got is a 1998 Volvo V70 wagon with a straight 5 turbo, has 320k miles on it and runs like new.

I've never kept a car past ~120k miles, so this is a first for me. I got it as an off lease with 30k on it 4 years ago. Now I'm up to 140k and counting. We'll see where it goes from here.

Very unusual. Normally before any type of seizure there is noise that comes from the bearings that can last days if not weeks. In my experience, I've never seen a water pump on one of these seize. Usually its a belt idler bearing or tensioner that goes bad, or even more commonly, the AC compressor clutch. The belt will shred into strings and may appear the water pump seized as the pieces of the belt wrap themselves around everything. Vacuum pump is run directly off the intake camshaft and not belt driven at all so I would question that. My guess is the vacuum pump had been leaking engine oil for some time and when it leaks, it leaks onto the drive belt. A swollen belt will come apart like I mentioned before. Otherwise its a good engine. Intake manifold only takes a few minutes to take off but you don't need to take it off to replace the thermostat, it just looks that way.

Well, it was screeching for the week or so before, but it happened to coincide with our ridiculous cold spell. Normally I would have looked into it, but I assumed it was just the 0 degree cold causing it to complain, and that it would go away when it warmed up.

The cause wasn't the water pump itself but the little gearbox assembly, or whatever it is caused that is connected to it. Accessory drive gear? Water pump coupler? I can't remember.

Either way, repair cost hurt, but now this puppy is running like new again, purring like a kitten. Much better than any car I've ever owned with 140k miles on it.

I do know my hydraulic motor mount is leaking which will eventually become a problem, but other than that I'm hoping I'm done with big repair costs for now.

I just wish the goddamned cabin air blower assembly were easier to replace. The fan bearings are going on it and it is annoyingly noisy. Every thing works perfectly except for the screeching bearing noise from the blower fan at certain speeds (usually everything in the middle. It's normal at high fan speed and low fan speeds)

My 2002 WRX Wagon has 55K miles on it and its got JDM Ver 7 twinscroll setup with a hybrid STI motor. My wife thinks its a clunker lol, little does she know. I set it to run no added boost just the spring at 7psi daily so she doesn't notice. The stock radiator finally died on it and I stuffed in an alu racing unit with trans cooler myself.

While generally, I agree, Honda, Toyota, Ford (except the new sync 3), Nissan etc. are pretty horrible. But I really like the Audi and new Mercedes Benz systems. Audi has google earth through Audi Connect and MB has the Command system also google maps and they work great, some of them also work with HUD's so I dont even have to look down to see the next entry. Also the screens now are huge, look at the new E class. I have never used a good aftermarket infotainment system, and they just look cheap. But in this forum I can see the Apple hate so I understand people when they dont want it.

CarPlay really doesn't add that much value to iDrive unless you have to have your infotainment screen look like an Apple product. The built in Navigation is much better than Apple Maps and is obviously fully integrated into the HUD which none of the CarPlay apps are. It's easier to just use bluetooth for the iPhone connection and control things that way.

Thanks. They said it couldn't be done at the time I did it. The factory option was over 5K for the crap disc based OEM option. The Pio unit, rear display, paint matching, and stuff cost me around 1.5K so I came out ahead. And yea I agree, they are making it very hard for folks to install aftermarket systems. Our Tribeca's system was integrated with the HVAC controls drawing power thru the stock head unit's amp, etc. It was a pain in the ass figuring out which boards I could toss, etc. I eventually got it sorted as the pics kind of show so all is good.

Yeah, insane that car makers still charge this much for a navi/entertainment which should be standard on all cars by now. Not to mention many suck big time and you have to pay to update them and get new maps. So yeah, definitely see the appeal for a standard double din unit. But damn, that's a lot of work especially with the other stuff they integrate into the HU. I kind of wish they would still put double din unit but mfr probably realize that then folks just get aftermarket.

Bluetooth and a lil velcro magic is all ya need! I went to buy a lease vehicle that had the kinks knocked out and the sales guy kept pushing me towards the more expensive models with the integrated "smart" consoles. I held up my Galaxy Note, showed him the fuzzy on the back and told him it'd cost me less than two dollars to upgrade any standard console model to exactly what I need without paying monthly for Sirius and Onstar mobile.:panda: *speechless*

The sales manager overheard the discussion, shook my hand and told me I'd have free oil changes for a year on any vehicle I bought off the lot.:D

At my first oil change, I found out the sales guy was the managers son-in-law and he'd never so soundly been put in his place by a customer :ROFLMAO: Velcro-1 Vehicle Innovation-0
