Best messaging app besides samsung messenger app?

Hi, I have a lot of friends who use an iPhone and Android. I've been using the built-in Samsung messenger app for ages and want to you something a bit better. What should I use? What is the best all-around media rich and generally fast good messaging app that would be an upgrade from Samsung's default? Thanks for the help I appreciate it!
 
I like Messenger (the Facebook one.). Story is that it no longer requires a Facebook account. Cannot verify.

Also, you could use Kik to message between devices.
 
I like the stock Google messaging app. And, believe it or not, I also like Verizon Messenger. Both are simple and work very well. Verizon app will work on any phone.

Android Messages from Google.

Works great for group messaging and MMS between Android and iOS users, unlike a lot of the stock SMS apps that come with various other OEMs. I know on some previous Samsung phones I've had, MMS was pretty busted when trying to send pics/vids to or from iOS users (pics would show as video slide shows or something stupid and be terrible quality).
 
I've been using Pulse for a few days. I'm a long time Textra user, but felt like trying something different. Pulse is very good and can be used across iOS, Android, and your PC/Mac.
 
RIP hangouts. You were supposed to be the chosen one. The killer of iMessage.
 
So to replace the stock messaging app... Textra.. a lot of what's been recommended are not replacements but different platforms all together which would also require the other person to buy into said different platforms.
