Server Board question - Asus KCMA-D8

Hey all, I have an older Asus KCMA-D8 from early 2011 currently running with 4130 CPUs on board. I'd love to upgrade it to 4386 chips since they've gotten cheaper on eBay but I'm at a loss on the Asus documentation of CPU support.

Their page (here) makes it sound like there's a minimum serial number and BIOS version to run the newer chips. I don't follow... if I update the BIOS version while my old chips are in and then swap to the 43xx I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work but their 42xx/43xx support page seems pretty clear that you have to have the newer/later serial number.

Does anyone have one of these, an old serial, and 42xx or 43xx chips? I'd rather not throw cash at them and then pull the system and swap parts only to find out they still won't work since I don't have another use for the 4386 CPUs at this point.

I did some looking around online already and couldn't find a clear answer as to if the serial number thing mattered for anything other than meaning I'd need to update the BIOS version.

If they specify a serial number that usually indicates they did a hardware revision at that point. And in this case it sounds like the power delivery sub-system were upgraded or something like that. To support newer CPUs.

So basically updating the bios to the latest version on a old serial motherboard would give you the necessary bios code to support later CPU models, but you could risk melting something too.

They list PCB version R1.02 for all chips on their site otherwise I'd have come to that same conclusion. Seemed odd that they didn't list any PCB changes but mentioned the serial number thing. *shrug*

Edit: And the newer chips are the same TDP ranges; 41xx-43xx all max TDP at 95w.

sounds like a split power plane type issue; I bet the newer chips will POST but might behave strangely
