Dark Souls is on Steam

You can tell by the trailer that there are new models at the very least, and higher resolution textures. Not sure if the textures will be amazing, but Souls games never really had amazing textures. Everyone looks to be tessellated or reworked meshes (tree, bonfire, etc).

yeah I'm thinking the lighting and textures will be the biggest upgrades...I always loved the way the bonfires activated in Dark Souls 2 where you see the smoke and embers flying around...very cool effect...

rumors are that the Steam remastered edition may have a 50% discount for those that already own the game...so instead of $40 it might be a more reasonable $20...hopefully this is true...

That would be amazing. But, I'm not gonna hold my breath for it. and I don't think most anyone should expect it. Dark Souls Prepare to die edition was FREQUENTLY on sale. Such that the majority of owners probably didn't pay more than $5 for it. I still have have a couple of extra keys on my steam, for which I payed $2 each, on steam. Not from those grey market game key sites or even from a reputable alternative such as Green Man Gaming. and that was from a time when the port was still relevant and relatively recent.

Honestly I don't mind paying full price again. I just want it. Though it would be a good gesture to give a discount to people who own Prepare to Die Edition due to the technical issues it had.

After reading the addendum, I'm now curious what the differences will be. Obviously it will be REALLY 60fps (rather than the DSFix hacks) and have higher resolution textures (also possible via hacks), but it sounds like they're otherwise trying to keep it the same. I paid full price for the original, so I'd certainly rather pay $20 for it, but $30 is still fair. $40 feels steep IMO.

Since it is being moved to the updated engine it should fix the jump distance issue with 60fps that DSFix couldn't and allow resolutions up to 4k which DSFix was flaky with, i never had issues with DSFix but I have a friend who did. Textures will be 2K Uncompressed on PC, which should be an improvement. This is about all we officially know other than the 6 players in a world and dedicated servers, etc. Need more footage of the actual game. I will be buying it regardless, but I can understand why people wouldn't pay again for it.

Yea I got it for me and my buddy at 8 bucks a pop. Considering how much enjoyment I've got out of it, I would welcome giving the devs some more money for their efforts

If the price stays at $40, I'll probably go the CDKeys route. Based on their typical discounts, I bet they'll have it for $29.

EU Community Manager responds to a Reddit thread about PC Gamer saying there will be no discount:

Which pretty much means there may be a discount but still unconfirmed by Bandai Namco.

I'm pretty sure that there will be a discount of some sort for owners of the original on Steam...I hope it's 50% like the leak suggests but there will definitely be one...every remaster I own I believe had a discount- Sleeping Dogs, Bioshock collection etc

the official press release states- Native 4K, all textures 2K unconverted for PC...so what does the native 4K refer to?

so much confusion regarding this remaster...they're not saying if it's on the Dark Souls 3 engine, not saying if there will be a discount for current owners etc...hopefully From Software clears things up soon...I'm a huge From Software/Souls fan so I'm getting the remaster regardless of the price and engine being used but it would be nice to know more details

4K rendering resolution. No need for a third party tool. Not 1080p upscaled to 4K. Its true 4K resolution option. Textures are 2K.

DS1 matchmaking was pretty bonkers with the IP-pooling and soul level being the chief determinants. I hope they integrate some the of QoL and matchmaking changes from DS2 in the remaster, but I'm not holding my breath. Actually a bit more disappointed that they didn't take this opportunity to "remaster" a game that TRULY needed it: Demon's Souls. Would have made an amazing PC debut...

I wish they had made a Scholar of the First Sin version of the original Dark Souls...along with the better graphics it would have been nice to see different enemy placement and item locations etc...would have made the game seem new again...

Now what would be really cool is if it's "Prepare to Die" Edition (complete) and oh by the way they come out with two additional (new) DLC on top of that.

I was actually pretty excited when the initial reports indicated it was Dark Souls 1 with Dark Souls 3 graphics and assets. The PC version can already be made to look fantastic as-is, so something new sounded appealing. Yet I think this is mainly for the consoles. DS1 a complete generation behind, so this is more for them than PC players. This should keep the purists happy while not requiring all that much work.
I'm still going to get it, but it's more to support the project than full-on excitement. I do really hope it looks and works better than DSFix and HD textures, though. It would be kind of sad it it doesn't.

I'll be happy with 60fps jumping being fixed and we won't need Wulf's connection program. I'm looking forward to playing again either way. Also it's bound to cause a player surge, atleast temporarily.

seems like all the Souls game are always pretty well populated as far as players but yes the first game probably is less so due to the nature of the port...this will definitely cause a major uptick in players which should make pvp a lot easier (plus more invasions!)...I guess for the new players who need the help it also means more summoning assistance (although I hate summoning...breaks the game in my opinion by making everything Easy mode...so for the people who keep complaining about the lack of a difficulty setting, this is it...summoning= difficulty slider)

Yea I don't summon for PvE, but really looking forward to invasions/being invaded. My last play through on DS1 I wasn't even invaded at all in NG which was kind of disappointing lol. I think I maybe got invaded once in Anor Londo and it was by someone with infinite health and Watchdog flagged it and I just ended the connection. DS3 has been the game for me to play in the last 2 years if I want PvP, never ran into any cheaters and it has always been very active. DS1 was fun when it was fresh though and I think we'll probably get a good experience.

I bet there's an influx of people for all 3 of the games once this remaster hits. That's been the case any time a new game or DLC hits. I know I tend to pop back into the older games just to get re-acclimated with the ebb and flow of the game. Plus, after playing Bloodborne and (especially) Nioh, the games feel a bit slow by comparison. I'm sure I'll put at least a few hours into the DSFix version of DS1 before playing the remaster.

I've been playing the Scholar of the First Sin version of DS2 for the past few weeks...so much fun...I think DS2 might have the best multiplayer pvp...I've been playing pvp non-stop with the Dragon covenant...no shortage of players whatsoever...game is filled with players all the time either as far as summoning or pvp

one more thing as far as summoning...I really wish From Software would limit summoning...make it so you need to obtain an item which allows you a max number of summoning options per playthrough (2 or 3 max)...that way players wouldn't be able to summon for the entire game and would force them to think about where they really need help versus basically making the entire game an Easy mode

I wouldn't mind a "hard mode" that had that, but most people that try the DS games don't get very far. I forget the actual statistic, but something like 20% of players never even beat the first boss (Gundryr) about 5 minutes into Dark Souls 3. I'm all for a way for people to get to see how great the games are without having to "git gud" while not dumbing the game down. Something akin to Ninja Dog mode in Ninja Gaiden. For me, the more accessible the better. You're already limited by humanity/effigies/embers, so there's already that.

first Dark Souls Remastered footage from Nintendo Direct...

Ya know it's been so long since I've played ds1, I remember it looking like it does here in this video. To you more familiar, does this video showcase a noticeable improvement?

looks pretty much the same to me lol...although I've always played with DSFix and this remastered version now looks like that so I guess that's an improvement...did you ever finish the original game?...I remember you kept stopping and coming back multiple times

To be fair, this was the Switch version. To me, it looked like the Gaping Dragon had a lot more detail in the geometry. Some of the textures looked like they had more detail, while others looked like they had less. But again, it's the Switch version, which is probably running at 720p or less. I'll wait to see the PS4/XB1/PC version.

Good points. Switch version, and I too played with dsfix... Might have even had a texture pack too.

I never did beat the game, four horsemen demoralized me to the point of giving up there. Then later I returned and got to bed of chaos once I think. That demon who reapawns on the bridge.. what a dick! I usually died on him trying to get to the boss.

At this point I plan to just wait for the remaster and then start a new playthrough. Each time I've started over I'm so much better at the game I usually get much further.

I'm tempted to get both the Steam remaster and the Switch version. It'll be nice to have something I can play on my lunch breaks and it's a fun game to play in bursts.

I've completed the first game 4 times and I still despise Lost Izalith as much now as I ever have. From the stupid boss, to the insta-killing prowling-demon on the bridge, to those ridiculous dinosaur leg enemies. Hell, you have jump through a shitload of hoops not to kill Solaire there, too. It's just not a good level at all.

Some interesting tips... you know you can bypass the solaire problem by blowing poison/toxic mist through the center of the wall... and for the titanite demon, after you kill him once... don't pick up his drop and he will not respawn until you do :) The stupid boss... you can break a branch and exit, it will put you outside the fog wall, repeat. Makes the fight a little less annoying. The leg demons I killed once and ignored every game since. The give some decent xp but otherwise a waste of time, assuming you can run the path between them.

my OCD makes me kill all those baby dinosaurs in Lost Izalith every time...although like you said you only need to kill them once to collect the loot around there but the loot is honestly not worth the trouble so it's better to just run past them...what do you mean by breaking a branch will put you outside the fog wall?...are you referring to Bed of Chaos?...if you die you always go back the last bonfire right?...I always kill Solaire in Lost Izalith because I like getting his gear...you also get the Sunlight Maggot head gear there which makes Tomb of the Giants much easier due to not having to equip a lantern in 1 hand

You can get the Sunlight Maggot without killing Solaire.

As for Bed of Chaos, he means:
  1. break one branch,
  2. exit the game through the start menu,
  3. start the game again (you will be placed outside the fog gate),
  4. go through the fog gate,
  5. break the other branch
  6. repeat steps 2-4
  7. run straight through the hole and kill the boss.
