There Is a 40% Chance Apple Will Acquire Netflix, according to Citi

Yeah, no. Stock analysts think Apple is buying everything if it improves their portfolios. The sheer number of "Apple is gunna buy this stock I need pumped up" stories I see is ridiculous.
Yeah meanwhile if you post on some website about a particular company going to do something that causes some penny stock to skyrocket, then hey what you did is illegal.

This sums up the entire Seeking Alpha web site, yet no one is prosecuted.

I think it's much more likely they buy Tesla though.

Haha, no, that's not happening either, and is far far less likely than them buying Netflix, for the simple reason that Elon Musk isn't interested in selling. He will take Tesla to the edge of bankruptcy (again) before selling another one of his companies, and if he goes there, it'll be to one of his buddies, not to Apple.

I agree, there's nothing illegal about posting news. That can, and should, affect stock prices. It's only illegal if you do it intending to manipulate the market in some specific direction.

On another aside:

Didn't Disney already buy Hulu via their Fox deal? I can't see them also being interseted in Netflix.

I could see an Apple deal, not so much because of the web site or streaming rights (Apple already does all of that, arguably), but because Apple has reportedly been interested in becoming a content creator, and that is pretty much what Netflix has been focusing on in recent years.

As far as cars go, I can't see Apple buying into Tesla, there isn't enough synergy there. I could see them partnering with someone like BMW though.

Yes, Disney and Fox. both, had stakes in Hulu, then Disney acquired Fox and the combined shares made Disney the majority stock holder. Comcast is the other partner and they seem to be upset about losing control over Hulu. Who knows, maybe Comcast will step up and buy Disney out of Hulu, then it will be another Comcast company. BOO!

Man, no one in this thread has business sense.

Buying Netflix makes a lot of sense for Apple, They already have a large captured user base, name recognition, infrastructure and content production pipeline. It's a plug and play VOD service without having to take the lumps of starting up your own studio, pipeline, and delivery platform. Netflix can turn a profit whenever they want by cutting production budgets, but right now they want to just shotgun content out there and see what sticks to 1) entice users to become used to only using NETFLIX and 2) creating a strong core of shows that will retain subscribers.

I think it's much more likely they buy Tesla though.

Also, wasn't this the same Forum that was bemoaning Netflix's $1 price increase as 'being bent over!'

You have no business sense. To quote Netflix "We're becoming HBO before HBO can become us" The problem with a streaming service is you have to negotiate contracts with the content providers. During the early years, it was an experiment for everybody and therefore relatively cheap. The big media houses had no idea it would take off the way it did. And when that did happen, they started bending Netflix over the table on licensing fees. They wanted a percentage royalty for every user, even if that user didn't watch one of their programs. Netflix's answer to this was secure only the biggest movies and make their own programming like HBO to bring people in. If you remove original content, Netflix's content has become rather paltry. It wasn't like it was in the hey day about 8 years back where just about every movie theater release could be found on Netflix.

Apple would be foolish to buy a company that is constantly loosing money.
They've made money every quarter for at least the last 4 quarters and they're expected to continue making money every quarter next year

Not sure about you, but I only care about original content. I mean sure I may go watch Thankyou for Smoking one of these days, but 99.9% of the time, if I watch netflix, I'm watching a series.

a 50% chance can go either way.

a 40% chance is a definite no. They're just talking outta their asses.

avoiding paying taxes is legal (loophole legal) by funneling it overseas
That's not what happens. The bitching you're hearing is about profits made on overseas sales of devices manufactured overseas. It has nothing to do with money/sales/manufacturing stateside. It's just money Uncle Sam feels entitled to because Apple happens to have its HQ in the states.

Well, if Netflix gets bought and nothing changes for me as a consumer, then, fine. But if it happens and suddenly I need iTunes or something horrible as that (like needing their set top box), then I am unsubscribing in an instant.

Oh God how I hate iTunes.

I don't necessarily want this to happen but it's a possibility. This unfortunately is right up there with the speculation stories I've read regarding them trying to buy Disney.

Netflix, don't do it!!! Also if Apple has that much money, why not give back to the consumers, we buy phones from you, we deserve better, cheaper price tag on your phones please. Companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsumg, etc. is such a monopoly. The universal product never works well unless you buy real genuine product from the same company. As much as I love using their services and products, I am tired of their monopoly game and price tag.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Disney was forced to sell off some (or all) of its control of Hulu as part of the agreement that allows them to go through with the Fox purchase.

I do not see Disney being forced to sell, as they 1) do not own any other streaming services, and 2) Hulu remains part of Comcast. It is not like either of them have a monopoly in this area.

I think it more likely Disney may buy out Comcast and make Hulu their streaming service arm. Disney has not been shy about placing ABC content on Hulu, including the Marvel properties as well.

If I had a choice, I would hope Disney buys Hulu, rather than Comcast. Right now, Disney holds the cards, as the majority stock holder.

Doesn't mean anything unless it actually happens. If Netflix is smart, it won't allow this. It's already a huge cash-cow as it is.

A few months ago i would have agreed.

With Disney buying Fox and launching their own streaming service next year, imho netflix is now on life support.

Disney is now the largest studio in history, and owns an insane amount of IP, with a massive back catalogue. Fuck.

Apple is a monopoly? I mean if this was 10 - 12 years ago when Apple had a virtual monopoly on digital sales, I'd have been right on your side, but at this point, Apple isn't even the biggest handset maker and clearly Samsung and Apple can't both be a monopoly in the same space.

Why are these predictions all of a sudden being made? Why is citi trying to prop up either netflix's or apples stock value by making this prediction? There are zero indicators that apple is remotely interested.

They definitely became HBO. 99.9% of their content sucks just like HBO.
