Moviegoing Is Expected to Hit a 22-Year Low

moviepass will increase those numbers.

Also, even at a 22 year low, many movies still turn a profit, so this is moot.

The movie industry is the only shit that keeps rising in price. Isn't shit supposed to get cheaper over time?

Isn't shit supposed to get cheaper over time?

Well, they would have to streamline production even more and make it even cheaper to produce movies.
Instead of just one remake of the same movie a year, they would have to up it to about 100 remakes/year.
It would be even cheaper if they hired cheaper actors and reused the original scripts of the movie being remade.

Or, actually, even cheaper still.
Just rip off other movies/comics and remake them with extremely low budgets.

Black Bat: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2205589/
Metal Man: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1233217/
Avenging Force: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1619016/

Surprisingly enough, this production company still ends up making profits off of these movies, which is why they keep pumping out these extremely awful movies.

-Too many mediocre or bad movies
-Too many sequels, reboots, remakes, etc. Very little originality.
-Insanely high ticket and concession prices
-Technology has advanced to where you can also have an excellent movie watching experience at home. A couple of decades ago, the theater was vastly superior to the experience on standard def TVs and movies on VHS. The difference between a 4K TV with a good sound system and the theater is marginal, maybe not even very noticeable to many/most people.

It's been what, like a month since the last thread of this whine fest?

I need a repost filter for Front Page News so I can start skipping over the same old crap that gets posted time and time again...

In 2009, I reluctantly went to see Avatar. Haven't been back since. Too much money and too inconvenient.

I haven't been to the theater in years. Too many people using cell phones, people getting up in front of you constantly, ridiculous prices for food/drinks, sticky cupholders/floors/seats, too cold or too hot in the theater, annoying people talking/laughing/crying/screaming/etc.. not to mention garbage movies and reboots. The good thing that will come out of movie theater attendance dropping is that they'll be forced to push the content to online streaming services. But.. I'm sure the quality will suck.

I still enjoy watching a movie in a theater, that much will never change, but no I don't go to nearly as many as I did in my youth. I did catch Star Wars - The Last Jedi a few weeks ago in a theater pretty much 98% full however, the day after release, so that was fun for the wife and I. Movie price itself wasn't so bad I suppose, just under $9, but I swear - and this was the first trip to the theater in this new area we moved to - the prices on the food and soda items was insane, absolutely the highest I've ever seen in my entire life of 5+ decades now. Box of "theater" candy like Milk Duds? $5. A traditional hot dog? $5.50. A large bucket of popcorn - which is made from like $.14 (that's 14 CENTS) worth of actual corn kernels? $8.50. A large soda, roughly 44 oz? $6.50. Good lord have mercy. :(

Told the wife the next time we head there to that theater - we'll make future trips on Tuesday for their discounted prices on all the shows all day - we're going to stop at a Walgreens and grab the same exact theater candy for $.99 a box, grab some 20 oz sodas for $1.79 per, and stash it in her large purse before we get there or something.

I completely understand that theaters are in business to make some money and survive, and I know the movie studios are gouging the theater owners with crazy percentages on viewings, but gouging the very people you're depending on with such extraordinarily bloated pricing isn't helping the situation either.

Gotta pay those workers a living wage somehow....

The last time I went to the theater was a midnight showing for The League of Extraordinary Gentleman.
I went thinking no one but the wife and I would be watching that movie at that time, no crunching and crackling of popcorn and candy wrappers, no little bastards running around and no teenagers with the flashing strobes on their antennae.

But lo and behold, there was another couple in the theater with us, fucking teenyboppers with those goddamn flashing cells.
I just knew it was going to be a shitshow before the movie even started. And sure enough, all through the film, they were snapping pics, giggling and taking calls with it on speaker. I approached them during the film and kindly told them to STFU or there would be dire consequences, and of course that did about a fuckload of nothing.
So at about an hour into the film, I promptly lost my shit and spiraled my XL Mr.Pibb right into the back of the prick boyfriend's head. The wife hustled me out of there before I wound up going to jail.

Needless to say, I haven't been back since and I enjoy my Home Theater just fine thank you.

Hollywood can only produce the same movie so many times before fans no longer want to drop $15 at the movie theater to see it again.

I have a movie pass so I will be seeing more movies than ever before

When the comic books are better than the movies they inspire, the movie business has a huge problem. Used to be real books were better than the movies they inspired. Now we're down to comic books being better. Doesn't say much for the motion picture industry.

That's just cause you're old now.

I am old, but was totally bored by TLJ. Most Disney stuff these days appears to be written by the marketing department, no real story or character development required.

I don't know what theaters you're going to but the one we go to (AMC) has reserved seating, plush full recliner seats, and very good audio. Now if only the content was better we would go more often.
Not much you can do about the movies themselves, but as far as cinemas...

Although 2017 movie ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada are expected to dip just below last year's record of $11.38 billion, the number of tickets sold is projected to drop 4% to 1.26 billion — the lowest level since 1995, according to preliminary estimates from studio executives.

There is what I was looking for, was this based on percentages or actual ticket numbers. Actual ticket numbers give better insight.

Using this table (actual numbers don't matter, only the relative change between them)

1995: 1.26 Billion / 295 Million (266 million (US) + 29 million (Can)) = 4.74 Tickets Per Person
2017: 1.26 Billion / 362 Million (325 million (US) + 37 million (Can)) = 3.48 Tickets Per Person

That's a 26% drop in ticket sales per person. Money is the same, but only because the number of people is increasing. So it's not "stagnating".....it's sinking! Individual user interest is diminishing, and that's bad for any industry.

Moana was pretty good, Wreck It Ralph was great. That final scene in Moana with the Volcano was superb from an animation perspective. In my opinion, Disney needs to get back into hand drawn. Leave the CGI stuff to Pixar (and Dreamworks). With Studio Ghibli out of the picture (possibly), they could fill that void for high quality hand drawn stuff. I believe there is still a huge market for hand drawn (just look how well Your Name has done).

Progressives ruin everything they touch. When progressives run the movie studio's and try to use movies to promote their SJW agenda why should anyone be surprised that 50% of the population doesn't want anything to do with their crap? I went to see the last Star War's movie this past holiday; regrettably I may never go see another...

I went to the movies exactly once this year, to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

-I got a marine ticket for $8, which is almost half the normal price... Not bad
-I need something to drink during a 2 ¹/² hour movie. A glass if pop was $6.77... Just wow. Can't bring your own drink, so...
- The theatre had reclining seats with lots of room, this is a large improvement over the old cramped seating
-The sound was somewhat distracting with a couple of the surround speakers apparently damaged/vibrating during certain scenes.
-Overall sound quality even without this issue was not as good as my home theatre.
-The directional sound / sound stage is admittedly better than my home theatre, but this makes sense due to the size limitations of my room and that I only have 5.1 speakers
-Screen quality was a bit better than my home theatre, but I prefer a bit brighter image because can't see the dark detail well due to my vision. Customizing to my needs is nice...
-I miss being able to pause the movie to go to the bathroom, stretch, whatever...2 1/2 hours without a bathroom break is rough
-Hearing all of the crunching, crinkling, and talking is distracting.

Overall, I continue to appreciate my home theatre. Every once in a while when I go to the cinema, I get reminded how worthwhile this investment was... Still, for the price to go see a movie, I just don't get why they can't invest some $$$ in their damn sound system....
Same here - the only movie I saw this year at the cinema was Last Jedi. There were a few others I kind of wanted to see, but never got around to it and thought I'd enjoy them more at home.

Look at the top grossing movies this year: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=worldwide&yr=2017

Not much originality, and I doubt that's going to change any time soon.
All that shows me is that consumers are too lazy to take a chance with IP they aren't familiar with already. There are some amazing movies on that list and guess why they aren't near the top? Yeah lets just keep blaming the movie executives to make ourselves feel better about the fact that our fellow man has no damn taste.

Great find man, I need to return the favor and show you this gem.

Fantastic insight. Was not what I was expecting based on the title, but instead was spot on about character development.

What can I say.....there's a reason Cameron only makes hits.

Saw about a dozen movies this year, maybe half of them were actually worth the price of admission, the rest were mediocre at best. The only real standouts were Thor and IT.

What surprised me about Beauty And The Beast was that they took a movie that was immensely popular (original 1991 animation) which had a personality neutral lead character (since animated characters aren't real) and replaced her with an incredibly polarizing actress. When you bring in an actor/actress that has polarizing personal opinions, it taints the personality of the character they are playing. Animated Belle was able to be a strong female lead without any baggage. When Emma Watson plays a strong female lead all I hear is "rape culture, men suck, I'm amazing, rape culture".

I used to go to the theater a lot, one of my first memories is of seeing Dick Tracy in the theater when I was about 4, but I havent had the urge to go in a while. The last movie I saw was Tropic Thunder... Its too expensive for something I can get free in a month or 2.

With the advent of decent hometheater, going to the movies just doesn't hold the shine it once did.

At least I can pause a movie at home to take a leak. At the movies, especially in the cinemas where drinking alcohol is permitted, I've got to run 50m to the toilet missing out on some crucial part of the plot the whole time!

I swear I have the bladder of an infant.

^^^^ This.

I see a movie once a week with a friend - recently the good films we've seen have been Jumanji, IT, Bladerunner 2049. Movies that weren't awful but could have been better were The Last Jedi, Thor Ragnarok, and Wonder Woman. Films that were just beyond any sort of help were Coco, Justice League, and Down Sizing.

If it weren't for Movie Pass, I probably wouldn't have gone to see any of them except IT, and the Last Jedi.

Its all about the dollar. Im not paying 50-75 dollars to take my family of 5 to a movie. I think people are tired of getting gouged to a movie. People are finally realizing that “GASP”....i can wait a few months to watch a movie at MY home far cheaper, in my pajamas, eating and drinking wtf i want to. Movie theaters are in big trouble.

^^ that. I do not mind waiting a couple months to borrow the movie free for nine days from my local library - actually ten because they are closed on sunday.

Also ... would say there are many like me who are sick and tired of weak ass story lines that exist solely to string two hours of CGI filled action scenes together.

Damn you make me feel old. The first movie I remember seeing was The Deer Hunter with my parents when I was 4, and that was at a drive-in.

I go from time to time. I saw The Greatest Showman last week. A really good movie, for a musical. It was different from the usual garbage that is on.

Don't ruin movies like blade runner then a holes! Worst director award for that film, ruined my baby :'(

with the Disney buyout, expect EVEN less variety in theaters in years to come.
Sigh.
Last super awesome film fit for cinemas was probably Mad Max. War for the Planet of the Apes was pretty good too.

2018 = only Mission Impossible

superhero films = hell no. Exception = Deadpool if not Disney neutered
romcoms = hell no
slow burn spy thrillers = hell no
space operas (Trek, Star Wars, Velerian) = hell no
pop scifi (Transformers, prob PlayerOne, Battle Angel and prob any scifi James Cameron touches on now) = hell no
documentaries = hell no
cop thrillers = hell no
animation = hell no . Standards are dropping like a cliff for this genre. Exception = Incredibles 2
disaster porn = well maybe but graphics are still crap. Too much stiff drama still.
comedy = hell no
slow burn scifi (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Mother) = hell no.
horror = hell no

cinema is slowly becoming a rarity like going to the theme park. Like having a movie of Inception's caliber be released.

Direct Streaming exclusives are getting VERY enjoyable though. ( What Happened to Monday, Bright etc)
HK films are getting back to being watchable (Exodus, Shock Wave) too.

egh... a remake every 20 years is good business. That way you, your kids, your grandkids and greatgrandkids can watch a version.

hollywood only needs enough ideas to last 2 decades

Oooohh 1995! So none of the points mentioned are even nearly relivant.
Fake News. Get a grip [H] and quit parroting the bull-shit you grasp at.
So disaspointed. Really?

Lol wow. Now that’s a triggered snowflake

The series should have ended with Return of the Jedi. The prequels were mediocre while the more recent films were nothing more than a huge money grab.
