The UK wants to hit Google, Facebook, and other tech companies with tax fines if they fail to take action against extremism. Officials claim that they are “ruthless profiteers” who let terrorists run amok on their platforms while law enforcement and security services are spending millions in an effort to keep the country safe.

Ben Wallace accused tech firms of being happy to sell people’s data but not to give it to the government which was being forced to spend vast sums on de-radicalization programs, surveillance and other counter-terrorism measures. “If they continue to be less than co-operative, we should look at things like tax as a way of incentivizing them or compensating for their inaction,” Wallace told the Sunday Times newspaper in an interview.

Atlas Shrugged is becoming more and more of a reality every day. "Ruthless profiteers" lol. All the while the governments enable the radicals with their ineptitude and diffidence.

"The UK wants" ...

This is one MP... (Ben Wallace), he is not part of the government (ie the executive branch)

I dont think this has legs.
UK dont tax these major corps hardly anything.
Are they going to threaten them with having to pay their proper tax?
They havent a clue how to collect it anyway.
This looks like a none event.

* non-event

/pedantry :)

Why doesn't the UK combat terrorism? Nation security is not the job of international private companies, it is the job of the government.

How to get a new Supercar without paying..

Step 1) Come up with some bill that targets Foreign Tech companies.

Step 2) Use Scary words like "Terrorism" to drum up support from the unthinking majority

Step 3) Put just enough push behind bogus bill to prevent foreign tech companies from completely dismissing it.

Step 4) Profit - Enjoy your new super car Mr Politician while the bill you proposed dies on the floor after you ceased pushing it because you got paid.

The words none event have the exact same meaning.
A shortened version in the dictionary doesnt change this.

/pedantry :p

Sorry, incorrect... our usage of 'non-event' is a modified form of the French 'non-événement'... not a shortened version of 'none event', which makes no sense grammatically in English...

/superduperpedantry ;)

noun
noun: non-event; plural noun: non-events; noun: nonevent; plural noun: nonevents

an unexpectedly dull or insignificant event or occasion.
"despite the pre-match publicity, the contest turned out to be a non-event"
an event that did not happen.
"they sent out false announcements of art events to the media, getting reporters to show up for non-events"

The origin is irrelevant, the meaning isnt.

It had in any case come to a natural conclusion I feel.
