Worst games of 2017

he's an annoying dude, and messed up with ME, he means andromeda, not 3, anyways, I found it a terrible year for gaming, seen a bunch of best games of 2017 lists and only a couple in there I would play, or have played.

Was not a great year for gaming. Couple of gems but a pretty slow year all things considered. ME: Andromeda wasn't great but it wasn't one of the worst games by a long shot.

Probably the most disappointing game (in retrospect) was Wolfenstein. Not a bad game, but it didn't really bring anything new to the table.

I was unemployed from May to July so I did get to catch up on a few games from years past that were fantastic.

2017 was a down year for the big AAA developers but smaller games like What Remains of Edith Finch and Senua's Sacrifice were the real winners...Death of the Outsider might have also gone under the radar

My biggest dissapointement would be destiny 2 as I simply can not play it for longer then 30 min without a crash, usually crashes even within 5 min.

Most of what I played this year was actually released a year or two ago. It has been the year of the backlog I suppose. I still don't think Andromeda was a bad game, though.

Pretty amazing year if you ask me. Here are the games I played this year that I really liked.

  • Resident Evil 7
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Ghost Recon Wildlands
  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Sniper Ghost Warrior 3
  • Wolfenstein 2
  • Outlast 2

Honorable Mentions:

  • Persona 5
  • Prey
  • Cuphead
  • Little Nightmares

Didn't really play many games that came out this year. My short list of good 2017 games are:

Cuphead
Nier: Automata
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

I do wish I played RE7 but I'm holding out on a Rift version once that PSVR exclusivity expires.

Mass Effect Andromeda

Expectations and hopes were impossibly high given the legacy of the original trilogy. Still, the game was such a disappointment to so many. Perhaps, the worst part was Bioware's total disregard for the fans of Mass Effect. They basically killed the franchise with MEA and scolded us for not thanking them for it.

XCom 2 - WotC was one of the best expansions of a game that I've ever played. Wildlands was a good distraction for a while too.

2017 was a great year for games. A lot of my top games are indies this year, but I don't see why that's a bad thing either. There were some good AAA games too, many of which were mentioned above. Just because a game didn't sell three billion copies doesn't mean it's bad either. For example I think Prey is an incredibly good game, but it seems it didn't sell all that well. Wolfenstein 2 did very well. Dead Cells, Songbringer, and Sundered are some of the best games I've played in some time. Did the Specter of Torment addon for Shovel Knight come out this year? Another spot-on-game. The Switch came out this year, Breath of the Wild came out this year. Just a few too. There are TONS more good games from 2017 from several genres and publishing methods. How about Original Sin 2? Hellblade's a good one, Nier: Automata how about some of the PS4 games like Horizon Zero Dawn?

Well here goes:

Game of the year: Horizon Zero Dawn - although I'm yet to finish it, so review is still down the line somewhere

Runner up: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands 8/10 - I thought this will be a clear winner without contention, then I got a PS4.

Most underrated game of the year: Mass Effect Andromeda 7/10 - It's a solid game, I had tons of fun with it.

Disappointment of the year: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice 6/10

And the prestigious award for worst game of the year goes to: Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 3/10

I lasted about 90 seconds before I closed that video. Who the fuck watches this? Why would you post it?
Francis is just a character the guy plays. He's funny at times, although I find him too much most of the time.

Ha! Lucky me, I didn't watch it. Saw the screenshot, and thought "nah". I'm sure there were some bad games this year. The thing is though, every game I personally bought in 2017 was very enjoyable. There are a few I still need to finish, but most of the ones I got, I played through. (which is saying something, because that doesn't always happen)

I really couldn't disagree more with this comment. As a enormous fan of Mass Effect, I absolutely loved Andromeda. I think the problem with today's audience is the level of expectations that people have for something instead of enjoying it for what it is. There is still a bunch of Mass Effect lore, great exploration, good stories, and it felt very much like a Mass Effect game. I mean, people should have just accepted the fact that the Shepherd trilogy is over and done with. They tried something new with Andromeda and I personally loved the idea... I truly felt like what I would feel if I was a person going out into the galaxy and looking for a new home. You have people already there not happy to see you, you have moral problems with being a outsider, and you have to be able to be a positive representative for the human race. Andromeda and the premise of it, as well as what you were doing, is what I would imagine happening if I myself were trying to find a new home for humanity.

Anyway, I could go on and on about the game but it really baffles me how fans of ME could be so upset about Andromeda. It's not a terrible game by ANY stretch of the imagination, and what really murders me is that I fear EA will never give the franchise another shot because of the overblown negativity the game got. I mean people were seriously posting on Reddit about how shit the game was b/c the facial animations and the running animations were wonky. Really? That's your gripe? Did you listen to WHAT they were saying? Did you listen to the context of what was happening? I personally was too focused on what was being said to care about how the lips were moving on the character. In either case I think it's criminally under-rated, and I think as time goes on it will be remembered more fondly and perhaps it will get some new fans along the way.

I'd also like to add a "Most under-rated" title here like M76 did. Mine would be: Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3.

I bought it, but haven't played it yet. From the discussions I had in the ME:A thread though, it sounds like I'm really going to enjoy it. I like ME:1 the best out of the original series (followed closely by ME:2 then 3) so the exploration and what some might think is mundane actually is the driving force for me. Sure, I laughed along with everyone else at some of the character designs, animation etc. Happy to admit that, (because they are kinda funny) but the core game sounds like I will have a blast with it. I just haven't made the time to dig into it yet. It's sitting at the ready. Still, it's a shame that they couldn't quite get the full package, and have better visuals for the character, but oh well. Can't win everything. (IMO they strayed a bit too far on the Asari as one example)

I think the problem with peoples' expectations is that they'll play a new game (one that likely starts a new series whether intended or not). They get blown away. I know I was when I played the first ME. Then the studio follows it up, and they have a lot to live up to because the first one was a NEW experience for most. You can't usually match that same level of wonder. Some manage to pull it off. While I enjoyed ME better than 2, they still managed to pull it off. (I just missed the planet landings personally.) They ALMOST pulled it off for 3, but pissed people off with the ending. Whatever, can't win them all like I said before, but it wasn't an issue of quality. They maintained the status quo minus the ending. (then of course tried to fix it)

ME:A comes along, goes back to the roots in some ways, tries to push out in others, but also drops the ball in others. That means you're pleasing exactly two separate thirds of your original audience, dropping the last third (these are rough estimates) due to the graphical issues, and then it all balloons out of control because this is the internet after all. So it gets a bad rep, but really two thirds of fans think it's still pretty good, but nobody is talking about it anymore.

At least that's kind of my theory.

Huge year for Nintendo and Sony. Seems like this spring/summer, you couldn't keep up with everything that was good coming out on PS4, and then the Switch moved beyond Zelda and kept picking up momentum with decent titles. It was like every month from February through about August you hiad a new contender GOTY come out, and it was almost always on one of these two platforms.

Pretty blah year for the typical AAA studios I thought - EA, Activision & Ubisoft. Some decent stuff out of here, but nothing that was must have I didn't think. And (finally) a lot of backlash against the prevalent microtransactions and lootboxes.

PC gaming in general had the PUBG breakout. ~Better~ console ports with Destiny 2, although that issue still isn't completely gone (World of Final Fantasy, Nioh). DX12 appears to be struggling, still. Intel finally moved past 4 cores, but only because AMD made them. And ... we did finally see Vega and Volta, sort of.

If there were a loser for 2017, it would have been Microsoft. They canned most of their own game studios, and their "most powerful" console is technically awesome, but a year late and isn't going to have any showcase exclusives for good while because of the lack of studios.

Microsoft isn't exactly a game though, so keeping with the OP, I'd say.... Fortnite. It started off as a co-op third person shooter/tower defense hybrid that I was pretty excited about. Then they released Battle Royale, which is esentially the same thing as PUBG - a completely different style of game that I'm not so excited about. So now the builder/co-op part of the game is all but dead. Really felt like a bait and switch from Epic. I can't really fault them for it, the game is doing very well as Battle Royale, but that wasn't what I signed up for when I supported a co-op third person tower defense game.

Personally, I think Mass Effect is such a wonderful and fleshed-out universe that it excels in what it tries to say in gameplay and story that Star Wars and other science fiction fails. There is so much more in that universe left to explore, and luckily I played Andromeda with no expectations. I bought it at launch and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It took everything that made 1 great with exploration and lore, and opened it up into multiple planets that you WANT to explore. Even if some of the stuff is mundane like collect 20 of this. Do yourself a favor and try to go into it with a open mind. Don't go into it thinking of the first trilogy, or thinking it will be better or worse because of this or that, or because of what others have said. Make up your own mind. Just try to enjoy it. Read everything. Talk to everyone. Explore everywhere. Give it a chance. If you don't end up liking it then that's okay too, but being a huge Mass Effect fan myself I found it hard not to thoroughly enjoy.

That's typically how I approach most games. I'm kind of an optimist when it comes to games, and am fairly forgiving where others aren't. Even if I find things that I like to crack jokes about, odds are I probably enjoyed it anyway. My scale typically leans toward the positive aspects unless something is just SO bad that there is no redeeming quality. That's a REALLY rare occasion. I tend to poke a lot of fun at cookie cutter Ubi-Acti-EA games, but even a lot of those are decent taken on their own. It's just that when you have a yearly update, IMO things grow stale, and that's the part that I make fun of, even if there's an underlying decent game. In the case of ME:A though, I'll definitely go in with the idea that it's a distant relative of ME, and enjoy it for it's own qualities. Same as I would with say an Ultima off-shoot, or say a BioShock when my favorite game of all time is System Shock. I'm pretty good at compartmentalizing things like that.

I'm still convinced 2/3 of the Andromeda hate is coming from people who either didn't play it or didn't like it because the internet said so. It's not a great game, but neither were the first 3. If you took Dragon Age Inquisition and tossed it into space, you have a pretty good idea of what the game is like. The plot is simplistic, but it's no worse than 95% of the other games out there.

if you take out the Mass Effect name Andromeda is probably a good game on its own...when you add in all the fan expectations and ME mythology Andromeda grades lower when compared to the bar the first 3 games set

I agree, except for the part about ME1-3 not being great games.

I consider #2 to be close to great. I still feel like I just shot up a warehouse on a dozen planets rather than actually exploring anything. #1 had a great story, but the gunplay and Mako sucked ass. #3 was on its way to being great if they hadn't had all of that war asset and MP nonsense. Each game had some major caveats keeping them from bring truly great, but most games tend to.

Yes, those are true observations, (I Liked the mako anyway) and they removed the mp requirement for war assets from 3 in a patch, and the MP was quite fun regardless, and trust me that's big praise coming from me.

But despite those flaws they're great games, and I'd be hard pressed to mention any other game from the era that had the same effect on me.

I think the word you're looking for is perfect games. No, they're not perfect, and I don't think there ever will be a perfect game.

You shut up about the Mako!!! :D

Loved driving that thing around in all its plasti-physics-based weirdness. I had a lot of fun driving it in unintended ways though, which was part of the fun.

I can't disagree with that...I've replayed all of them at least once. In spite of mostly hating the gameplay from #1, I've completed it beginning to end 3 times. #2 as well. They captured the feeling of a real world in those games. Very few other games do that.

True, each ME game had a weak point. But part of the reason why I consider ME1 to be the best is because it really raised the bar in terms of spoken diolgue. I haven't played any RPGs older than that era, but can you think of a game that had better written & spoken diolgue prior ME1? I know the Witcher 2 is essentially on par, and The Witcher 3 carried that and expanded it to a massive open world. But prior to that, ME1 certainly advanced the industry forward in that one aspect if anything.

I think DeusEx the original comes close, of course it's 10 years older, so the technical capabilities of the time doesn't do it justice in terms of graphics and animation. I'll never forget how you could go on for minutes in it debating an AI about the nanny state. It also has the best and most believable story of any game I played. As in it's only so slightly different than actual reality, they used all the most popular conspiracy theories and implemented them as facts in the game world. I think that game set the bar for nuance back in 2000, and it's still yet to be beaten in that regard. Many conversations in it ring so true that it could be 100% real. It's a game where every little tidbit of information or secret you can find will be interesting.

Unless you are only focusing on PC, The Nintendo switch put out some absolute gems this year. Zelda, Mario, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and even an exceptionally well done overhaul of Mario Kart were of the highest production value you will find in gaming. Every single part of every single game just works as intended from day 1. They are literally putting the PC industry to shame with the half made games that get released regularly. Especially when some of these games are coming from the largest studios on earth.

I honestly don't give any legitimacy to a game that needs a day 1 patch and fails to deliver a polished product on launch. Feel free to piss away your money on half efforts from developers if you want to continue seeing trash being released as the shiny glory of that publisher. There's a reason that this has become the norm, and why pc gaming is such a mixed bag.

There are dozens of games on console and even pc that delivered exceptionally voiced acting prior to ME1. Don't make the mistake of letting your emotion overtake your judgement. I apologize if you are a younger gamer and hadn't experienced earlier titles but it's just the truth.

It also predicted the Roomba...

This was a game way ahead of its time, the soundtrack still holds up today, nearly 20 years later...

YEah, it's one of the best original soundtracks ever. But my favorite is the hong kong soundtrack. And the main theme. DX:HR's soundtrack wasn't bad either but it felt much more ambient and generic.

I must be the only one who couldn't get into Horizon: Zero Dawn. Hell I even bought the expansion hoping that it would improve the game.

It is a MASSIVE disappointment for me. More so because I bought PS4 Pro only because of that game. And I have not owned a console for 20 years (last was old Sega, can't remember the name now).
Then Mass Effect: Andromeda came out, and some will call out blasphemy here, but I thought it was a much better game than Horizon :D

Destiny 2 was a minor Disappointment (I didn't set my standards high). I expected Borderlands feel but the loot that dropped didn't have enough variation. Borderlands has better PvE and Overwatch has better PvP. Destiny 2 felt like a mediocre mashup of the two.

When it comes to good games, Elex was a pleasant surprise. It reminded me of old Gothic series that I loved to play (I know the game is made by the same developers).
Battle Chasers was another game I enjoyed a lot this year.
Also Divinity Original Sin 2 was great, but I didn't get surprised there :)

I just grabbed Tekken 7 Deluxe on sale on Steam (technically 2017 release for PC anyway) and have been having a great time with it so far. It's a nice contrast to Street Fighter V and DOA which are the others I play fairly regularly. So there's another decent release to chalk up for 2017 that I didn't think of in my first post.
