NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has joined with the Freedom of the Press Foundation to create an open-source Android app called Haven, which turns your phone into a pocket-sized security system. All you need is a spare phone and a healthy dose of paranoia.

Haven turns any Android phone into a motion, sound, vibration and light detector, watching for unexpected guests and unwanted intruders. By combining the array of sensors found in any smartphone, with the world’s most secure communications technologies, like Signal and Tor, Haven prevents the worst kind of people from silencing citizens without getting caught in the act.

What the fuck are people trying to hide from? What do they have that needs to be top secret? Do I care if the government knows what is on my phone or PC? Nope.

So if there is someone in the world who has no issue with having a pinapple shoved up their ass by the government you would be fine with it because they are ? You want to bend over you go ahead but don't expect that the rest of us should have to follow you.

I've set my Windows 10 installation to give as much data to Microsoft as possible. I want to contribute with my data and I wish I could volunteer or even sell my activity. If some social scientists wanted to study my habits I'd be happy to install a webcam for them in my home.

That sorry sack of crap brought a lot of shit to light the American people were blind too and never wanted to admit it due to being complacent or just too lazy to change the channel from Jerry Springer and see what is going on in the world.

Watch 'Underground', an awesome movie based around Julian Assange and his early days that highlights the very interesting scene that was hacking in the 80s.

A really good movie.

Watched the video, re-read the article. Still no idea wtf this app does.

It logs metrics from all input sensors on the host device and streams event data over secure channels to another phone or computer configured as the server.

Think baby monitor made by hackers on steroids.

I actually think it's a very interesting concept...

I like it too. Very cheap home surveillance implemented with actual secure protocols, unlike most the trash on the market. I hope this trickles over.

Well described, I read the page and couldn't figure out why the person you replied to couldn't figure it out, it was black&white. To think I've been deciding how to secure my travel trailer with IP cams, car alarm or what, now I have another option to look in to.

From the website:
Haven only saves images and sound when triggered by motion or volume, and stores everything locally on the device. You can position the device’s camera to capture visible motion, or set your phone somewhere discreet to just listen for noises. Get secure notifications of intrusion events instantly and access the logs remotely or anytime later.

The follow sensors are monitored for a measurable change, and then recorded to an event log on the device:

Accelerometer: phone’s motion and vibration
Camera: motion in the phone’s visible surroundings from front or back camera
Microphone: noises in the enviroment
Light: change in light from ambient light sensor
Power: detect device being unplugged or power loss

So it's a security cam app?

This is a security cam app in part, but goes further. It uses all phone sensors so it doesn't just use the camera, it also listens, and detects when the phone itself moves. So for instance, you could put this into a car if you had a battery solution for that. Or on the back of an entry door. Or, of course, just use it like a security camera that keeps all data local and only communicates securely via Signal (the encrypted SMS app.)

I REALLY like this a lot. I have a few old phones around and will test this out. I don't want to install expensive security cameras, but a pretty much for-free thing like this to monitor the house when I'm away, not shabby at all. And like I already said, no "cloud camera" or "cloud recording" or any of that.

I think this is excellent.

excellent until you realize the app has a backdoor that can also monitor.

Just because YOU don't give a shit about your privacy doesn't mean others don't.

As to "What are people trying to hide from."

The answer, as always, is "None of your fucking business." Same as it is for the government.

Point totally goes over your head.....Can't wait until an insurance companies denies you coverage because it turns out you like to eat bacon or drink soda or something else that would be not ideal for your health...
