I was thinking of putting my unused Pi Zero W to use as a security camera. I found the following guide, and other than skipping the housing section (I'll find a different case), it's what I'll likely use, including the NOIR camera.

I'm mainly wanting to keep an eye on my front door to see who knocks on our door, including anyone who may walk off with a package.

Has anyone attempted something similar? If so, were you happy with the results?

Yep ran the RPi linux with motion detect camera. Have it email the pics to my iPhone. Worked great, the toughest part was the Secure Email to the yahoo from the RPi.

I was thinking of using the Windows Share steps to dump the video on a local server or my NAS.

Shares can be vulnerable. Once you create a share on a windows box, it is easily 1000x more crackable. Metasploit confirmed that for me. In any case, you can use samba off the SD Card in Linux.

Yep, sd is cheap. Throw it all on there and share. When done, image it with Win32DiskImager. Then if something happens, you can just reimage from the backup.

I had a couple of these running around my house. They worked OK. I even managed to get them to work with the surveillance software on my Synology NAS. But I had a hard time justifying running an entire Linux OS stack just to run a tiny camera. Still haven't decided on what I'm going to do next with them.

At least you know a bunch of Chinese dudes aren't watching your camera like the ones on amazon.
