YouTube has finally made up their mind and they're going to compete with other music services like Spotify and Apple. They've tried a few times before, but this time they're adding a few wrinkles they haven't offered in the past. However, with the competition fully entrenched I'm not sure if they can make a splash. Regardless, I'll give it a free trial when it starts.

YouTube must overcome several hurdles to meet a March target. Not only has YouTube been trying to negotiate new deals with Universal and Sony for more than a year, but it also has a talks with Vevo looming early next year. Vevo, owned by Universal and Sony, distributes music videos for their acts.

I'm not sure I fully understand this one. They already have Google Play Music which competes with those services, which the article mentions. Why create a yet another one? Shouldn't they promote the Google Music instead? It still exists, so why not use that. Or re-brand it to roll it all into one? The only thing that might be different is that it mentioned video clips. Which again, they already have with Google Play Movies & TV. So yeah...I'm just confused.

Makes sense to have a music service. See so many people use YouTube to stream music as is.

If Google aren't a bunch of idiots this will just be a new front end for Google Play Music.

But past performance suggests that they might not know what they're doing and have built an entire separate offering for no reason.

This feels reminiscent of the naming convention confusion that stemmed from Microsoft's Zune and Groove.

"The new service, internally referred to as Remix"

It's not even called YouTube Music.

yeah, like others here, i am confused. Lots of people already use youtube to get music, for free. how are you going to alter that to get people to pay?

Glad I'm not the only person going "Huh?" I use Youtube music exclusively. I am so behind, I don't even understand why anyone would pay for music anymore. I have to listen to a 15 second commercial every few songs, just doesn't make sense (to me) to pay to remove that.

Currently the playlist limit is what is keeping me from moving to Play Music from Spotify as i already pay for/waste money on YouTube Red. Seems to be a common hold up. Maybe they are reworking the whole system and re-branding to pull in people like me with a show stopper.

YouTube is like a drowning person, just grasping at anything within reach to keep their own head above water.

Whatever form it takes, it will almost certainly be gimped or not available at all for Canadians, just like all the other streaming services.
