WD Easystore External Discussion

Back to $299 and $199. I need to swap out my unopened seagate for one of these next time it’s in sale.

Just bought one for $150 for Cyber Monday deal, gonna pick up tomorrow from the local store. Hell yes!
Good deal indeed!

In for another one. I haven't had any issues with the first one a got. Really good deal at $150

I got 4 of the NESNs @ the $160 price and I got four Reds with 256MB of cache: WD80EFAX

I picked up two sets of two at different stores so different serial number prefixes and I got reds all the same. $150 is a solid deal IMO if you don’t want to bother with the 3.3v issue, but remember there’s still a solid chance you’ll get a white label in these too.

I did manage to order one of the NEBBs for backups, we’ll see if it ships. :)

I'm fighting with BB now trying to get a price adjustment of $10. :(
Update, no dice, I have to buy a new one and take the other one back.

That stinks to hear that. I'm still going to try and see what'll happen with a refund as mine haven't shipped yet. I'm having a feeling that we're going to have to do the same thing though.

I decided the hassle wasn't worth $10 so I just shucked mine, no issue, you will need to remove the USB/power PCB and the torx nuts on the sides of the drive, uses a T 10. I have a molex to sata from an old build so hopefully it will work fine.

received my drives today.
I have a copy of HD Sentinel. Should I run an extended test on these or would doing it via an extended SMART on the synology be ok?
Thanks!

If anyone is wondering, I shucked 6 of these and four were white labels. I can confirm that the whites do work in a QNAP TS453A without 3.3v issue.

So do we know what the differences are between the white and red label drives?

I had resisted these for so long, mainly because I don't have a NAS box yet, but I finally bit on two of the NESNs at $149. Both have EFAX drives and tested OK using the "Extended Test" included in the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics tool so I'm more than happy.

Now I need to go shopping for a NAS box :)

Is there a way of checking whether or not they're reds before shucking them?

Does it matter if they're whites in a Synology NAS?

I think the Red model numbers are well known and documented in this thread. CrystalDiskInfo is one tool that will show you the model number before you shuck.

Pretty sure I saw someone post on Reddit that they put whites into a Synology NAS and they worked fine. I think it was a ds218+. Maybe someone here has first hand knowledge.

Besides the 3.3v reset issue which may or may not affect you, they should be functionally the same. I think due to returns you should always test it though, because people put junk drives/clay/playing cards inside. Even if the 3.3v is a problem, a piece of tape will take care of that.

I'm just going to use a MOLEX to SATA adapter, I'll just cover the wires in electrical tape so it doesn't look like a ketchup and mustard.

Mine is going in an HTPC not a NAS.

Make sure you use a molex -> sata adapter that is crimped and not molded.

Do you have a picture of what a crimped one looks like? Mine is the standard molex going into a standard black SATA with one wire missing. I think it's the right kind.

i read on slickdeals: Made in thailand with DCM:MGBJRCK. That’s the one with 256mb cache. The one with 128mb says DCM:LGBJRCK. I got two but haven't had time to shuck them yet.

The $159.99 BF model was DCM:MGBJRCK. I am testing my 2 with badblocks.

Code:
root@sysresccd /root % badblocks -wsv -b 4096 -c 1024 /dev/sdc
Checking for bad blocks in read-write mode
From block 0 to 1953506559
Testing with pattern 0xaa: ^Ndone
Reading and comparing: 30.04% done, 18:10:23 elapsed. (0/0/0 errors)

I got two but haven't had time to shuck them yet.

I think I will wait till the warranty expires for that.

K. So I'm about to open them, but since the serial number on my NESN drive is a 7SGM number, it's almost certainly a White. Though two Synology models appear on the "works" list, so I may be OK.

Kinda sucks, since the NEBB models were still available at the time I ordered and I could have saved 30 bucks that way.

I'll try sticking one into the NAS and let it try to rebuild before opening the other.

Got one today, it's DCM: MGBJRCK with a NESN suffix on the model. Crystaldisk shows it as a WD80EMAZ.

TLER is enabled.
SCT Error Recovery Control:
Read: 70 (7.0 seconds)
Write: 70 (7.0 seconds)

I got one in the mail yesterday. It was the $149.99 one which ended up being a NESN on the box. Checked the drive and it was a WD80EMAZ white made in Thailand with 256mb cache. I got it for my Synology DS116 so I was worried that I would have the 3.3v problem preventing it from working. Installed it to the DS116 and ran the extended smart test which shows as normal. So all seems well as far as using the white drive in this NAS. Going to be great to have all this space. My old HP WHS had less space with 4 drive bays loaded.

All three drives completed bad blocks without issue, all support TLER, and my old corsair HX520 to Lian-LI hotswap bay had no issue powering the drives. I would have to open the case to see how the PSU is powering the back planes of the hot swap bays. All three drives were white label.

If anyone looking for these? I have 10 available at local Best Buys to me. All should be the 256MB Made In Thailand version.

Never heard turning moles to Satan before.
You're doing it wrong, then.
Traditionally, people would pay Satan with souls, though moles are much more easily sourced and equally sought after.
Though AFAIK, you can't get your original soul back with a mole, so if you were thinking of making a sacrifice, perhaps it is best to hold off until you buy some moles to trade.

You can't trade your soul to get the original moles back, either, so caution is advised either way.

Though I hear that a strange man with a drinking glass for a head has discovered how to get his soul back. It involves murdering flowers and dice and other creatures. Sounds sketchy to me.

the two i ended up getting were white labels. Looks like more and more white labels are starting to show up.

Got two white labels in NESN versions via online order. I guess I'll have to use a molex adapter for it. I'll try it first just in case. Antec Eathwatts 430 power supply.

Just got my NESN 8TB order in. Both were White Label EMAZ drives :( Seems the true Red's are drying up.
I have Corsair CX 430 PSU which is about 5 years old so I guess I'll need to fix the 3.3v pin.
Anyone have a good tutorial on that? I hear buying a SATA III extension and clipping one of the cable works??

thanks
