When I saw this story pushed out today across Business Wire, I knew I had seen it covered before. Below is a video from five years ago, but apparently Akili's Project EVO game is picking up steam in treating ADHD. Its seems as though the game has changed a bit over the years, but the basic principle remains the same.

Check out the video.

I know that years of First Person Shooter games have fully honed my....Squirrel! Now that we have that out of the way, let's all heatedly argue whether or not ADHD is real or simply a symptom of modern parenting.

Full analysis is underway and results of the study will be presented at an upcoming scientific conference and will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Based on the results of the study, Akili plans to file AKL-T01 with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clearance as a novel treatment for children and adolescents with ADHD.

ADHD is real.
However, I also see and work with parents that use ADHD (While the student has never been officially diagnosed) as a excuse out for their 'parenting style'. But I also see parents who don't use it as an excuse and seem genuinely wanting to help.

When dealing with parents and children you do what you can and drink a beer after work. Sometimes, chase it down with a shot of whiskey for good measure.

How exactly is a video game a drug? While I think there's merit here, I don't see why the FDA needs to be involved.

ADHD is real..

Sure for some small set of the population. But not anywhere near the numbers they are claiming - I have seen numbers from 5% to as high as 20%. Otherwise the human race has a serious degenerative neural issue...

I think many use it as an excuse...get your shit together and control your spawn.

Ironically I was talking to a doctor about ADHD and I told him I think I have it because I took Adderall in college and it really helped. He said if I can play 4 hours of the same videogame nonstop, I don't have it. LOL. So not sure how kids playing a video game helps them, or is it to prove they don't have ADHD at all?

"I bet you believe in the moon landing too don't you?"

Uh oh...Look everyone! It's a tool of the fringe! I feel you could be taken to the actual site on the moon, shown the lander, and would still insist that somehow we slipped something into him to make him hallucinate. Sad. And, just to make you look even more stupid, here is an article you should see about actually being able to see the leftover equipment from all of the missions, etc. with a TELESCOPE, And have been able to for years and years. Moron.

My child has officially diagnosed and confirmed by multiple doctors (some with multiple phd's) ADHD; severe ADHD.

When on meds he's able to complete work, when not on meds he's able to complete work if he has a person there sitting next to him and redirecting him back to his work the second he gets distracted. When on meds or off meds he's able to sit and play video games (mainly minecraft) for 4 hours without issue. I'm not saying video games are a potential effective solution, I do however recognize the ability of video games to completely captures the attention of those who have a medically diagnose condition that prevents them from being able to sustain it.

Before someone comes after me for the medicating my son part, we literally tried EVERYTHING for 2 years, special diets, special exercise, radically resigned coursework and learning scenarios, private tutors, specially designed glasses, and finally the whole range of bullshit homeopathic nonsense (because at this point, why the hell not). None of it worked for us; reducing artificial flavors/dyes and eliminating processed food intake did help, but not enough to complete 5 minutes worth of homework in under an hour. We even had to go through 5 different ADHD medications before we found the correct one and dosage (as identified by the dna sequencing he eventually went through) and now he finished his homework on his 10 minute bus ride home. He does his daily reading without complaint and retains information about what he's read. It's night and day, sometimes a chemical imbalance in the brain is literally a chemical imbalance in the brain. That said, there are side effects; and if there were literally any other way than medication to help him learn, I am all for it.

Actually that has next to nothing to do with it and that doctor was poorly informed on ADHD if he truly said "if I can play 4 hours of the same videogame nonstop, I don't have it" ADHD is actually a form of hyper focus, not lack of it. You focus on what you want to do, not what needs to be done unless the two happen to be one in the same. Most ADHD are terrible procrastinators because it's almost impossible to create interest in the thing that's being procrastinated against. It is more than "that person is just lazy and doesn't want to do their job". It's actually near impossible to do certain things unless you can find a way to get engaged. For this same reason you'll often see an ADHD person excel in a very short period over some new hobby/skill they have picked up only to toss it aside a week later. It's extreme hyper focus, until it isn't.

This is one of the most world renowned doctors, Dr. Barkley, explaining it, and explaining that it's not really a disorder - it just doesn't fit with the expectations of modern society (watch a few of the videos, posted a short one, because well, ADHD):

And these two are guys doing TED talks that really spoke to me

all of this allowed me to understand and explain things to my wife much better as to how my brain functions - after she watched this and the other videos, we have been able to function SO MUCH BETTER as she now understands how I think and process stuff and we have worked out ways to make notes/etc so I can still function as a good husband and father

There is a huge difference between a confirmed diagnosis (which you have) and what I call the school teacher diagnosis of Little Johnny/Jane is just "too disruptive" to class (translation: teacher doesnt want to deal with it) so s/he must have ADHD diagnosis. 90% of my coworkers that say their kids have ADHD have not had them formally diagnosed by a doctor who did anything more than accept the school teachers "diagnosis". Why they do that I will never know...
