A group of AI's recently banded together and produced a 5 track death metal album and released it for free. One AI did the music, one did the track titles, and the third created the album cover. I'm not a fan of death metal so I can't comment on the quality. I bet we have some aficionados here that could let us know if it's good or not. Go here for the free download and let me know what you think.

How do you describe ‘music’ created by a machine? There are no guitars, though on some of the tracks you’ll hear something very much like a guitar solo. And that thumping, bumping drum sound you hear? Not drums. It’s all just noise.

I'm sure the programming behind the scenes is super impressive but that sucked ass.

Nope, it's not subjectively good.
I'm pretty positive that it's not objectively good either, but my lack of knowledge of music theory prevents me from speaking to that.

Lol wisdom trippin wasn't bad both in name and style.

Interesting over all though

Gosh, thinking back to the old modular synth days you could connect things so the machine was in a "free run" mode and would produce streams of notes automatically.
A lot of it sounded very nice, very melodic but it wasn't called music by any means.

Ok so..I listened to them all (I apparently hate my ears).

1. Memoryearion - Pure unadulterated crap..doesn't resemble music in any sense.

2.Timension See #1

3.Wisdom Trippin' See #1

4. Energiveness
5.Inhusk

These two actually somewhat resembled music. To be precise they resemble more of a "Jam session" where everyone is sorta of on their own doing their own thing. So you have what appears to be a jumbled mess, but you can actually hear tidbits of "music" coming through.

All in all, terrible yes but very interesting when you consider the source.

Not that I expected it to be good, but did they have to record it over a tin can telephone stuffed with dirty socks?

This isn't good, but it was trained off of one album. Give it the entire history of Metallica, Pantera and a handful of other music of similar genre's and then lets see what it makes. It would probably be a lot better.

So ... I love me some death metal, and I do not love me some Krallice - Parja is right, that this really does sound a lot like what it was “trained” on.

If someone would give it Weakling’s first album I’d be a lot happier...

As someone who likes various types of music, ranging from classical to the obscure parts of metal etc, this wasn't metal, it was barely music. I guess it's a start though?

Wisdom Trippin' somewhat sounded like some crap I've heard at local bars; just toss in some unrecognizable growling and lyrics.

I kind of liked Inhusk. I'm not a Black/Technical metal guy, though, Death/Gore/Grind Metal is more my thing.

They should have set the bar lower and said the AI was making country music. Then people would be in fearful amazement at how much better it was than a human country musician.

It sounds like performing an abortion with a blender, so I guess that's metal?

I don't regularly listen to death metal, but as a musician I'm pretty open-minded about music in general. This is fairly impressive for AI. They could have picked an easier category of music to play, but didn't. 10 years from now it may be quite difficult to distinguish AI-generated music from a lot of pop music (which surprise surprise follows standard cadences & structures pretty consistently).

Interesting for AI to produce that. I'm sure over time it will learn how to play better and learn faster than I can ever dream of.

Being that I'm not much of a death metal myself, my opinion may be somewhat biased.
With that said, I think it's safe to say that the music making business isn't one of the areas that will be at risk of being taken over by machines anytime soon =:)

Only listened to the first song on the download page,
To me it was shoegaze black metal not death metal
Sounds similar to bands like Deaf Heaven, Alcest etc.
Was actually playing something like this in the car on the way home from work.
(my taste in music sucks)

I don't think it sounds like blackgaze too much. This lacks any kind of structure or emotion, not really surprised though since it's AI. Krallice has some kind of elements sorta though and that was it's reference.

Yeah I totally agree with what you are saying, but this is the first album out by our AI overlords. Maybe they will mix it up a little with the second :D

it honestly sounds like they chopped up segments of random measures throughout the album its based upon & cobbled them all together randomly in an overlay. as a death/black/thrash metal snob, im left in abject horror at the result. doesnt hold a candle to weakling, drudkh, withered, deathspell omega, krohm, etc etc which is the sound both the original album & the AI amalgamation are trying to emulate

now, as a scripting piece of scheiße who cant code properly, ill admit that setting up this AI is beyond me...& the concept is really fucking cool...but the end result is entirely underwhelming
