Got X dollars saved up in Cryptocurrency? 8k? Now imagine all that gone almost instantly.

For anyone here that's gotten a lot of cash in Bitcoin (Lucky fuckers *Ahrem*), think like a rich person if you don't want to lose it all. I'm hoping this message reaches someone and protects someone and their money.

1. Security First.
2. Get a financial advisor
3. Pay your taxes
4. Are your financial accounts really secure?
5. Don't tell people you have Scrooge McDuck's worth of Bitcoin or any other Cryptocurrency.
6. Don't link your financial accounts to your non-financial account emails.
7. 2 Factor Authenticators. Use them for your email, trades and other accounts as possible. Spend the few seconds of inconvenience. You may wish you had. SMS doesn't count (See below picture).
- Tip: Did you know Hardocp even has 2FA? It's true!

Hackers can get in, get your stuff, and get out within 15 minutes and it can all begin by hacking your phone number... Notice: I did not say hacking your phone.

Did you know that that telephone number goes to a office that closes 11 PM to 8 AM? Wow. What a coincidence.

Here's some important telephone numbers to speak to a real person, 24/7
Verizon:
0. 1-(888) 483–7200 -> Zip Code -> Either 1 or 4.
1. Temporarily suspend service on a lost or stolen phone.
2. Report unauthorized charges
3. Returning call from investigation department or recently purchased an order online that requires additional validation
4. Report Unauthorized calls
5. Credit reporting or Billing disputes

AT&T: I wasn't able to find a number. I did try. 800-288-2020 was the closest I could get to a 24/7 number.
Other Services: I didn't try to find a number.

Thanks for this, hopefully it helps someone! It is scary that people are able to just take over your damn phone number and now have all your 2FA SMS compromised :-(. Seriously, what the hell carriers?? We should be able to protect our #s and phone accounts with a secret PIN like those used with credit freezes such that an attacker needs more than a fake ID and walking into a store to take over and steal our accounts!

For any online accounts you want to protect you should use a secondary Gmail that you _only_ use for these financial accounts and nothing else. Protect that account with 2FA using the Google Authenticator (I think that's what it's called?) app rather than SMS authentication. Also go outside your usual pattern for the username (e.g. don't use your popular online handles or your name or whatever you usually use) and use a secure random password protected/generated using something like Keepass.

I read the link

Wow, Verizon lets you change phone numbers with billing information only?

That is seriously lax security right there... it's almost as if... they're cutting corners to save money and increase margins.

Pretty sure I've also heard of people going into tmobile stores with a fake ID and stealing accounts heh. :/

What about using a service like Burner Phone & make the number permanent? No carrier to back that up.

Not sure.

Might be best to use a unique Gmail account for a Google Voice number.

That seems to be the best option right now.

Good idea. I currently use Project Fi. I'm not sure how easy it would be do this to me.

Always keep your coins in wallets on your computer and not on the Exchange sites.
