MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries announced!

There are some recent videos on YT of the Heavy Gear Assault but we should probably have another thread for that.

I'm cautiously optimistic about MechWarrior 5, but have little faith in PG in pulling it off without screwing it up.

PGI somewhat aside, I'm looking forward to a mech game that takes advantage of modern capabilities. Destructible terrain, procedurally-generated maps, accurate rendering of damage to the mech models, AI that actually poses a challenge, etc.

The fact that they modeled humans is already something I haven't seen since MW3 and helps with the sense of scale.

so built on the ancient source engine? i know it's alpha but dang...

nah I looked it up, it says unreal engine, glad even PGI realize that going back to Cryengine isn't gonna work well for them.

I know I'm an oddball on this one but literally the only Mechwarrior game I ever really played was Mechwarrior 4: mercenaries. I've probably put 200 hours into it. Can not describe in words how excited I am for this.
You aren't the only one. I knew about the Mechwarrior games but never had a good enough PC to play them until MW4 came out. When that happened I bought MW4 and all the ex-packs. I played them for hundreds of hours. I tried to download the old Mechwarrior games but could never get them working right under WinXP for whatever reason. Maybe it was video or DX related, maybe it was WinXP, I don't know.

MechWarrior 3 was only only one I had an issue with.. still my favorite of the series, but eventually got it working in windows 7

I'd love to be hopeful that Mechwarrior 5 will be as good as the golden years for this series (Mech 2/3). But I've never heard anything good about Mechwarrior online so I doubt this developer will be able to pull it off.

Someone mentioned Heavy Gear, there is apparently a new version launching soon, although I doubt very much it has a lot of connections with the originals

So, I got into the beta for this. Seems more like pre-alpha to me...buggy as shit and crashes a lot. I managed to get into the server browser where there was one dude playing on a French server, and when I ran into him he couldn't figure out how to use weapons (apparently), and I shot at him for about 10 minutes straight, lots of hits, but no apparent damage at all. Eventually he just fell off a cliff and died.

Yea I got in too and had pretty much a similar experience and just uninstalled it afterward, they are selling early access on steam already, its just not near that imo.

Its closing in on 2018, any updates that anyone has heard of on this?

mechwarrior online isn't bad.. problem is the games severely held back by the fact that they're using the crytek 3 engine which is complete garbage.

I'm curious to here how this is progressing, if at all. I'd love a return the the MW2 or mercs days. Been a pretty long time since i found a mech game worth playing.

Have you looked at MechWarrior Living Legends?

In a few months it'll have been a year since we heard a peep about this game.

Pretty quiet given this game is supposed to ship in 2018.

If only this had real devs working on it, after MWO i have zero faith. Way more interested in Hairbrained schemes Battletech games coming out in a few months. That said i still hope this turns out well, would be nice to have another Mechwarrior game.

Thought that mechwarrior online looked like crap though. Have not played one since 3.

How did it look bad to you? Usually the engine gets props for visuals and it's the shitty netcode and hit detection that people complain about.

the mech model's look really good for what they have to work with when you max out the graphics. the map textures on the other hand haven't changed since the original crysis back in 2007. the rest you're 100% correct on and not even worth talking about at this point since it's still been the same issue that plagued the original crysis engine.

supposedly they could directly port everything they created for the crytek 3 engine to the unreal 4 engine but whether or not they actually do it will be hard to say.

Thats what I should have said. The map terrain was not that impressive.

this is pretty true, they released a new map in MWO just recently and its like going back to quake with brown nastiness. PGI has also been getting pretty bad on the mechs, especially the animations, lately. The mad cat mk2 walks like it has a stick up its ass.

yeah the new map excentuates all the problems with the way they have to make maps.. i've already found 4 texture box glitches where i've gotten stuck inside walls and structures.. as far as the MC MK2 that's a mech design issue, not a PGI issue.. there's a few mech's in the game that walk/move really poorly just purely because the originating mech design sucked. i mean after all if the atlas was real it would float in water just to give you an idea, lol.

the animations are terrible, it is a pgi issue. They developed the models and the animations.

Release window announced at Mechcon 2017:

December 2018. 4 player online co-op.

And a new trailer

The damage visible in the mechbay was a nice touch though I noticed they only seemed to have 4-5 mechs actually in game
I wonder if they are having to rework a lot of what they did in MWO?

They'll have more than 4-5 mechs. They said that each sector will have unique mechs, so you won't see every single mech in one playthrough. So it might only be a handful of mechs per sector, but we'll see.
