One big drive vs. multiple smaller?

I use my rig as a file server for Emby. Right now I have 4x2Tb drives. I want to buy an 8TB drive to consolidate everything. But I am worried about the possibility of losing all my data with one failure.

Is this a bad move? Any backup solutions that won't require two 8tb drives. (cloud is not an option as I have horrendous internet.)

Its a bad move not to have backups in the first place.

You could use your current drives to backup the 8 TB.

A second option (considering the WDC 8TB external drive is $129.99 on black Friday) is to sell all of your 2TB drives and buy an additional 8TB.

How are those 4x2tb drives mounted? Are they in a Logical Volume, Raided, etc., or are they seperate and distinct (Drive 1: TV shows, Drive 2: movies, etc.)...

Regardless, both your scenarios and the single 8tb drive are a horrible idea from a data loss probability standpoint.

That said, we do overkill here. I have 6x8tb drives in zfs with 2x drive redundancy, and I'm one of the 'cheaper' guys around here.

Seriously, some of the posts around here, you'd think they had a corporate budget.

Ha I was actually looking to buy one of those drives and then sell of the rest to not feel the cost.

They are all just separate drives nothing fancy. Its not the end of the world to lose all the data, but I guess losing it all in one shot would be pretty crappy.

I have a RAID 5 setup using 3x 3TB drives... it does me fine to partition them and store what I need where... I also backup to a 4TB External. It's not fast using the z77 motherboards Intel Rapid Storage features.. but it works and is handy.

Selling those drives isn't a good idea. Nobody wants to spend money on used mechanical drives. SSD drives or enterprise NAS drives are different. Can you keep those drives and backup to a single 8TB USB drive, such as the BB black Friday special?

Well I think I could easily get $40 a drive. Which would mean selling three to recoup the price of the 8TB, but maybe I am crazy.

But I am actually thinking about doing what you said, I made a new thread (maybe should have just posted here.
https://hardforum.com/threads/auto-backup-to-external.1948749/

To find some options that could automate backups, ideally without having the drive online 24/7.

I think you can expect $25 to $35 per 2TB used drive however it is possible to fetch a little more.

Investing in a raid5 setup would be a much more smart move then jus go from 4x2tb to 1x8tb. If your one big 8tb crapout, you are screwed.

Good to know, I would rather keep them at that point.

Yeah I'm thinking of using the 8TB as the backup.

What investment is required for raid 5? More drives? One of the main reasons I started this process was to consolidate all the drives in my rig. I have always stayed away from raid because I prefer a solution where the drives work fine separated from the raid/pooling system.

I am playing with the trial for a program called Stablebit, which so far is pretty great.

Lower random performance. Your motherboard probably already has software raid5 support.

I recommend snapraid.

http://www.snapraid.it/

I have used it for years on my home linux based pvr. I currently have two 8TB drives as parity and a mix of 6 drives (of various sizes 2 to 5TB) for the data.

With that said the role of the snapraid in system is to protect data from a PVR where a few GB sized files are added daily and rarely removed. Not many small files changing. Although I do have 10+ thousand recorded programs..

Looks pretty good. I see it has no GUI which is a negative for me. I am still weighing my options. Would be nice to have something in place. Stablebit seems pretty legit but it just duplicates files so there is a need for double the space. Which a single 8TB would satisfy.

I'm a small timer, but I would get the 8tb and sell 3 of the 2tbs. Use the other for important backup of the 8tb

I'm currently using a 4tb and backup the important stuff to 1tb. The rest, fingers crossed oh well
