Volkswagen will invest more than 10 billion euros ($12 billion) with its partners to make and develop a range of new-energy vehicles in China as carmakers step up investments in low-emission models in the world’s biggest auto market. Volkswagen will make the investments by 2025 and introduce 40 locally produced vehicles, its China head Jochem Heizmann told reporters in Guangzhou Thursday.

The German manufacturer joins Ford Motor Co. in boosting investments in electric-vehicle development in China as the country will require most automakers to produce various types of zero- and low-emission vehicles. The China plans are part of a broader push by Volkswagen, which in September announced a 20 billion-euro plan to build electric versions of all 300 models in the 12-brand group’s lineup.

I thought all this green stuff was a conspiracy created by the Chinese?

Nope

Everyone but the con-artist in chief knows global climate change is dangerous and it is by and large caused by humans.

Those who are smart (everyone else) are investing heavily in the future which is not oil/natural gas based.

GM already sells a third of their cars in China, they're the most important market for cars right now. The western markets are stagnant due to maturity, but China's going through a major car sales boom right now.

That's where big profits are at, backed by about a sixth of the entire world's population, and car companies are scrambling to get in on the action.

Electric cars need a price war.

This tech won't be mainstream until it happens. So the more manufacturers in the pool, the better.

and they have large populations outside of the big cities that have yet to be incorporated into modern transportation. They might ride the boom for a while.

Even more reason to hate two of the most bastard companies, ford and vw. Fuckers are content to pollute everywhere, but then turn around and push for cheap chinese made ev in china. Just remember that when you're looking at them in the showroom in your country, drop your pants, take a dump and walk out, because that's what they've done to the rest of the world.

Nothing like more coal powered cars to save the environment lol.

Even the worst case scenario is better than the status quo, and the best case one is drastically better, so it's a win regardless.

The piece above is a bit outdated now, the battery improvements since then have improved things even further, but this is still a cool way to measure your local efficiency benefits:

Based off of their estimates of infrastructure quality in 2015:

This is such a myth. And even if an EV only gets coal powered electricity it's still more efficient than an ICE-only vehicle.

There's even a great way to get past this too. I usually charge during the day and even while my Leaf is charging my solar panels are still producing enough to put energy back on the grid.

In the US worst case is 50% coal and 50% natural which would put the MPGe at around 43 mpg. Those who live in areas that are ahead of the curve (most of the US, even Texas with massive wind) get even better. And even if it's only 43 mpg now the nation-wide trend is green so that will only get better over time.

So we're going all nuclear.

I'm not against nuclear and for populated areas - major cities -there's likely no other choice. Needs to be gen III+ or IV though, no older tech. Beyond that solar and wind w/ hydro where it makes sense.
