As you might know, Star Wars Battlefront II has been getting a lot of thumbs down lately. And possibly rightly so as even other game companies are banging on how the game unlocks certain characters and missions. ACG, one game reviewer that I have come to appreciate just put his video online. I would highly suggest giving this guy a listen before you spend your hard earned money on this game.

Check out the video.

EA has panicked programmed themselves into a blackhole of stupid.

This time the screwing is without remorse.

The worst part is that this is a good game. The unlock system is horseshit, but the game itself is solid.

EA always at the forefront of the race to monetize everything. But, let's be honest here, it was Disney that gave Star Wars games to EA in the first place. The fact that Star Wars is a Disney franchise just takes all my interest and crushes it under a white-gloved fist.

Thanks, I was just about to ask this assuming I'd never get through the circle jerk lootgate "gambling" drama. The game looks great and I'm glad to know it plays well too. I couldn't care less about unlocks, and believe or not I am one of the few people who DID derive a sense of satisfaction unlocking things in previous DICE games (although it sounds like they have made unlocks virtually unobtainable without purchasing, still taking these claims with a huge grain of salt).

That's the sad part about games like this and Shadow of War. Great games severely damaged by publisher bullshit. DICE put a lot of work into fixing a lot of problems the first game had, but then EA had to go and be EA.

I'll wait for the 5.99 version, with the lootboxes removed. :)

Unfortunately, it's hard to wait with multiplayer centered games. By the time they are at a deep discount, the player base has moved onto the next numbered title...

Damn EA.

Kinda feel that the Dice/EA relationship is one of passionate, creative, greed (and sorta like Rockstar/TakeTwo with their more recent DLC/microtransactions of GTA).

The former has a lot of people who want to make a great, fun, game. The latter has their executives in place and control measures to make sure that every little aspect is monetized. Both parties are very creative and passionate about their work (one in game creation, the other in wallet raping).

The end result is a great game that is flawed in only it's hamfisted implementation of the monetization measures. It's like a craftsman making a beautiful wooden chair, handing it over to the sales department/distributor, and them hacking it up to sell it as components and upgrade paths.

Except the Shadow of War outrage bandwagon ended up being much ado about nothing. "OMG lewtbawkxez" and the game was perfectly playable start to finish without touching them.

And not to de-legitimize complaints about SWBF2, but yet again I suspect most of the people squawking were never going to buy the game anyway, some don't even have gaming PC's. People love viral controversies.

And not to be contrarian but the sense I get about the SWBF2 viral outrage is - yet again - most people squawking weren't going to buy the game anyway.

You mean all of the people overloading EA's refund system trying to get refunds? Those people?

No. Reading comprehension. There's a percentage of outrage bandwagoners that never gave a shit about the game - were never going to buy anyway - and just enjoy adding to the noise because it's easy and they want their #MeToo moment.

You said most people. I'm sure there is a percentage of folks who fit your description, but the response to these shenanigans is clear and widespread.

14 million people purchased the first Battlefront games, it was extremely popular. Now instead of trying to make a better game for those 14 million players, they instead will be trying to loot box them.

The potential issues affect PCs and consoles, so everyone’s experience with the game is at least somewhat altered by EA design choices here.

The Shadow of War stuff got a bit overblown, but there is still no excuse for loot boxes to exist in that game no matter how balanced the game is against them.

I played the two OG games. I have copies for my PS2 still on my shelf.

I would have bought this as it’s really up my alley, but I think I’ll pass now. In fact I know I’ll pass. If the SP game is worth it I’ll buy it for $19.99 at GameStop for the Xbox or something.

GTA didn't have any microtransactions. You must be confusing it with GTA Online.

Eventually people will clue in that Lootboxes aren't full of loot. The only one getting loot is EA, from you, if you're foolish enough to buy them.

All I want is fighter squadron. They can keep the rest of the bullshit, although I guess I'll rent it to play the 6 hour single player.

Why can't they remake/reboot Tie Fighter vs X-Wing? The engine here is sound, looks good etc. How fking hard can it be?

I think we can mostly agree this is just sad. What a way to ruin things.

They honestly might reboot it if the Starfighter Assault mode proves to be popular enough.

I just want Battlefront 2 (2005 version) gameplay with updated graphics and physics. Is that too much to ask? The star cards were bad in the first and even worse in the 2nd game (I only played beta in both).

i hope everyone shits on this business model to teach game publishers a lesson.

I think one of the warez groups will unlock all the shit.

I keep saying vote with your wallet and boycott.

I don't buy their stuff anymore. And this kind of nonsense is why.

So they can load it up with more micro transactions? No thanks.

Don't get me wrong. If it was a good game, I'd like to see it do well. But this nonsense needs to stop.

Unfortunately, Titan Fall 2, which didn't follow this horrible business model, didn't sell well enough.

Unfortunately, BF and others like it, which do follow this horrible business model, sell like hotcakes.

Fortunately, we all have the choice not to play if we don't want to.
