Hi guys. I bought a used i7 6700k to replace my i5 6600k. The problem is after installing the i7, i would get bsod. I can get to bios but after bios i would sometimes make it to log in to windows but after few minutes I will get a bsod. I tried resitting the cooler but no luck. When i put back my i5 again its back to normal. Any possibility i get a dud cpu?

Motherboard is maximus impact viii with latest bios. Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Did you check for a BIOS update and reset the BIOS to factory defaults?

Did everything from clearing cmos to pulling battery out and still no luck. Looks like i got scam by the seller. Cant even contact the seller anymore. The price was too good to be true.

I've swapped CPUs without really doing anything and it always worked without and problems. It sounds like there might be something wrong with chip.

Look on the bottom of the CPU to see if there are any burnt/broken/damaged capacitors... That will cause it to have issues

Yeah that looks like it. The seller looked like a guy who wouldnt scam anybody. Shame scammer able to sleep at night while scamming people who earned their money the hard way.

What blue screen do you get? Makes the difference.
As soon as i exit the bios ill get the blue screen right away. Tried to reinstall windows as well but it would freeze up during installation. Sometime ill make it to the windows but after few minutes it will bsod again.

BSOD contains actual error messages that describe what the problem is - what's the error message?

You need to do some more testing -
  • boot to live linux dvd/usb
  • memtes86+ (often included on live linux images)
  • minimal components - onboard video, 1 memory stick, no unneeded peripherals, etc
  • reseat CPU in socket, inspect socket pins for any issue
  • go back to old CPU - does issue persist?
