The PC Version of “Doom” Absolutely Wrecks the Competition

Can we take a moment to appreciate the Switch version too? It's not *nearly* as downgraded as I expected.

This is a portable that draws only 15.7W of power. To me this is an incredible achievement.

I would happily play that version of Doom on the train during my commute.
Actually, the Switch itself only consumes about 9w or so maximum when not charging.

But console fanboys be like.

Except any decent PC bought in the last half a decade only needs a GPU the price of a console to be vastly superior.

Yes, but they always under price a console, basically its always the base model. So in can $600 for the xbox x. Then if you want all four controllers your in for another $65 a pop, or $195. Now your at $795 and you need a tv, so $300 for HD, $1000 for 4k.

Yeah the tv will outlast the console (hopefully), but your true initial cost is closer to $1,600+.

Yea but most people already have a TV for other purposes. And I know some of you on here will try to deflect and say I'm wrong you've used a monitor and you know x many people that don't own TVs, but its pretty unanimous at least in America that almost every household already has a TV of some sort. Obviously not 4k HDR 120hz OLED or something crazy, but they do have a TV. So it doesn't make sense to include that.

And 4 controllers? Worst case they would be buying 2-3 controllers, as pretty much any console comes with at least 1 controller, usually these days there are bundles to get two (my xbone came with 2 and the switch only comes with one but functionally can be split apart to give 2 player out of the box. Not to mention PCs do not come with a controller at all even though they are borderline mandatory these days if you're into the types of games that are most popular on console.

The truth is, for the vast majority of people, the cost of a console is simply buying the console + buying games. If they are into playing online, then you can tack on that as well, but that's about it as far as comparisons to PC gaming go.

And while PC games still have great sales through Steam and such...

If you've been paying attention you'd know that for the most part Amazon has been aggressively working to change that giving a pretty giant discount on any new game purchases if you're a prime member, which most people are, and Sony at least has pretty amazing deals on the store each month. Horizon can already be had for $20.

Like, at one point in time I agree, they were pretty close, but these days you can pick up an Xbox One S for $249 or a PS4 slim for $300 and... that's all you need. That will come with the console, a controller, and if you shop around, a game as well.

And if you get a yearly subscription to Live or PSPlus then that isn't any more than $20 a year if you look around on black friday. And each of those services include monthly games as well.

So really, for $350~ max before tax you could have a current gen console fully equipped and ready to play.

I just really fail to see how any PC you could build for that price would be able to include a legal copy of Windows, a really nice controller that runs $60, and be just as easy as plugging it into the wall and into the TV you already have while still providing a fluid experience and graphics equivalent to those consoles.

And I say all this as a guy with a really nice PC and a 144hz monitor. I know the power of PC, but I just don't understand how you don't see that the price of a console is, not matter how you slice it, better value for your money.

Its just that here on hardocp, its not better value for our money because what we value and what the general market value are very different things.

I bought a 1080GTX, sat it on my desk, and plugged into to my monitor. Nothing happened. What else do I need to do to make it run Doom?

Don't be mistaken, I was pointing out that just 1 component of the PC costs as much as the Xbox X.....confirming your statement.

It's sharper, but why is it so washed out? I prefer how the Xbox looks as it is closer to original (if PC is the reference).

The Switch is ok for what it is, but runs at half the framerate and is blurry and flat looking relatively speaking.

Washed out== He didn't know how to set up the Color range between Limited and Full and thus have a mismatch between the ps4 and the capture device.

You get what you pay for? Shocker! If they're going to do comparisons, it might be fun to compare the various consoles vs. a PC that costs the same.

People always say this, and it's a fallacy. You purchase a computer and can upgrade it. The initial cost may be high, but it doesn't cost much to maintain or improve when you want. I'm still rocking an overclocked 8320 and my last upgrade was a 290x I got as a steal. When I upgrade again, I'll just get a new motherboard/ram/cpu and drop the 290x back in. Case is fine, PSU is fine, HD's fine, monitor and peripherals are all fine. Like I said, I'm still on an 8320 and really have no reason to upgrade at the moment for my needs. When I do, It will cost less than an XBOX1X.

Exactly, there is endless possibilities and the price is up to you. A refurb/surplus workstation or even used i5 office PC can be found for a few hundred or less. (My college recently sold i7 HP Z200 series workstations for $80 CAN, for example.) Toss in a new 1060 or used 1070 and your done.

Well, no shit. That doesn't make the console versions worthless.
What really makes the console versions of this FPS worthless is the fact that you will most likely be playing it with a gamepad, with freakin' [Edit] auto aim aim assist.

Let's not also forget that with PCs, online is free. Also, on PC, you have the choice of multiple online stores, and the games you buy are backward compatible, so you don't have to buy them again every time you upgrade your graphics... and how about all the sales and bundles... and, and, let's be honest, the online PC community is far FAR less toxic.

No, it does NOT have auto-aim. Christ, aim assist has been a common part of console FPS games since the first Halo on the original Xbox, SIXTEEN years ago. I think it is well past time people stopped pretending they don't understand the difference.

PC Master Race FTW, obvs. But I wish people would stop using Doom as a benchmark. That thing will hit 60fps @ 1080p on a potato.

How about Deus Ex - Mankind Divided? That thing punishes my rig w/1070 unless I tweak the settings endlessly. It is the current era Metro 2033. Don't believe me? Try 1440 on max settings and enjoy the slideshow.

Sorry about that, my console lingo is not quite up to the par. I have made the necessary correction.

I'm not going to read the rest of that, but uh 65*4=260 (not 195).

I bought a switch so I can play Doom on a long road trip, or on the can, or in bed. THAT REASON ALONE SHOULD MAKE YOU WANT TO BUY IT. That game is going to look fucking amazing on a 6" screen. It wont hold a candle to my PC though, but that is decidedly less mobile =P

Why cant I have both?

My wife said the Switch is the best 6" she has had in bed.

I am more than likely going to play Doom from beginning to end on my XBox One X. :) Sometimes, I just prefer that over sitting in front of my computer, which is just to the left of the TV. Crazy thing is, I gamed far more often when all I had was an MX420 or a 3DFX 3D Monster II because, to put it bluntly, most things out today just are not all that impressive.

This PC Master race thing is a complete joke and this is coming from someone who has a PC that is far faster than most here have. (1700X at 3.825 Ghz, Vega 56 running at full tilt, 4k monitor goodness.) I have friends that enjoy gaming today on far less capable hardware and they know nothing of this PCMR stuff.

Not sure if the Xbox One X can upgrade Doom, but it wouldn't shock me if it could

Yet there is still that up-front cost. It's still 2x-3x as much as a console. Sometimes more like in this case. Let's also not forget that running the game on lesser hardware isn't going to reproduce the same image quality that this guy pulled on a top of the line Intel system with a GTX1080. They might in stills, but pulling 4K/Max details in Doom isn't the "gimme" people make it out to be. For the cost of his one system you could buy ALL THREE consoles and some games/accessories. Sure, you can upgrade that video card in a few years, but it's not like that outweighs that initial ~$1200 investment. The lifespan of the current consoles is only expected to be another 2-3 years so it's not like a console player can't buy another $400 machine (the price of a solid, but not amazing video card) in that same timeframe.

This times 1000! Making me excited for games like Skyrim. I could do the grinding for skills or knock out a few minor quests on my way into work or lunch break.

For the cost of their rig, you could buy all 3 of the normal consoles (Xbox One S, PS4 Slim, Switch). Probably a couple games and some accessories, too. The video card alone costs more than Xbox One X or PS4 Pro. It’s a laughable comparison. Of course it looks better. It's like showing a Tesla next to a Camry.

The PC does a million other things too.

Well color me not shocked.

But seriously, I know things look different when you're moving around but the Switch version was downright painful to look at, it's all blurred to the point that my eyes were trying to focus on the image which they obviously could not.

I think there is an enhancement patch planned for the One X and right now Doom already looks better on the console due to the overclocked processor and Xbox One games using half the GPU by default. Doom can run at 1080p/60 constantly on the One X while on the base hardware it couldn't. Only thing the One X doesn't improve with Doom is the anti-aliasing. It uses FXAA I think and it looks blurry at times.

.

Big reason I have problems going back and forth between PC and console. It takes me a while to adjust. Some games are great with a gamepad (platformers, etc.). FPS's are just not it. Keyboard & mouse all the way. It really shows on my K/D ratio. Console it really sucks. PC it's ... well, it sucks too. Just not as bad!

This shouldn't be happening. Some one better have a word with the guys at ID. "Don't makes the rest of us look bad." Someone's going to have to tell them that their next release should have more parity. Give em an offer they can't refuse.

1. 4 controllers total, the figures I gave already accounted for the 1 controller included.

2. TV absolutely makes sense, you have to have one to run any console, and just by having a console it adds to that desire to have a bigger/better tv in the house. If we are going to be accurate on this portion of the cost we'd need to know that average time a TV is spent being used by a console vs a cable box.

3. buying old hardware at a discount (non-pro/x models) same can be done with a PC. If your just running 1080p you can easily work with a 9xx series gpu.

4. buying old hardware does not make you current.

5. never said it was a better value, just that people always under value the cost of a console.

So, just by having a PC, it adds to that desire to have a bigger/better monitor in the house. If we are going to be accurate, we need to add that cost into the cost of a PC as well. After all it is no PCMR without it. :) Oh, and why would anyone need 4 controllers? Guess if you are talking about multiplayer, than on a PC, you would need 4 computers, monitors, keyboard, mice and controllers than.

Actually the people using PCs in general far outnumber people using them strictly for gaming.

True but, he said millions of other things and most folks use them for only a handful of things. Therefore, the idea, at least for him, that consoles are really only good for gaming is not correct, at least the way I took what he said.

All this high end gaming talk has given me a huge desire to play some C64 games. Time to fire up VICE.
