Sean Parker, the founder of Napster and former president of Facebook, said the thought process behind building the social media giant was: "How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?" He admits that he did not understand the consequences of a billion-user network and its effects on productivity.

"We need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you ... more likes and comments." "It's a social-validation feedback loop ... exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology."

That's hilarious.

a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever...

Hmm.. dopamine hit.. I wonder if the real reason for the increase in ED is facebook?

Makes sense. That is pretty much what it is. Kudos to him for acknowledging they didnt see all consequences of such a thing.

I actually just deleted a few weeks ago my facebook after years of use. Never going back.

I still have my Facebook account. I use the FB messenger quite a bit for communication with family member. However, I only log into Facebook itself maybe once every other month and am on there for maybe 5 minutes.

It has been like that for years and I feel no urge to use Facebook whatsoever.

See, if I could force myself to use it for only that, I might consider keeping it. As it is, it was a time sync, and a data-mining platform. My opinion now is, if you want to contact me directly, contact me directly.

yes good old facebook a nosey neighbour posts about the supposedly neglected dog next door saying the family is away next thing you know the house has been burgled twice before they got back.

I don't post anything on facebook and never will.

Social media turns closet narcissists into a full blow D-bags. I've been saying this for a while now.......its the worst thing that this planet has ever seen, though some good things come from its use. Overall its a terrible thing and causes more division that brings people together.

But don't worry, they would NEVER let their app listen to you and suggest ads based on said listening to you. :)

I do not book face, and I never shall. However, I am not a 16 year old girl, so I am not the target audience.

i never even started using facebook, and I feel great. No judgment, no wasted time. I never believed in oversharing to seek validation.
I wish I bought facebook stock early on though. Look at that shit now damn

Everything in life is like this though, its what drives you to buy fashionable clothes, have a nice house, buy a nice car, get a good job. So what? It is your job as a human to separate purposeful activities from leisure and not allow the latter to consume you. It took me a long time to get on Facebook even though I was in a university when it was a much smaller company. When I did, it was because Facebook had become so ubiquitous that it had gained purposeful activities. It was becoming the better place to buy and sell things in hobbies I have because the people who make forums such as this one never did try to keep up with the times and be competitive. So now a ton of people out there treat Facebook like a forum, to discuss hobbies, trade things, buy things, get jobs etc...
