If you felt constrained by the old 140 character limit that Twitter had then you will hail their move to double that limit to 280 characters. I'm not a real fan of Twitter, but I know most of you use it and I'm sure this is going to be met with open arms in the community. Go forth and tweet bigger, and badder, than ever before!

The new character length won't apply to Japanese, Korean or Chinese-language tweets. Those languages can convey twice as much information in less space, so tweets will remain at 140 characters, Twitter said.

I've had a twitter account for about 10 minutes. I was at a Linkin Park concert and your tweets would scroll on the screen before the show. Then I deleted it.

It's interesting that they tested this, found a very small percentage of people that went beyond 140, and still decided to implement it.

Another example of white opression! We demand equality in character numbers!

Thank the Lord. It is about time Twitter rose to the occasion to begin addressing the needs of its users. Let me tell you why I believe this to be an improvement. First, often when discussing current events with compadres on a social atmosphere such as Twitter, one finds onesel

It's not like there haven't been a bajillion ways to get around the 140 character limit. I suspect that tiwtter is less interested in the total usefulness of 280 characters than it interested in reducing the redirection of their user base to outside resources to get what they were getting anyway.

Great. Now I can see 280 characters of some random douchbags opinion passed on as news.

Now you have twice as much to say to get you in trouble in the future for sexism, racism, homophobia, pedophilia, etc.

what was a single tweet size when tweeter first started?

It's always been 140 characters? Just that some of things that count have been relaxed, like URL's are a fixed amount now. And I think some of the tags don't count either.

EDIT: side note, I think some of you here would like the Soapbox sub forum. Plus you help support this fine site.

IT'd be funny to see Twitter usage go down dramatically after such a change... I think people enjoy the limited space but they don't always realize it
