T-Mobile and Sprint have jointly announced that they have ceased talks to merge, as the companies were unable to find mutually agreeable terms. Neither side is specific about what went wrong, but their remarks suggest an uneven power balance.

“The prospect of combining with Sprint has been compelling for a variety of reasons, including the potential to create significant benefits for consumers and value for shareholders. However, we have been clear all along that a deal with anyone will have to result in superior long-term value for T-Mobile’s shareholders compared to our outstanding stand-alone performance and track record,” said John Legere, President and CEO of T-Mobile.

It would have been interesting to see this happen leaving 3 behemoths to maintain a good balance in the industry. All large enough to have the resources to build out an excellent network, but with enough competition to keep consumers from getting totally screwed. I hope neither of them fails anytime soon.

And I don't want to be a T-Mobile customer. Actually I wouldn't care as long as the network coverage of the 2 were combined. But T-Mobile by itself sucks around here.

Both T-Mobile and Sprint networks suck once you get off a highway.

I've had no issues with maintaining full bar or close to it 4G LTE service with T-Mobile in the rural areas between Harrisburg and Lancaster PA, far from the high way at that. 2 years ago was a whole different story, T-Mobile isn't full of shit when they claim to be expanding their network. I haven't heard such talk when it comes to Sprint though.

Do you honestly think 3 behemoths would seek to compete with each other as opposed to having some closed door meetings and all of them raising their prices collectively? As someone I know said before "I've never known a business to be more interested in competing than making money."

They could do that now, and maybe already have been for years and years.

The merger of these 2 wouldn't have any substantial impact on their ability to collude and price fix. What it would do is give 2 shitty networks the ability to better compete on a nationwide level with combined resources.

I think they are messing with us and will “surprise “ us on Monday, by confirming the deal is already done.

Where I live, Sprint is better than AT&T. Back roads are fine as well. Band 41 is excellent where it’s available.

Sprint wanted to maintain control of itself. T-Mobile wanted full control of Sprint. Neither could agree and the deal is definitely dead. Supposedly Sprint has eyes on Charter now.

Even though sprint has some horrid coverage out west, out east it isn't so bad. In fact they have a lot of spare bandwidth at their disposal. If anything I would think sprint would have the upper hand. Sprint has so much extra bandwidth, they lease it out to the likes of companies like Republic Wireless.

in my part of Michigan T-mobile doesn't work worth a damn unless you're in a decently sized town/city. Sprint is the only carrier that has any real connectivity that could even be considered usable. If you're not capable of connecting to a Sprint tower out here, your phone is essentially a brick with apps on it.
