Hey everyone.

I spent the last week or so diagnosing a motherboard issue that caused me to lose the use of my second GTX 780 because of a faulty PCI slot. This showed me how weak a single 780 really is in regards to 4K gaming on modern games. So, I decided that I would like to upgrade to one single card that is a bit more powerful.

I’m not longer making the income I was, and cannot splurge on a $750 card because I am now a full time college student.

I was looking at used GTX 980 Ti’s, and it seems they have become pretty affordable at around $300. My question is that I am curious if it is worth the $300 to upgrade from a single GTX 780, or even SLi 780s (fixing motherboard issue causing no SLi) to a single GTX 980 it? Are they really that much faster in 4K gaming?

Just looking for real world experience on this.

Thanks!!

980 Ti is about as fast as a 1070 (faster if you OC the crap out of them OC vs OC).

1070 is doable in 4k but you will have to drop settings liberally.

Go look at sites that have 1070 as one of the cards when testing at 4k and make your choice.

It will definitely be better than 780 by miles.

980Ti is about 50% faster than a 780Ti, which is what, like 20-30% faster than a 780? OC it and the gap widens. For playable 4K you would probably have to go with High or Medium settings for very demanding games if you want 60 FPS. There is often very little difference between Ultra and High, so you aren't going to lose much.

A single 980Ti overclocked should beat your old 780 SLI setup with ease. If you can find one for $300.00 I'd jump on it.

I'd wait for a little while, see what the impact of the 1070Ti has on the market. You might be able to snag a cheap 1080.

I'm on the same boat. 780gtx 3770k waiting on price drop on vega 56 to 399 perhaps black friday sales are good this year. So if you can wait for black friday its right around the corner.

Yeah, I think black friday or a used 980 ti is the way to go right now. Thanks!!

So you have two 780ti's? If you're looking to spend 300, you should sell the 780ti's, add that to your 300 and that should get you a 1080.

I agree. If you have 2 780's sell them and get a used GTX 1080. Don't settle for a 1070 if you need/want 4K

I will have to agree with the users above. If you have two (2) 780s now, I would jump towards a 1080. Now, I'm not sure the market really fell with the used 1080s with the release of the 1070TI as I see quite a few on reddit for around $475 to $500. At that point just go new. I have linked an example of a new one with Destiny 2. Seems like a good option in terms of the latter.

I do have two GTX 780 lightning non Ti cards. I planned on selling them. I will most likely go for a new 1080 in a few weeks during black friday.

I wonder how much a new motherboard would cost for you.

There's also the 1070Ti.

I can't run the latest and greatest with all the settings on 5 mil pixels (3440×1440) with a 1080. Just be ware.
