MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Ti GAMING TITANIUM Review @ [H]

Great review Kyle, at $449 it is actually not a bad price for >90% performance of the 1080 for 90% of the price, thought at $479, it doesn't really make any sense. Hopefully this will drive 1070 price down below 399, looking for a cheap upgrade for my nephew rig.

As I said elsewhere Vega must be doing something right to get NV to react.

Looks like we'll have to see which directions street prices go after the dust settles

Nice review gents. Fell about where I thought it would in terms of performance. A shame market winds are not prevailing for the consumer on pricing.

Telling where AMD is at if nV can simply tweak their 1 1/2 year-old chip to compete with AMD's (near) top-end. nV has a lap lead on AMD... a year earlier. It's a "sittin' pretty" spot to be in, especially when you consider comparative chip margins.

I think that Nvidia is above a lap ahead.

AMD is still catching up to the 9 series.

Nvidia is waiting for something to yawn about.

Nvidia needs to keep the game going and not get to complicit soon when they start to make more and more third party chips for other types of devices and AI learning.

You can get Vega 56 for $400 right I just order one and by the way GTX 1070 is also gone to $400 which now at the same cost but that was ZOTAC ITX size, To me the Vega is better deal now that it has gone down in price

Better than I expected, but for new games (ie dx12 and Vulcan) it looks like Vega is the slightly better buy unless you go budget be damned and grab a 1080ti. If you do a lot of dx11 gaming the choice is obviously Nvidia.

How about VR? There are enough new cards and games out there for a full VR roundup. I know AMD has improved their drivers for VR quite a bit, but where does this all shake out now? Waiting for DoomVFR/Fallout4VR/SkyrimVR?

Awesome review as always. Quick note: I think the temp results chart on page 14 has the OC temps and stock temps transposed.

Unfortunately this doesn't make the decision on a card any easier as I'm always considering freesync vs. G-Sync monitors as well.
This looks like a great card, but if it's still going to cost me $200-$300 more for a card and adaptive sync monitor than the Team Red solution, well..

That is certainly true if I was looking at 400 gpu budget, Vega 56 is a good deal, but for now, I am looking at the sub 400 pricing and I find GPU selection there pretty lacking. In my opinion, I feel like Nvidia can grab the 300-400 market range by decreasing the price of 1070 a bit further.

I don't think it's a good deal at the price they are asking. Not when deals pop up every week on 1080's for under $500. Newegg just had a Gigabyte 1080 + Destiny 2 for $469 after rebate. I'd take the 1080 all day every day over the 1070ti.

Thanks for the review. Very informative as always.

Definitely a nice gpu by MSI and I will certainly recommend it to anyone purchasing new in this price range. Man I would love to see that cooler on a Vega card! Anyone fromMSI around here!? Anything to help temps/noise over the reference blower.

I still think Vega 56 at msrp is better buy. I picked one up for 427 and change after tax and am super happy with it.

That is because we are running a faster RPM fan profile when overclocked. It is needed to keep the overclock stable under gaming load.

I doubt Nvidia has any direct control over their AIB partners for 1070 pricing.

The only way to get 1070 below 399.00 USD in the current market conditions (miners buying every single 1070 they can get) would be for them to lower their direct selling price for the FE model on their website.

https://hardforum.com/attachments/upload_2017-10-30_11-28-57-png.41477/

Their AIBs would probably be in open revolt if Nvidia pulled a stunt like that.

Literally the only thing keeping the 1070 Ti at MSRP is the fact that Nvidia is selling the 1070 Ti FE directly from their own website.

That other reason why I had gone with the Red team the cost of G-Sync really jack up the price it to bad that Nvidia doesn't support FreeSync

At one time the 1070 was at $330 that same ZOTAC ITX size but I end have bump my budget when thing start get out hand with price take a turn for worse before I could even get there so that was a bit drag.

The temperatures are correct, the OC temps are with the fans running at 80% vs. auto normally.

the graphs are misleading, comparing stock FPSs agains Oc results. In the end both 1080 and Vega 64 are unfairly pitted against OCed 1070Ti.

using the same graph one can show everything, just comparing stock Vega 56, 1070Ti, Vega 64 and 1080 on one graph and OC results on the other.

and a 1070ti review worth the card main purpose should show mining performance, because this is a miners edition GPU.

Ah, so due to the difference in the fan profile, the OC temps are in truth significantly lower than stock temps at both idle and load?

Yes, they are much lower with the fans running higher, even when overclocked and more voltage applied.

At that price, I agree, but it is not always guaranteed. As always shopping around is going to be very important on all these GPUs. It's hard to gauge value right now with price fluctuations and inflations as they are. There can certainly be good deals to be had, if you look around, and with a little luck of the draw, but these deals are not very common right now.

"When we overclock the video card and turn the fan up to 80% the temperature never rises above 54c. At idle, by default, the fans do turn off hence the higher idle temperature. On the overclocking row we have the fans turned up there to 80% hence the 27c idle temp."

Derp. Reading comprehension ftw.

the graphs are misleading, comparing stock FPSs agains Oc results.

Yeah, cause who wants to see how much uplift the overclock provides compared to stock clocks, and if the 1070 Ti can reach GTX 1080 performance levels when overclocked and how close it can come to Vega 64, who really wants to see that, those darned reviewers wanting to show all the information and stuff and let the reader decide for themselves, how dare reviewers show detailed thorough information and data comparisons, how dare they do all this work

In the end both 1080 and Vega 64 are unfairly pitted against OCed 1070Ti.

Describe how we were unfair?

I thought you said the 1080 was an unfair comparison, or unfairly "pitted against", but now you want the 1080 in the same graph as Vega 56 and 64? You are contradicting yourself.

You know, you can just look up between the graphs and see how they compare quite easily, all the data is there.

and a 1070ti review worth the card main purpose should show mining performance, because this is a miners edition GPU.

No where on the card does it specific this is a "Miners Edition" card, and it was never marketed as such. This is a gaming video card, and we evaluated it for gaming. If you deny the gaming potential of it, you are ignoring its intention.

If it's causing you that much frustration, then ignore the OC results and simply compare stock vs stock. I don't OC my GPUs, so the OC results are irrelevant to me. But they are there for those that want to get into a new GPU with the intent to OC right out of the packaging.

The review states that Nvidia designed and released the 1070Ti specifically with good OC'ing potential, so I'm happy to see that [H] put both the stock and OC results in every comparison graph.
(This isn't something new for [H]...you can go back over many previous generations of GPUs that were reviewed and you'll see OC'ing results and comparisons)

Besides, Vega (especially V64) with the reference cooler sucks for OC'ing, so the comparisons of stock Vega vs stock and OC'd 1070Ti are more in line with what anyone would experience in real world gaming, since Vega won't grant much performance over stock form when OC'd.

These temperatures are superior to the NVIDIA Founders Edition and the reference AMD Vega temperatures

Don't you mean inferior?

I expected the Ti to overtake Vega56 in pretty much everything, but it seems they are very close overall. Did vega56 improved performance via drivers?

I'm happy with my Geforce 1070, but maybe I should have sold it when it was at going for over $400 and get a Ti.

BTW its perfectly clear why nvidia didn't want factory OC cards. They would step on the gtx 1080.

Vega56 has quite a bit of overhead - to where it can match v64 when oc'd. V64 not so much headroom, but Vega56 appears to be the sweet spot price/performance wise and at max oc's for both the 56 and 64 aren't far apart and you get v56 for $100 less. V56 is $399 on amazon right now, I'm tempted to grab one. Just need an up to date VR performance review...

To be fair, it is only half the story to have only the reviewed card OCed. If one is interested in OCing, it stands to reason they would overclock whichever card they get so an all cards OCed comparison would be rather useful. What good is it to know how the card compares overclocked to a stock higher model when deciding to invest a bit more or not? If I'm thinking about adding the extra $50 and I'm an overclocker, I would like to know what those $50 would bring me. This review doesn't answer that question, only stock vs stock.

As close as Vega 56 and 1070Ti are in performance, at MSRP, it's a hard decision. A bit more performance overall out of 1070Ti, but at $50 price premium. One of the big factors that could tilt me green is the noise profile. Another site took actual noise measurements, reviewing the FE card, and it was considerably quieter than the Vega 56 stock cooler.

Of course, actual retail prices will have a big impact on value, and unfortunately, I am not in the position to purchase either of these. I really wish 580's were down to original release MSRP.

1070s are in stock like crazy all over, ZOTAC mini are $500 CAD which is darn close to $399 USD

You don't even seem to realize that the only reason why 1070 are at 399.00 USD at all is due to the Nvidia main website selling 1070 FE at 399.00 since the 1070 Ti announcement.

Literally 100% of the shift in prices in the past few weeks was due to Nvidia selling 1070 FE and 1070 Ti FE directly from their own website.

Even the 100% bought and paid for AMD shill sites agree with that assessment, lulz.

Thank you guys very much for the review! I'm putting together a new desktop for Christmas and definitely am going with a Vega 64 now. I want to try out one of the adaptive sync technologies and going Vega saves me $200 - $300 over gysnc. Hopefully it will have the power to run a 1440 ultrawide.

Huh?

As of today with current drivers, Fury X trumps 980 TI. Thats king of the hill for 9 series and actually aligns closely with 1070 performance. Obviously Vega is faster than Fury X...

Great review, I'm glad you went into overclocking the card. I wish Nvidia would had put this out at the $429 price point, $489 is unreasonable with the 1080 only being 20-40 dollars more.

I don't think it can much more than the regular GTX1070 as both run at the same memory frequency. So probably miners will skip it.

Nvidia put the GTX1070Ti FE out at $449. This is an AIB card.

In cherry picked games, sure. Except none of the DX12/Vulkan aka AMD favored games really pushed the envelope on anything. Maybe Deus Ex, but DOOM and Wolfenstein aren't impressive from a graphical perspective.

Nvidia "reacted" to Vega because they see easy money to be made. AMD is still throwing out gigantic, power hungry GPU's that can't even match Nvidia's high end (1080Ti).

Certainly doesn't trump my 980 Ti /shrug

Because Both 1080 and Vegas did not showed OCed results

No where on the card does it specific this is a "Miners Edition" card

Except that it is the same glorified GDDR5 that miners loved, boosted with more CUDA cores. I grant you that at this moment the mining community is not being particularly overwhelmed by the 1070ti launch , which can mean that miners will not crave it, or that they are keeping silence and buying all the stock before hashrate tests are displayed.

and selling every one of them. AMD has been making a killing on the GPU mining market since the 480.

In the long term, that really doesn’t matter. Nvidia is still easily outselling them with higher margins at that, 1070’s also got hit hard by miners, as did 1060’s.
