The [H]ardForum Perpetual Freebies Thread

Well I agree completely, just what ends up sitting around. No rush or worries, just trying to do better than the trash.

well im sure it wont take long for people who wants stuff for art or builds to distinguish themselves so whomever can just have whatever.

I'm trying to throw a system together for a buddy going to school, and he's pretty broke. I got an old Phenom II x4 940 with a board and RAM, but no video card worth a spit to use in it.

Does anyone have a midrange PCIe video card that's like a GTX 660 or 750Ti kicking around so he can somewhat play modern games even on low settings?

I know it's probably a long shot.

Free + shipping
A local computer store is clearing out the back room and has loads of really classic computer hardware.
As I go thguh it ill be posting what I dont pinch here ;)
If you pay shipping + associated fees, You can have (stuff)

AMD axd2800kv4d on MSI MS-6734 v1 with back plate - Un tested as I dont have any DDR ram.
If you are close to 96097 and can pick stuff up, there are also some very nice (classic) cases too.
Would hate to see all this great retro stuff hit the trash.
Looking for a DFI lanparty SLI/Ultra mobo and full tower Lian Li case.

Looking for a socket 775 mobo that can handle a Intel Xeon cpu, will be happy to pay shipping and a handling fee?

You can find a used 750ti for mere $50 anywhere. I sold mine few weeks ago for $55. Half Benny Franklin isn't that bad.

doesn't need to be free, but if anyone has an Asus dual wifi antenna they don't need, i'd be interested. Similar to this one. Two wire, not three.

Half a Ben Franklin isn't bad if you have one to begin with, which by buddy does not, hence why I asked here for him.

I'm gonna sit it on my kitchen table (wood) to test it again, just to make sure its not somehow shorting out, but I'm pretty sure it's dead now. Never had trouble at least getting power to it before and this time, after a few boot loops it died for good, will not power up at all.

I don't have an easy way to toss or recycle the board around here, so I'll keep your dibs in mind, kakureru

On the bright side, I have an iMac as my main "day-to-day" machine, so I still have ways of getting stuff done :) maybe it's a good thing in that it'll keep me from playing games for a bit :)

these sorts of things are a big gamble but yea.

I got an old AMD board from another user in this thread that was declared dead, and it ended up being dead caps on the CPU power regulation. I replaced the four caps on the power area and it started working again.

The board is still a bit unstable, I can make it predictably BSOD if I slam it with heavy network traffic, but it's otherwise mostly decent.

I had an old GA-EP45-DS3L which did the boot loop thing, and it turned out to be cosmic rays (I shit you not) that made it fail. It had dual BIOS chips and the backup BIOS had gotten corrupted. Basically whenever the board would check the secondary BIOS chip, the thing would instantly shut off and then enter a rapid boot loop until user intervention.

It took me three RMAs of Gigabyte telling me nothing was wrong and almost giving up on it, when I decided to flash the BIOS as a last ditch effort and pray it didn't shut off in the middle. I managed to dump both BIOS chips to disk beforehand and the re-flash succeeded, and the board started behaving properly again.

I did a comparison of the main and backup BIOS images in a hex editor and lo and behold, some bits in the backup bios had been mangled.

That sounds almost exactly like my issue, at least initially. Because the BIOS was all over the place. It's been unstable since the day I got it, and for a while the primary BIOS would always eventually corrupt and be overwritten by the backup BIOS. Changing a single setting in the BIOS would send it back to boot loops. Flashing both BIOS with a beta firmware sent to me by Gigabyte fixed the issue for a while. Lately the computer would just hard lockup, then go into boot loops on reboot. I'm assuming the motherboard is what's dead now and not any other components, but of course this board doesn't even have any diagnostics (no speaker, no lights, etc) so I can't really tell.

I'm hoping my CPU isn't also dead, but since only the mobo has given me issues in the past, I'm 99% sure the BIOS and backup BIOS got corrupted to the point of no return, and then the boot loops caused so many power cycles, that one power-regulating part or another finally went kaput as a result of the stress.

Apparently these issues are widespread with this particular board.

ICs are pretty resilient to power cycles. What it will kill though are hard drives, the reboot loop I had killed my hard drive dead.

The EEPROMs on these boards are usually little 8 pin SOIC chips using SPI to communicate. You can get a special jig to clip onto the BIOS chip:

And then use a USB flasher to reprogram it:

Yeah I'm giving up on the board at this point. Would rather have a working system than go to any length to repair the current one :p lol
Found a suitable replacement on Amazon that was relatively affordable

This also gives me a chance to use better thermal paste on my CPU, so all in all it will end up being a good thing

Looking for a goody batter for a 2008 Macbook Pro, should be compatible with model # A1175 as in the picture below. Also looking for a cheap SSD drive for same computer

They are less than $17 brand new on fleebay. Example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/261792656343

Gotta be careful with those cheap laptop battery replacements, they often use junk battery cells that have almost no capacity, or fail in short order.

If you're adventurous, you can rebuild the pack with quality cells, it takes a lot of patience though to make it look right. I've rebuilt a few battery packs myself and the end result is better than the cheap ones.

Anyone have a single 2gb or 4gb DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 200pin SODIMM laying around that they don't need?

Need a SIM CARD for a Note 5 I bought. Was thinking that someone here probably has one just laying around! anyone have this model of nano sim: # SIMOLW416C

I intend to use the phone with a online provider. If no one has it I will buy one for $10 on ebay but I figured I would ask first : ). I will give you the mailing fees if you have one that you don't need. You could even just send something as small as this in a normal envelope for the cost of a stamp : ). Thanks

go grab a freedompop account. (just make sure you read all the info, after the charge and you get it refunded, its a good backup phone)

go to Walmart and get a sim for $5 on whatever carrier.

I checked my 5 drawer horde of RAM and found 2 x 2GB PC3-8500 SODIMMs. I know they were tested with Memtest before I threw them in there a few years ago, but they've not been used since then.

Anyone have any 2GB / 4GB DDR3 SODIMMs to spare? Any speed would be fine (8500, 10600, 12800).
Need a couple to revive some old laptops for donation (trying to get them out the door with ~4GB each).

Already decked them out with new ODDs, HDDs, etc., just short on RAM.

Gave away a bunch of mobos a couple of weeks back :

BB has sims for 1$ from multiple carriers. Find a compatible one, and you're set.

Format _C: and GiGaBiTe : Muchos gracias!
Let me know where to send a PayPal gift :)

Just stick 'em in a regular envelope and send 'em USPS 1st class ($0.49).

Careful with the envelope thing. We had some issues last year when the 3D printed ornaments for [H]SS were mailed out (many envelopes arrived ripped and missing their contents - I don't know if they go through sorting machines or what).

Might be worth spending just a bit more to do a bubble mailer...just saying! :)
