I just picked up a Switch 2 weeks ago and I've been having a blast playing on the big screen playing games with my wife. She's not a gamer but we love Mario Kart, and honestly I have not played a Mario game since the N64 release.

I've watched a few videos and I'm excited for the new direction this game is taking- mainly a sandbox Mario game.

Anyone else excited?

Fairly excited. The it's the first real new Mario game since galaxies honestly. The variety of locations and number of additional game modes / mini games means this will be a must own title. Make sure to pre-order through Amazon prime for the discount as Nintendo AAA titles tend to hold their value forever.

Super Mario 3D World was a great Mario on the Wii U.

I agree. While the 2 Galaxy games are, in my opinion, the best 3D Mario games to date, Super Mario 3D World is a fantastic game. I've played through it probably 3 times in the years I've had it.

I ordered the Mario Switch bundle, should be arriving on Friday. Pretty excited to not only play it, but also to get my hands on the Switch itself.

It's a great game and I had fun with it, but it honestly didn't feel like a fresh game. It was solid - But it wasn't innovative like the first game, Mario 3, World, 64, and Galaxies were. It was basically just another 'new super mario bros' title but instead of being 2.5D was 3D, and it was largely pretty similar to the 3DS title before it. Also, I honestly had more fun with New Super Mario Bros U. That game had some really entertaining level designs.

It's nice to finally get an actually somewhat new/innovative mario game.

Got it pre-ordered on Amazon...didn't realize it was coming out so soon.

My copy is supposed to arrive "by 8Pm"... Guess I'll binge-watch Stranger Things tomorrow then

Pre-ordered digital copy and preloaded. Going all digital with the switch, so nice not having to mess with cartridges, especially on the go

Pre-ordered a physical copy, and should get here tomorrow. I likely won't get to play it until next week though due to work.

Grabbed mine at GameStop last night...so far it seems pretty awesome, feels like a spiritual sequel to Mario 64 and the controls immediately reminded me of that game. The hat mechanic actually feels pretty good. Only put in about an hour last night but so far very promising!

I will pick it up after work. My kids have been bugging me about this game for a month.

Says my copy was delivered, will check it out tonight...though I also have Wolf 2 to play, and Stranger Things S2 to watch...gah!

Found a bundle at Wally World this afternoon. Downloading it now. Praying it's good, lol... Otherwise the switch will sleep until Xenoblade 2.

The bass when you smash the blocks in retro mode is great in 5.1. Definitely a step up from 8bit nintendo.

Between Mario Zelda and that crazy Mario rabids cross game I'm so tempted to buy a switch lol.

IMO it's worth it just for Zelda and the new Mario alone. Both have quite a bit of replay/game time attached to them. Then you've got some big JRPG's coming out like Shin Megami Tensei 5 and Xenoblade 2.. It's a solid system to buy at this point even if Nintendo still can't figure out how to do online shit right.

Game is crazy adorable. You can almost slap a "Made by Pixar" label on it. Loving the seamless transitions from 3D to 2D and back. That's a brilliant mechanic. Even the music changes to 8-bit! :)

If I had to say something negative, just to offset all the praise, it feels like it's lacking a bit in depth. It's a lot of running around and collecting scattered power moons, then moving on to the next world and doing the same. Coming from Zelda this feels like a greatly simplified game. Though I realize that Mario was never a complex game to begin with. So it's not really a complaint, just more of an observation.

At any rate, looking forward to playing more.

I have three issues with the game. First I said in the switch thread that it is slow. I didn't check it against the galaxy games but compared to mario 64 mario is far slower, doesn't jump as far, etc. I hate that they are slowing down some of their games(mario kart is slow as hell unless it is on 200cc which was added on and has bad controls). Second is that I think it has too much in it. The moons are too plentiful. I prefer the limited numbers of stars(or whatever the game has) that other games had. Last is the motion controls which are needed for a few moves. Really wish they didn't do that.

That being said so far it is a good game. Kinda interesting how they made some of the costumes work in the 2d mode but not others. I do think the cap controlling animals thing is a little overplayed but the game is fun so it isn't a big deal.

I did notice something. Your ship will only load power moons from the area you are in. Only time this should come into play is when you use the picture frame warps between worlds. If you use one to travel to a world to collect a power moon you either need to go to your ship in that world or go back to it and add it to your ship there. So like on sand where you travel to it from the flower world you can just jump down and go to your ship to drop off the power moon and warp back up to the check point to go back to the flower world.

Played a bit tonight...pretty fun so far. Reminds me of Mario 64, though I think the maps in this one might even be bigger.

I agree about the motion controls...not really a fan that some of the actions you HAVE to use them. I don't really like the tiny thumbsticks on the Joy-Cons so I tend to use the Pro controller when I can. But some of the abilities you have to shake the controllers in a certain way...I wonder if you can do it with the Pro controller somehow?

Not sure how you would play this handheld though. I guess you just don't get to do the motion actions, which honestly it seems as though they aren't required, just nice to have.

The shaking actions work the same with the pro controller, or the joycons just the same. Works perfectly fine in handheld mode as well.

And yes - For a platformer this game is absolutely massive, and I feel really captures the best of every Nintendo platformer to date.

I can't really speak to the portable mode, I don't play the switch in it. If they ever actually bring the virtual console to it though I could see trying. I bought a pro controller with the switch and after trying the joycons I'm glad I did. I don't think I'd want to swing the switch in my hands like I do with the pro controller to get some of the moves to register though. I'd be much happier if all of the controls had button combos.

I think if I used my switch in public I'd hate the motion controls more though. I don't want to be swinging it around like an idiot in a public space. With the portable aspect of the system I think that it makes the mistake of making some things motion only even worst.

I will say I don't know if it is my pro controller, my amiibo, or if they just suck in general but it can be a pain to get it to scan. I got bored and went and grabbed a link one(amiibo) from gamestop to try with this game for the hints to see how it works.

I also didn't mention it earlier but I do really enjoy the over the top music in some of the levels. Makes it feel like an epic journey.

Good to know, I was wondering how some of the actions that require you to shake one or both specifically would work with the Pro controller. I'll give it a try soon.
