iPhone's new calculator behaves bizarrely and gives out results previously thought impossible using normal math. Apparently, the strange animations that have been added to iOS 11 are responsible: the operator buttons have an animation on them, and they don't register inputs while the animation is running. The animation is pretty long, so it's quite easy to tap an operator, tap a number, then tap the operator again and have your input be missed.

Like seemingly all other 'bugs' 'fails' and 'issues' that get posted about iPhones, I don't seem to have this issue.

I use the calculator app quite a bit and have not seen any 'bad maths' that weren't a result of my own fat fingers.

*EDIT*

OK, I just tried typing it really fast, yes, the + sign seems to lag between the 2 + 3 cadence making you enter 1 + 23.

Actually, this isn't even a 'lag', all the operators are effectively toggles so that you know visually what will happen on the next numeric input.

I've had weird results come from a few different handheld calculators, but never on a phone. Stupid animations causing input to be missed is retarded though.

One example was a TI-83. I was just messing around with it entering a bunch of different stuff and verifying the results every once in a while. Then at one point it spit out an obviously wrong answer. Went back and checked it multiple times and, yeah, the multiplication result was incorrect.

This explains some weird typos I have encountered lately with this.

Stupid fucking animations. What kind of idiot thought this made sense.

It doesn't even take effort to 'do it too fast'. I was able to get it in one go at what I consider a normal pace.

The operators do seem to work as toggles but the fade out animation takes too long. It doesn't even make sense from a usability standpoint. Everyone knows how a calculator works, we don't need any more fancy visual cues.

So what you are saying is that we are "doing it wrong". Thanks Steve.

No one cares for quality control anymore......Apple, Samsung, Google, they all suck......greed is seriously taking over the business world to the extent that its all about the new product but not the quality of product.

I tried typing it in at a deliberately slow pace, same result. My phone claims 1+2+3 = 24

Add in the car manufacturers who put form over function... and car entertainment systems suffer because of it.

Uggghhh.. first time I even tried the calculator since updating. Have to wait at least 1 second between each button or it screws up. Who thought this was a good idea?

The animation lag is annoying - yes. But that isn't nearly the same thing as not performing math correctly, which is a much bigger issue.

This isn't a bug or a lapse in QC. It's an intentional design feature. Just as the QWERTY layout was (supposedly) designed to slow down the typist so the typewriter could keep up without jamming, so must iOS slow down the user so the iPhone can keep up. :D

This is one of those sad consequences you get when you put form over function.

Is this really a big deal? Like people who use iPhones will even notice the difference?

I have an iPhone 6... Only using it because the piece of crap LG I had completely died a month or so out of warranty.

I do use the calculator occasionally and this animation crap has made it completely unusable.

And the real kicker is that there is no way to turn the animation off.

PCalc is pretty much superior. Give it a try.

actually this calculator is so revolutionary that it is now using common core maths to "properly" calculate and of course it can only be found on apple products your leading technology provider.

Turn off the bleeping animations. This is the real world, not bleeping LCARS.
While I agree, having people code and test the applications so they actually work would be a better solution. So what type of testing is even done on all this junk? Probably none.

I don’t have kids but from what I can gather on common core math, you’re still wrong, lol.

1+1+1+3 = 6 is wrong but 3+1+1+1=6 is correct. Common core math teaches you that thinking properly is wrong and correcting yourself is also wrong because being wrong is simulatenously inaccurate and not right. It simply makes no sense.

Therefore we can conclude that Calculator on iOS 11 = Zebra, not horse, and at the end of the day it’s all correct because giraffe.

Nothing is wrong. That is the new Common Core math they are teaching in public school.

I think people are downplaying this too much by making jokes. This is a ground zero fuckup which shows Apple can’t even get a 10 year old calculator app to work correctly. This is included on every damn iPhone and it’s fucking busted.
