Tesla is talking with the Shanghai municipal government to set up a factory in the region and expects to agree on a plan by the end of the year. China’s government has considered allowing foreign automakers to set up wholly owned factories in free trade zones in part to encourage more production of electric and hybrid vehicles. Tesla would still have to pay a 25 percent duty on cars built in a free trade zone, but it could lower its production costs.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Tesla and the Shanghai government have already reached a deal in that city’s free trade zone. Shanghai is China’s de facto automotive capital and a significant market for luxury vehicles of all kinds. Chinese internet company Tencent Holdings has a five percent stake in Tesla and is seen as a potential ally for Tesla’s efforts to enter the Chinese market.

Well, there goes my desires for owning a Tesla.

I don't have a problem with imports. One of my favorite all time cars is a Nissan R34. I just do not feel comfortable with Chinese quality overall based on my experiences, and what my company has had to endure with stuff coming out of there. The idea of a car made in China just doesn't sit well with me at all.

Volvo, a Chinese owned company, has factories making cars in China.

Volvo has a factory in South Carolina that's built. It will will start producing the S60 by fall 2018 they say. And by 2021 they plan to be producing XC60 at South Carolina plant.

When you go to the dealer today, you might as well check and see where it's coming from. Sweden or China.

The Chinese plant is generally only building Volvo's for the Chinese/SE Asia market. As far as i'm aware none of them are sold in the US or European markets.

S60's and XC60's typically destined for the US market are built in Belgium, but otherwise everything else in the US market is coming from Sweden besides the transmission which is Japanese.

This is BS. All, and i mean all subsides should be withheld. If his company is in good enough shape to do this then he does not need taxpayers dollars. If not then F'em let him fail.

Yuuge Mistake.
Theorizing that selling Tesla to Chinese Government may be the best exit strategy for Musk. If Model 3 production doesn't get it together soon, there may be no recovery from that.

Establishing a Partner entity in China might be a necessary step before that. Or at least ease the sale.

Not sure where you live, but the cars built in China will be sold in China.

Oh and BTW, that BMW you are driving isn't built in Germany.

Had a thought on this, "In other news. . . .Samsung in talks with Chinese government to build electric cars soon". LOL

American Teslas will be built in America, Chinese Teslas are gonna be built in China, what's so hard to understand about this?

I doubt many people boycott Walmart for actually doing what you describe, but we'll penalize the most "American" car company for expanding elsewhere, ironic.

Maybe if Koch brothers started throwing wads of cash toward dissing Walmart as well then that will change, simple minds need such guidance.

I know, I don't buy anything from China, so I am homeless, carless and naked dictating this to a friend.

Telsa...made in China assembled in America...coming to a Telsa near you!

Volvo has found this out the hard way. https://www.media.volvocars.com/glo...ction-in-china-and-unveils-new-china-strategy
No wait..

So it is possible.

Only if you import it from China in pieces, not sure why you would want to do that though, the Chinese standard connector wouldn't work here.

Yes they already have their charging standard sorted out, EVs are kinda a big deal there, over 40 percent of EVs sold on the planet are in China now.

This news is no surprise, all car companies are working on entering that market because it's the future for vehicle sales:

I would hope not, considering mine was made in Ontario. But I guess you and I spell Ford differently.

Uncertain what the Koch brothers have anything to do with this, so I'm going to consider that an unrelated comment. I made it pretty evident what my stance was and what it was based on. First hand experience is a hell of a teacher. Secondly, if both the American and Chinese Teslas are going to be built in China, where are the parts themselves being sourced? The same suppliers, or something local to their respective countries? And will there be any interchange between the two? If so, what will be interchanged?

Unknowingly buying lead-filled dog food at Wal-Mart, while horrific, isn't on the same level as putting your trust in a vehicle that is supposed to protect you in the event things go south very fast. The former can kill your dog but you can switch to a different brand if it doesn't. The latter ensures you won't be coming home to see your dog if it fails due to corner cutting.

Please take my words out of context a bit harder, why don't you? Or try actually reading my post to begin with before responding with exaggerated tripe?

Owning a brand and giving it direction != manufacturing. A hobo with a spoon stuck in his ear could potentially turn a down-in-the-dumps company into the comeback king. That doesn't mean whatever the company makes is made by hobos.

But they are made by the Chinese and they aren't junk. So it is possible.

Most of that probably answered here. Tesla is between 75% and 100% American depending on measurement, the highest of any other car company.
