Ok, A coworker gave me a HDD to try to recover his mp3 collection from. I have succeeded. However, all the files are named based fil<xxxxx>.mp3. Is there a software program that can analyze the audio, compare to a database and rename the files? Metadata would be useful too, but not required.

Tag & Rename would be what I'd suggest, if they all have actual mp3 tags (aka metadata) done properly. That program can easily pull the tag info and rename the files with a click or two, literally, and I've been using it for years to handle all my tagging and renaming (as the program name suggests) without any issues.

If the files are not properly tagged (I would use Tag & Rename first to see if it can be useful) then you can consider using Musicbrainz Picard which can do exactly what you're suggesting which is an actual analysis of the mp3 data content (the actual audio bitstream) and "decode" and identify it. Takes longer, of course, but it can get the job done.

I would strongly suggest using Tag & Rename first as stated since that works with the tag info that most if not all of those mp3 files will have stored inside them (unaffected by the recovery operation assuming the data recovery was actually successful) and save you a great deal of time, especially on very large collections of audio files.

Musicbrainz did not seem to help much. The results had all kinds of weird entries. I resorted to playing the song and having the google voice search find the song. I'd then manually change the filename. Tag & Rename did accelerate entry of the other info. So, task completed thanks for the suggestions.
