HP Omen 32" QHD Monitor - 2560x1440, 5ms, 75Hz freesync, VA panel

I tried fast sync with my 980ti and the Omen and still got the frame skipping at 75hz.

Ultimately I ended up selling the monitor due to the input lag and the fact I couldn't run a full 75hz.

I had forgotten my Vesa plate at home and the guy didn't want it. So for anyone looking for a Vesa mount, let me know.

haha I only said use fast-sync at 60hz to the other guy because he was already using v-sync, except fast sync removes tearing WITHOUT adding input lag. He was getting the double whammy.

If anyone needs a vesa mount for the Omen I have an extra one I can let go for 20 shipped to the 48. Thanks

I bought a HP Omen 32 last week and I noticed some banding while panning in games. It's only noticeable on light backgrounds with higher brightness settings. Is banding common with the Omen?

I haven't noticed this. Can you take a screenshot or make a short video of it?

Have you checked that your desktop colour setting is set to 32-bit?

Yes, both my PC and Mac Mini (late 2012) are on 32-bit. Both have a bit of gradient banding after calibration. Only my PC (Nvidia GF770 card, Windows 10) shows no gradient banding before calibration. That seems to me a videocard/calibration thing as my PC didn't show banding before calibration.

The banding mentioned in my first post is similar to the vertical banding in this video;

It looks like a frame behind the screen, visible through the screen.

Has anyone else seen this issue: After PC signal is gone (hibernate, shutdown, sleep, etc.) the screen starts to show green and pink lines on all of the display. Also doesn't respond to power button when this happens. Once PC wakes the lines go away and it's fine.

I'm using a display port cable because HDMI sucks on full range contrast.

If it's vertical banding, then there can be a bit of that with these monitors. Usually, I think it's only noticeable on grey backgrounds. I haven't noticed any in colourful situations.

I haven't witnessed that. Did your monitor always do that, or did it develop that behaviour?

Have not had this issue right away, I only started seeing it about a month ago now.

The Omen 32 monitors come with a 1-year warranty from HP. If you think it's a growing problem, you might want to make use of the warranty while you can.

To me, an issue like what you described sounds sort of like a failing capacitor. Those can be replaced easily, if you know what to look for, and are comfortable with soldering. Even replacing all of the capacitors in the monitor would likely cost less than $5 for the capacitors, providing you already have a soldering gun.

But, I'm only guessing about it being a capacitor, and using the warranty would be a sure fix.

Ah, I've never been a warranty guy due to the hassle. Hoping it won't die anytime soon, else I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

Just had this delivered as a refurb. Can someone explain to me why there is no option to use 4k resolution? It gives me this crappy option to do 2715 x 1527 but everything looks ultra blurry. I'm using display port (from my 1080TI) to HDMI as they did not provide a display port cable in the box. I'm hoping that's not the issue but it probably is.

Maybe because it isn't a 4K monitor?

My mistake. My question is, why can't I set it to the native resolution -
2560x1440?
Something with your setup or drivers

I've used the hp Omen 32 with four different 1080ti at 2560x1440 without that issue

Check your refresh rate, (make sure it's 60hz, download the hp Omen 32 windows drivers, and or buy a different cable. Chances are it's not the monitor. Can you try a different pc or laptop to rule out the display?

Yeah, it was a stupid cable. Never trust those cheap DisplayPort to HDMI adapters you get on amazon. I used an old HDMI cable and it worked fine.

Anyone else in this thread have RX Vega. Mostly freesync is broken so far with RX Vega on my Omen monitors. I’ve tried three different Vega and I have three Omen. I can’t figure this out, but it’s quite clear it isn’t working. I’ve tried reinstalling windows 10. Some driver revisions freesync has worked on one display, but not ever on all three to my knowledge. But the current driver x.10.1 doesnt even freesync on even a single display.

Tearing and stuttering galore.

I have the HP Omen 32 driver installed and set to 75hz and freesync mode. The monitor is in gaming freesync mode and the little banner AMD freesync on pops up in the left corner as you’d expect.

Here you got a quick view of what it looks like the panel on black. Is this normal? Set: Dark room and brightness to 30.

Prettty normal for a VA panel. It’s better than IPS glow though.

Have you contacted AMD about it? I'm thinking about buying a Navi GPU when they're available, and to use with my Omen 32. But, I want it to be reliable, otherwise I'm likely to start thinking about ditching the Omen 32 and getting a G-sync monitor.

No Vegas drivers were so buggy that was one pebble on the mountain. I sold the Vegas in disgust. I’m using a problem free 1080ti. Freesync truly I s fantastic when it works (about 1/3 of the time since launch with Vega or 100% off the time with my former Fury X), but the hope of it working is not worth regular system lockup’s when doing nothing but browsing the web, regular game crashes, 8fps dips in games where you are otherwise getting 90fps, lack of bezel correction(crashes if you try to use it), monitor signal turn off bugs, chrome browser screwiness/lockup’s.... hmm what else.

Frankly Vegas driver state is atrocious with multiminotor setups right now. I couldn’t even cryptomine with them with nicehash because they lock up so often with the available drivers. My RX580s have NEVER locked up to date while crypto mining.

I am one of 4 close friends in my local PC gaming group that bought Vega. It’s no small wonder that we all have sold, or are in process of selling our Vegas. All of us have experienced many frustrations with our launch Vegas. I can’t even remember how many “Vega is crap” type txts I randomly got from my friends as we’ve tried to work through these issues on our machines. Says something I think. I’ve nearly washed my hands of them - just one card left to sell. AMD will surely fix these driver issues. But I won’t own the cards when they do and AMD has eliminated entirely any loyalty or good will I had towards them after my truly stellar experience with my pair of Fury X in Crossfire for gaming on the three Omen HP. I wish I’d kept my pair of Fury X and never touched the Vegas.

That sucks. Are you looking at getting a G-sync monitor? Any 32" monitors in particular you would get for g-sync?

id like gsync but haven’t seen any model that piques my interest over what I have.

I think I have to wait for q1 or q2 of next year. In my opinion, the Omen price and value represent about the best monitor deal out there and it’s quality is on par with any of the top tier monitors. So trading out now seems very much a lateral at great expense. First half of next year should introduce gsync 2 type features hopefully. HDR, Quantum dots, Dolby Vision maybe. Basically higher contrast and better colors is my expectation. That’s what lll make me jump monitors. For now I’m holding tight to the Omens. They are still a great monitor IMO.

Assuming you have an AMD card is this monitor still a good buy if you can pick it up on sale? I currently have a 24" 144hz 1080p TN non-freesync and while it's decent enough I do notice that the colors aren't exactly vibrant and the black level is pretty bad.

The Omen is a very good monitor, dare I say great monitor, at a very reasonable price. Yes - I believe you'll really appreciate the difference coming from a 24" TN panel.

Thanks. Microcenter currently has them for $380 but I might wait and see if they drop a little more during Black Friday and Xmas sales.

So, to be clear, you think that the issues you explain having with FreeSync not working are entirely due to the drivers, and not due to any of the Omen 32 monitors malfunctioning?

I have Vega 56 (by Sapphire). Freesync works absolutely fine with my Omen 32" monitor. It's all the same in terms of image quality as my previous R9 390 card, except that in most games I hit 75+ fps all the time. ;)

It would be hard to imagine that AMD would have failed one of the most important feature of Vega. Anyway, potential differencies could be: I'm using Windows 7 x64, did not install any HP monitor drivers, one Omen 32 display connected via DisplayPort. Ryzen R5 1600 on Asus B350 Prime Plus.

You testing with the windmill demo?

sabrewolf732 stated he’s figured out freesync breaks on Vega if you have more than one display connected. I didn’t troubleshoot that factor my myself, and the only Vega I have left is going back for RMA.

But, I’m not the only one with a vega where freesymc doesn’t work. There was some discussion about it in the Vega owners thread. And yes.... it is hard to imagine.

Have you posted your issue on the AMD feedback forums?

No, I didn't. However after ~10 months with this monitor I believe I will immediately notice tearing when it happens. It's quite easy to setup situation in common titles such as 3dmark firestrike or GTA5 where FPS drops down to freesync range and if freesync would not work the tearing would be immediately visible. I'm now replaying GTA5 with vsync on and with my settings it's quite stable 60-75 fps (only exception when it rains in-game). All I can say that its butter smooth gaming experience.

Anyway, if the issue is with multiple displays, I would be quite optimistic that it can be fixed with driver updates (at least if all displays are identical) and should be high priority on AMD's list. Three screen setups are quite common with racing / flight simulator gamers.

no - coupled with all the other AMD Vega problems I experienced, I just rid myself of the scab. As a day one adopter of Vega, I have a REALLY bad taste in my mouth in regards to the lineup. I'm just done with them. There were so many bugs and issues it was like I was beta testing with a product not near ready for public release - so poor an experience I shouldn't have even been beta testing them in that state. They couldn't reliably mine with nicehash, they couldn't reliably play games, they couldn't reliably perform even at the desktop. My computer crashed regulary - just junk. I'm back to my Nvidia cards and I've had no lockups since the switch back. I'm not going to support AMD for that type of nonsense. By comparison - I adored my Fury X and had a near perfect experience with them in Crossfire. I was excited for Vega!

In my for sale thread I detailed out some of the issues.
https://hardforum.com/threads/fs-three-rx-vegas-fair-prices.1946097/

I'm not trying to pollinate my dissatisfaction everywhere. I'm sure AMD will get the drivers ready for primetime. But they surely aren't there now.

Though in reality - I could easily tell it was NOT working in my games too - so if you can tell it is working -- then you're probably fine. It occasionally worked with the different driver versions that came out. It was not reliable driver to driver and the last two - including 17.10.2 didn't work for me.

Edit: Started reading more into it and saw that it is a pretty common thing and that the color/contrast shift is just a thing with these. Not THAT big of a deal but definitely something noticeable in dimly lit areas/darker games. Distracting to say the least.

I don't remember on VA panels doing this...is this just a Omen 32 thing?

OG comment:

So I don't know if this has been asked yet but does anyone else have an issue where there's a dark "area" right in the center when looking at it straight on?

Like, I'm playing Wolfenstein 2 and can't help but notice that in dark scenes when I look at the monitor from a left or right angle the center of the screen becomes much more bright and the little details lost in the shadows are visible.

Is this black crush that I've always heard about? Can I do something to help it?

It's weird too...I can see this dark area move around the screen with my line of sight.

Looks like this thing is $250 at Costco for Black Friday this year, is it worth it? Thinking about getting it as a secondary monitor for more screen real estate. Currently on a Dell U2711, mostly browsing, coding, and the occasional gaming. I'm pretty out of touch with tech these days

Yes. It’s a very nice display. Even at or above MSRP.

Cool, I figure I can always return it if I don't like it with Costco's awesome policy. I'm looking at buying a RX 580 to pair it with from this deal. $223 before rebate with tax and using MasterPass + gift cards from Groupon, hopefully it's worth

Edit: Looks like there's a MSI card for $10 cheaper and no rebate that I'll probably go for instead
Edit 2: Sadly missed out on the MSI because my vouchers took too long to process, went with the Powercolor

I've been trying to hold out for the real HDR monitors (preferably in ultrawide) to release but if the Omen goes on sale online for under $300 I'll pick one up as a stop gap.
