In addition to announcing an updated Blade Stealth Ultrabook with 8th-generation Intel Coffee Lake processors, Razer revealed a new version of its external graphics dock: the Razer Core V2 allows gamers to seamlessly transform highly mobile Thunderbolt 3 laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth into a desktop-class gaming experience. A single Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) connection is all it takes to connect a laptop with the graphics enclosure.

It now features the world’s first dual Thunderbolt 3 internal controller design that separates lanes for both graphics and connected devices, ensuring fluid gameplay. The external graphics enclosure comes with four USB 3.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet for connecting a wide array of peripherals. Sporting a redesigned internal layout that fits an expanded range of taller graphics cards, it now supports the most popular gaming graphics cards, including NVIDIA GeForce 10 series and AMD Radeon 500 series with XConnect technology.

Didn't the dock have pretty bad performance? You'd get the performance of a 1070 if you put a 1080 in the dock. Something to that degree.

Either way, that is a serious blow to one's pocketbook. $500 just to use a video card. I mean, it is a nice feature, but then you still have to buy the card, too. Well over $1000 after tax for a 1080 or such. Count me still VERY safely in the desktop camp...

Admittedly, the market for this is rather niche, at least at the moment. I always seem to be an odd case. I want a single machine to take with me, to do highly efficient work on the road, and to play games at home. And, I'd be willing to pay something of a premium for that capability. But so much of a premium that I could do the job with just one adjustment, having a second machine? Maayyyybe not.

Although I despise Razer, it is good to see that the external GPU box is finally smaller than a compact mITX system.
7.79L is pretty compact.

This cool and all but wtf does it have to cost so much. $200 is a little high but would be more reasonable.

razer overcharges for everything. Because it's a gaming whatever. The components to make the dock don't cost more than 100$, there's people who have built it themselves with 30$ connectors and an extra power supply that was lying around.

I think EVGA makes a $250 part that does the same thing... or was it XFX? I forget. They are out there. I almost bought one for a mobile laptop rig... but it is definitely expensive.

Interesting that the hit would be that bad.

Back in ~2010 I used a ViDock with my work laptop via an Expresscard slot when I was on the road.

Expresscard was only Gen1 PCIe 1x IF I recall, and the performance hit was only in the single digits for me.

Granted, I was using a Radeon 7850, so maybe it is to be expected that the lower performing cards of the day would have had lesser performance impact than modern ones, but still.

It was a quite neat solution for travel. I had an SSD with a second sell hard drive door cover, popped out the hard drive with the work image and popped in the SSD and booted to my gaming install with the ViDock, and plugged it in to hotel room TV's using HDMI.

It was a nice way to fight off the boredom of evenings during work travel.
