I honestly did not even know this was a thing till cageymaru pointed me to it, but it seems as though Microsoft has been talking at Sony a long time about getting cross-play enabled with XBone and PS4. Quite frankly, I doubt this would ever happen as Sony does not seem like the type of company that would want to give Microsoft any better edge even at the cost of giving itself one. Then again, I am not sure the console peasants even want this. Let them eat cake. The link goes to Gamepsot, so expect autostart video and popups.

Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has provided an update on where things stand with Sony. He told us at the Brazil Game Show today that Microsoft speaks with Sony all the time, but the conversations haven't amounted to anything--and they may never.

"We talk to Sony all the time. With Minecraft on PlayStation, we have to be one of the biggest games on their platform in terms of sales and gameplay," Spencer said. "Same with Nintendo. The relationship with Nintendo on this front has been strong. They've been great supporters and we continue to collaborate with them. But I think Sony's view is different. They should talk about what their view is..."

Go home Microsoft, you're drunk.

Maybe if there was a big enough outcry for this when it mattered as in before either consoles launched it would have already happened. But at the time i remember a extremely cocky microsoft that was too busy shooting themselves in the foot to even consider such a thing.

Also wtf are these tags lmao.

I've been waiting for console cross-play for a long frickin time but these assholes cant get their heads out of their asses. Just do it already! It'll make it more enjoyable for all!

It might take a 55 gallon drum of lube to make that happen...

I'm sure if Sony found themselves in 2nd or 3rd place, they'd change their tune quick. Same with MS, tbh.
Which happened already. Back during the 360/ps3 era Sony was open to cross play but MS wasn't. It is why ffxiv was not released on a MS console.

Considering that there seem to actually be more games allowing crossplay between PS4 and PC than XB1 and PC, I wonder if the problem isn't in the list of conditions Microsoft has, rather than in Sony's, especially when it comes to a Microsoft-owned and run service like Minecraft.
Probably has to do with Microsoft having a history of being reluctant to work with valve/steam https://gamerant.com/microsoft-rejected-portal-2-steam-cross-platform-seb-76410/ only recently does that seem to be changing.

This console peasant has been calling for this since PS2. My kids and many of their friends have been wishing for cross-play since they started playing PS4/XB1 as those are their platforms of choice. It's stupid when you have game developers stating they can enable cross-play in many of their offerings and it's truly the fault of the hardware/portal owners for not allowing it!

The PS4 has the edge this generation, right?

This means there is no incentive to do crossplay with Microsoft. Sony is selling more units, so if you are a console gamer, you likely have more friends who have PS4's than who have Xbox One's, and Sony wants you to be forced to buy a PS4 if you want to play games with them. They ahve the leverage to make you buy their system, and have no incentive what so ever to change that.

Makes perfect sense.

I wonder if this just has to do with - volume wise - PC's not being seen as a real threat by Sony.

We all know that the "death of the PC" crap is bullshit, volume wise, there is still a MUCH larger "install base" of consoles than gaming PC's.

It was Final Fantasy XI, and there was an Xbox 360 version. I know because I had it. Even got the San d'Oria achievements. Microsoft made an exception for it at the time. If Square Enix still says it's Microsoft holding FFXIV back from a release on the ONE, maybe that will change now that Microsoft is saying they want cross platform to happen. That will put the ball back in Sony's court.
Microsoft is playing the good guys here but don't be fooled. When they were selling more units they acted the same way as Sony.

"Microsoft won't let Sony players play against them"

And Microsoft saying no to platform play between 360 and Steam ...

The Xbox leadership is completely different now than it was then. I don't think market position tells the whole story.

To some degree I would agree. Microsoft has embraced Windows again for gaming. Their gaming division did not do that during 360 era. But when Sony says they want to control the experience so that's why they won't allow online cross play ... it sounds exactly like a Microsoft comment during 360 era and people still ate it up.

lets get all 100% crossplay with PC. Please, I want easy kills :)

Irrelevant, but love it:

shame, i dont think itss sony to blame for it all there must be something that they arnt happy about.

my kids love mine craft cross play would be blessing for me as we own all 3 consoles minecraft split screen means the the tv is more or less taken up all weekend

It the consoles can't get cross-play (stupid, but I get the incentives at work), at least let them have cross-save for games like Destiny. Of course, that might require dropping console exclusive content, so...

If I am not mistaken, isn't Rocket League cross-play across all consoles except PS4? I believe PC, XB1 and Switch players can all play together online.

Fornite had cross play between the Xbox One and PS4 for like a few hours before being disabled. It was the talk of the net for a while since it seems to be an easy thing to do.

Its important for kids who rely on their parents to hook them up with an xbox or a playstation.........my son has a friend who's on PS4, most of the other kids are on Xbox One because the 360 was dominant, it would be nice if the systems played nice togther for multiplayer, is all. Probably time to switch them to masterrace mode regardless....."son, this is a gpu, let me show you how to install it, like your father did, and his fathers before him could only dream about. First, you flip a dip switch to enable the correct IRQ so it doesn't try to send sound to the parallel port, where your printer is....then......you will download many patches....next.."

"Dip switch? Mom. Dad used a cussword! Besides, what an 'irq'?"
"Okay, go back to your console"
