After 10 Years, I’ve Finally Accepted That “Half-Life” Is Dead

Half Life 3 = Something Like Duke Nukem Forever. If it does ever get released there's no way that people will be happy with it. It's just been too long. Let's let it go.

These days, I'm more glad than ever that I never really liked Half-Life 2 or its episodes.
I did like HL1 a lot in its day, but it quickly got overshadowed.

First of all ... no, Half life is not dead. It's too valuable of an IP. Why would anyone turn down hundreds of millions of dollars in profit? The answer? No one.

If I had to guess one of the top 3 video game IP's in video game history ... from the very beginning of time, Half-Life would be in that top 3.

You guys are feeding off your own BS, running around in circles, planting seeds of self-doubt, so on and so forth. It's going to happen sooner or later. It might be 1 year, 5 years, 10 years. But it will happen.

Leave it alone and just let it happen.

As I've said before many times...

There is absolutely no reason why Valve would ever release another Half-Life game. The only good outcome for them is it wins a load of awards but who cares about those... a business doesn't.
It wouldn't make as much money for them as the devs making a PUBG or Overwatch clone instead and quite frankly it will never live up to the hype. Sure it might be a great game that a lot of people love but
it'll never please the majority of HL fans.

I'd love them to finish the story though as a movie or TV show. I'm sure Netflix could do a half decent job of it.

Get your pitchforks ready boys...

I don't care about HL3. Didn't really like the first one, could care less about the second one. Hated listening to years of bitching about the missing third one. If people eventually stop talking about it altogether, good riddance.

The only time I get irate at fucking valve for not finishing a fucking story that story being HL2:ep3 is when there’s a thread about it. Otherwise I’m too busy living life to care. But yes, Gabe Newell is a fat fuck who gives not a shit in a the world about the die hard fans that love HL.

From another [H] thread...

i try to forget about it.
kinda sad how we supported hl-hl2 and steam when it first came out, yet they never could deliver hl3 to us.
weve supported valve through all these years in hopes of a new game, but nope. its almost like giving your all to your job in hopes of a nice bonus at the end of the year, only to have it end up in someone elses pocket.

there must be a whole new generation of people at valve by now, the original feelings and emotions for a new one will ve vastly different anyways and probably not even good at alll.
i gave up a while back.. its really pathetic.

I just re-installed half life 2 and replaying it... i am getting 300 FPS and it supports 4k rez... plays great....

There was an interesting thread a while ago where we discussed what the hell Valve would have to come up with to not bomb with HL3.

Personally, I was pretty sure it would be released when there was talk of the steambox and early VR. Surprised they didn't jumped on that opportunity. After that, I too have let it go.

Now it seriously seems impossible to make a HL3 that would shut everyone up.

A HL3/Steambox combo would have been a goldmine.

Valve as a game developer is dead.

This MIGHT not be true.

I agree that Valve will never release another sequel to their existing franchises. There's just not enough leadership to push through such a thing, when most of what they want to do has already been done in the previous games.

But I could see them releasing something completely new. If they find a concept as unique as Portal, then that might drive them to release a game or two based on it.

Probably.

I'd personally be happy with a story that was as good as the existing ones, and a little wrap-up of exposed plot holes.

That was actually a pretty crummy story, I thought. YMMV.

He created the Half-Life story so that's basically how it would've ended if we had gotten a HL3. Story is dead and over as far as I am concerned.

Ferrari Syndrome. They got too rich, don't give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Yeah it's pretty crappy that they take a franchise that basically mad them who they are and gave them the resources and community acceptance to make Steam, and even tho they are now a billion dollar company with resources to make the game 20x over they ultimately don't care enough about their fans, true fans, to put a sincere effort into HL3.

Instead leaving the story in it's lowest point cliffhanger. This is the legacy your fans deserve? FU valve....

I'll never really understand people who, by this point and seeing the trends in gaming, legitimately want another episode/game. It almost never works out for the best in regards to the series if they try to keep the story going. (Dead Space, Mass Effect, FF10, FF13, Assassins Creed, debatably Fallout and Diablo)

Sometimes it does but that's pretty damn rare.

I bought both HL1 and HL2 when they first came out. Loved both of them. Played through both EPs 1 and 2, loved them too. At this point I'm hoping they never release anything to besmirch the games.

End on a high note, always leave them wanting more.

For many, a high note doesn't mean unresolved story. And one thing about several of the above games is that rather than being left in limbo, they're milked to death. I think Nintendo overall has the best approach for their main franchises. One game every 3-4 years. You don't burn people out with a yearly edition of a game (or update in the case of something like Diablo), but you do keep it in public consciousness so it doesn't become a forgotten franchise. Allow people to move on from a game, and just when they're starting to miss it, bring about a sequel.

Another viewpoint to consider: We Mass Effect fans waited impatiently and intensely for the follow-up to the trilogy only to be traumatized by the wretched dreck that was Andromeda. Might be better off just wishing for HL3 than getting it.

As Mr. Spock once said, "After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true."

Screw half life 3. I want a new Descent Freespace.

Oh? I have something pretty damn close .... loved it and after you beat the game it unlocks an even harder zone as a reward. Trust me, you will love this game.

GabeN is still emotionally scared from the "cake if a lie" fiasco of Portal. Nobody talks about cake that way in his house!

Disney will buy it and we'll be at HL 17 within 5 years.

If that was true i'm pretty sure they would have made Duck Tales 3 instead of a reimagined Duck Tales 1. Reboots are all the rage these days.

I wonder if Gabe stepped down as CEO if the other people in charge would fast track HL3...I think a lot of people at Valve must want to see HL3 get made...

It's also entirely possibly that they are working on a VR version of Half Life and simply waiting for prices to drop and VR hardware to become more powerful. You never really know.

While I want that to be true, I feel it's more like Stockholme syndrome.

Valve is definitely at the opposite end of the IP spectrum. You have Disney, milking it for all it is worth, and then there is Valve with valuable IP that they can print money with, but doing fuck-all with it. Gotta be in the middle somewhere.

Another IP they own that seems would be an easy money maker would be left for dead. I don't understand why they didn't put out another one.

It was a business decision because they were making better money elsewhere. Kind of like how the success of World of Warcraft slowed down Blizzard's progress on developing other games on their slate. The most profitable business go where the money is.
