The free limited time demo for Gran Turismo Sport is available for all starting October 9 and will conclude on October 12. Coming at a whopping 43GB, all progressed made within the demo will carry over to the full release when it comes out October 17. Three racing modes are available to try it out including Sport, Campaign, and Arcade. Also available is Scapes, which is the photo mode and Livery Editor allowing players to customize their cars.

Stupid, sexy cars.

Wonder how good the game is and if the'll add cars. These racing games are now trying for that whole realistic graphics, which is cutting into how many cars come with the base game. I think the last Gran Turismo had 1000 cars, while this new one is like 200. Of course, some of those 1000 cars are the same with different livery.

If ever there were an argument against ISP data caps, it's living in an era where a DEMO is 43GB. 1 minute of 4k video with reasonably transparent compression chews through 375MB. We're actually getting to the point where even half a TB in a month is easy to blow past if you've got even two people who are consuming most of their media via the internet.

It takes time to develop cars. Heck, those many cars of GT also had their fair share of non-premium cars that were obiviously cooked a lot less than the show rooms cars. Yeah, they may have had 1000 cars, but they definitely didn't have all the polish of the others. I only play in the driver's seat, and it was frustrating to come across a car I liked only to have it in 3rd person.

Oh yah, I completely forgot about those horribly implemented cars, where it looks like all they did was import over cars from a PS2 game directly into a PS3 game without updating it's graphics.

But ya, that's what I mean when there's less cars now. Because they're trying to make them look realistic, it's keeping them from putting out more cars. If they actually felt different while driving, I'd be fine with that. It just doesn't though. FWD all feel the same, RWD all feel the same, and AWD all feel the same. They just look different and sound different.

I tried this back in the what... ps3 days was the last one? When I realized they modeled the higher end cars in a higher quality than the lower end cars, it really annoyed me. I couldn't get into it after that and sold it quickly after. Sticking with Forza Horizon ever since.

Uhh, no...that's not true. Try the C4 ZR-1, and then hop in the CTR Yellow Bird (both simple RWD cars) and tell me they handle the same.

This crushes Forza for one reason: VR. Once you play a driving sim in VR it's almost impossible to go back.

Speaking as somewhat of a driving sim snob (and sometime amatuer racer irl), GT does a good job physics wise. Not as good as some on the PC, but better than most.

I doubt Gran Turismo is going to make much of a dent in the Forza franchise at this point. Turn10 figured out that people on the consoles want a sim-like racing game, just like they want open-world sim-light style arcade racing in the form of Forza: Horizon. Say what you will about Forza 7, loot boxes or what have you, the game is fun with a pad or a wheel. No, it's not iRacing or RaceRoom, it isn't trying to be, but with a wheel it feels sim-ish, for a console anyhow.

Polyphony Digital on the other hand has been digging deeper and deeper into the racing-fetish rabbit hole and seems desperate to deliver a race simulator on console, not a racing "game". Gran Turismo Sport offers that up...no real single player component, lots of license tests and 'challenges', a focus on online multiplayer track-based racing in virtual leagues and about 180 cars (all racing conversions?). This seems to be where PD has always wanted to go, I just don't see that kind of support on consoles, Assetto Corsa sold like 2 dozen copies (embellishment) on console :( I downloaded the demo, haven't tried it, don't think any of my hardware supports the PS4 or Pro so I don't expect much. I watched a few videos of people racing the demo and it looked like they were still putting in sprite-based "X" trees with a high-rez skybox, just like every other GT game in the past, sometimes I get the impression that PD's ideal track is a hyper-detailed car on a track that looks like Outrun or Night Driver, so they can gush about how they accurately molded the refracting lenses in the tail lights or something. 2 dimensional trees from 1998, but you know, look at those tail lights :(

I haven't seen any reviews on the VR aspect of it, but I don't believe the Playstation VR is capable of delivering a satisfying experience if its past games (or lack of them) is any indication.

I could see VR being awesome for piloted type of games indeed. Would be really cool to have a setup with VR to play something in 4k type of resolution. Even better if you can play it in VR while still displaying it on a screen so you can be racing in VR while your friends watch you on the screen and take turns etc...

Does this exist?

You can dual screen today, so spectators can see what you see (the viewing angle isn't perfect but you get an idea) in VR, but 4K panels for each eye aren't here yet in reality, and I'm not sure what kind of hardware would be required to drive such beasts at 90fps sustained.

On PC it does...Not sure if PSVR outputs to the screen as well but most of them just output the left eye rendering to the screen so there's no (or extremely limited) additional overhead since it's just mirrored output of something already being rendered. If you were to output the full render to a streaming service via twitch or similar, your friends could watch on their phones in VR via the various vr headsets available. It might make them a little sick, though, as they won't have control of the motion, they'll be stuck with whatever the driver's head movement is.

I don't think the hardware is a big deal, just upscale. Yeah, it won't be as good as 4k native but you get rid of the screen door effect so you're still better than the lower res headsets even with the same graphics power. Not as good as native 4k, but still better than the same rendering on a lower res headset with more room to improve. I just don't think there are the high refresh low persistence 4k screens at that size yet, at least not affordably.

Good luck all on GT. I gave up after GT6 wouldnt run on my ps3 slim when the 2nd patch installed. Turned out to be known issue on the slim ps3. Returned the game to store. A few months later i bought my first xbox360 and forza 4 motorsport. Leaving GT in thr dust.

Are time limited demos common these days? Used to be the case that once you downloaded and installed a game demo one could play it as long as desired.

170+ cars is plenty for me. Anything over say 100 is more than I would ever drive anyway. I suspect more will be added with DLC anyway.

and here i was limiting my play time on the demo so i didnt have to redo it all next week. Back to it!

They handle the same. I don't have a steering wheel setup, so must everything feels the same.

The VR component only works in 1-vs-1 races. Better than nothing, I guess, but you don't get to experience the whole game like PCARS or iRacing.

Agree on the second point. I still get the most enjoyment as far as actual driving goes with Gran Turismo, though PCARS 2 is close to dethroning that position.
