The next NCASE project: a Steam Machine-style case (indeterminate)

As he writes:
1: for better look
2: easier logistics,

Please, read.
Thanks for your post, but I did read what was written, so your snippy tone seems a bit unnecessary. My point is that people can already chose a panel without ODD slot, should they so wish, and I don't think the slot spoils the aesthetics of the case in any event. I take the point about logistics, but it seems a bit late in the day to worry about that when you've been offering this option for the past four years (or however long it's been). To actively remove the choice now seems silly.

Waha or Necere, do you have rough figures showing the split in sales between ODD / no ODD Ncase M1s?

It was right around 50/50 for quite a while, IIRC. More recently, it's shifted away from ODD models, but it's still surprisingly high.

But given that the parts already exist for the M1, why would you remove this feature? It just seems perverse.

Fair points. I don't want to derail this thread, so let's move further M1 discussions to the M1 improvement thread.

M1 with ODD is trending lower, I suspect < 2 yrs, it will be below mfg MOQ. That will lead to extra cost to offer the option and replacements for defects. At that point, we will likely remove ODD option.

For logistic reasons and personal preference, I hope it happens sooner :p

The ODD slot on the M1 panel looks out of place. So for a better look.

Exactly. Also, it was a bit annoying to pay extra for the no-ODD top panel back in the original crowdfunder. Should have been the other way around - the ODD peeps paying extra (but I know, ODD haters like me were in the minority back then, and most probably just didn't care). :p

Well, as an "ODD peep", if the sales numbers now show that ODD capable M1 sales are in the minority then I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for this option.

I respectfully disagree.

I use my optical drives all the time on both of my M1 computers. In fact, I wouldn't have bought one if it wasn't ODD capable. The clean, symmetric slot fits perfectly with the M1's minimalist appearance.

It was my opinion, just a boil down of what he wrote. :)
I don't mind the ODD but I'm happy I didn't order it back some years..havent used disc for several years. I was just rather annoyed that he gave quite the reasons for his views, and saying what HE thinks is out of shape/bad alligned can't really be argued against as it.is personal preference hence I just wrote it short in case he didn't read it thou thoroughly.

Call it snippy, I don't mind. Just pointing out what he wrote.
Although you might think it is silly, you've now gotten an even deeper look into how and why.

Yay! Been refreshing this thread every day. Is this a partial redesign?

Using a new PCie Riser I found, I flipped the GPU so the fans are facing the same direction as the CPU heatsink.

If there is going to be a window, it will be on the same side as the dual 120mm fans above the CPU heatsink.

I have to do something for NFC for Aug, so I will drop the model with Necere and maybe he will show some renderings if you guys ask nicely.

The round vents looked too much like a kitchen cooktop. So trying another look.

I'm not really sure the window is worth the loss in airflow. If that's where the 2.5 inch drive cage area is, sure, but otherwise, that's space for fans to breathe.

What is the difference in performance between a window vs. ventilation for the GPU part of the Top Panel?

The dual 120x15mm fans are *very close the GPU, I'm hoping that's enough for airflow, but the only way to know is to get the prototype and test it out.

From left to right:
1. A GTX 1070 mini (~175x130mm) with a Flex PSU. In this setup, the two 2.5" HDD/SSDs are not interfering with airflow.
2. A Zotac GTX 1080 / 1080TI mini (~211x130mm) with a HDPLEX 300W ACDC. In this setup, there is room for one 2.5"SSD under the GPU, likely toasty, but not interfering with airflow.
3. Showing the last image with the Top Panel on. I'm experimenting with a new window cutout.
4. Showing the last image with the Top Panel on and Window installed. The slotted vents are cut into the Window.

Dimensions: 72x270x336mm, 6.53L (72x280x336mm including protrusions, 6.77L)

GPU Support:
- Flex PSU + Short GPUs (175mm or less),
- HDPlex 300W AC-DC + Zotac 1080 / 1080 TI short cards ( 211mm)

I'm 90% there for getting a new prototype.

One more issue I wanted to get opinion on. Full window or half window?

Speaking of windowless designs.

G-Unique has a new fanless PSU for a 18+ Core (X99 or X299) and Titan XP/1080Ti setup in this case.

So I added the support for *four 120x15mm fans in this case with a new outer panel to match. I might try and cook some eggs on the outer panels when the system hits full load.

Are the fans over the GPU full width or slim?

120x15mm slim fans. 25mm fans would make this case about 10mm thick.

This case is primarily for people running 95W CPU (7700K) and 150W GPU (GTX 1070).

G-Unique wants to show off his new 500W fanless PSU, so I'm creating this version that has additional fan bracket and ventilation for him to test. Depending on the results, this might be the windowless option.

sorry if I missed this before - but is there the ability to install an IR sensor to the inside/front of this case?

... maybe I should just buy a NUC :)

I'll take a look the IR modules available.

I can make a hole in the front panel to make it work

Here are some prototype pics. Due to new environment regulations, most of the anodizing factories are shutting down. I'm currently on a waitlist for anodizing.

Looking forward to the next Ncase to come out. Not sure what it will be with all the current projects in limbo, but it's good to see some progress nevertheless. Almost pulled the trigger on a HTPC case this weekend, so this one in particular has my interest.

I can make this case happen, it's up to you guys to convince Necere.

On my end, both my concept, and his concept, can be ready by Q1 2018.

ughh I have been anxiously waiting for any news on this case until i recently stumbled across a post necere made on another forum which convinced me for whatever reason he was not interested.

After you have a design and accurate cad file to send to a manufacturer and render what else is left to be done? How for along is this project can someone please educate me

seriously whatever it takes

I will test the prototypes. Depending on the quality of mfg, thermals (8700K+GTC1080), riser decision, I will make a decision.
