According to KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has tilted interest in the mobile industry away from under-display fingerprint recognition towards camera-based 3D sensing technologies as the ideal user authentication solution: inquiries by Android smartphone vendors into 3D-sensing technologies have at least tripled since Apple unveiled its TrueDepth camera and Face ID technology, which replaces traditional Touch ID fingerprint recognition in the iPhone X, set to launch in November.

Kuo went on to say he believes the next two to three years will see shipments of 3D sensor-equipped Android devices to exceed those with under-display fingerprint recognition by a factor of two or three or more. This will be mainly due to 3D-sensing's wider compatibility with LCD screens than under-display optical fingerprint recognition, which is exclusive to OLED panels, said Kuo. The KGI analyst also believes Samsung's continual dominance of the high-end OLED panel market over the next two to three years will mean shipments of under-display optical fingerprint recognition will remain significantly capped.

Apple directs the industry. Doesn't matter if people like it or not.

Yaaa no, i'd like to unlock my phone with my finger not my face. Pointing the phone at your face all the time will make you look like an idiot.
Only reason apple went this way is because the 3d touch add's thickness to the screen and the under the glass fingerprint reader won't work.

Turned off Face Unlock after a couple of days of use, it worked but man was it obnoxious. Tried iris unlock on my S8, and it's just as bad. *IF* the Apple version doesn't actually need to be positioned within a very set limit, then maybe. Otherwise, even with the moronic fingerprint layout on my S8, it's still faster/easier to unlock with FP than it is with iris.

If I get a X, I might use face for unlocking apps, but not my phone (same is true for finger readers). Until there's a law that says law enforcement can't force me to unlock my phone with a thumb, i'll use a pass code.

So yet another "Apple is great" KGI story about Apples facial recognition.

fuck facial recognition. Why go for something slower, dumber, and makes you look like a tool in public.

The finger unlock button on the back of my 6P is fast and works every time during the process of picking up the phone.
