Back to school shopping just got way easier for freshmen enrolling at Ohio State next fall: The school announced on Wednesday that every incoming freshman will be supplied with an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, and Apple keyboard case starting in 2018 as part of a new partnership with Apple. The iPads will be paid for from funds from Ohio State's "administrative efficiency program."

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “At Apple, we believe technology has the power to transform the classroom and empower students to learn in new and exciting ways. “This unique program will give students access to the incredible learning tools on iPad, as well as Apple’s new coding curriculum that teaches critical skills for jobs in some of the country’s fastest-growing sectors,” said Cook. “I'm thrilled the broader central Ohio community will also have access to coding opportunities through Ohio State’s new iOS Design Lab.”

Wonder what model of iPad they get, then multiply that by 7000+ incoming freshman and OSU just writes checks to Apple for $5+ million each school year? What does OSU get out of this "partnership"

I've seen these "partnerships" though, they really should be called "creating your addicts". Albeit with software languages where they give free use to the school, and so you get really good at it but then when you get out in the real world you realize the programming compiler isn't free.... fucking IDL bullshit!

Griffin's right. But considering student loans are already bat-shit crazy, why not add an iPad Pro?

Apple keeps doing this too all schools these days. Get people hooked on apple and the sheep will keep comming.

Wonder what the privacy policy attached to the Apple products is? Maybe Apple is planning on making its money back by data mining tens of thousands of OSU students. Given how well some of the ad targeting algorithms work, the students will receive ads for Michigan sports wear.

Kind of the opposite problem now. Universities mainly teach Java. It's considered easier than C++ with it's pointer management. And Java dev environments like Eclipse are free and it works well with linux/unix. The problem being there's a glut of Java programmers and not enough .NET developers (Especially .NET web work (MVC etc)) IMHO: We are making programmers weaker with each generation.

I expect whoever worked out that detail on the OSU side will be employed by Apple within a year. I've seen this kind of thing several times over the past few years at OSU.

I'm a senior (27 year old lol) at the University of Maryland on the GI bill. I'm even a walk on football player here and we face Ohio state.

Ipads are extremely useful in school, we use it in athletics to review plays, every athlete gets an ipad to do homework on the go while on the bus. It is also useful in class because I can write notes on my ipad instead of wasting paper and losing them. I use it for every class and in athletics. Power point loads up on my ipad and I can write notes directly on the powerpoint slide instead of writing on a piece of paper.

I havve the 12.9 ipad pro with pencil and keyboard.

They help but only people who bash Apple will say otherwise.

*let me put on my old man voice for a second*

Back in my day we wrote notes with pencil and paper and we liked it that way.

Not to dismiss you, but a laptop is way more powerful for doing homework. And hand written notes are superior in so many ways from resolution to ability to quickly make changes. That plus studies have shown that back lit displays actually reduce your retention ability.

But as many of my engineering professors taught me, "Listen to what I'm teaching you, understand the concepts, then write notes." Writing notes constantly doesn't give your brain the ability to process what's being taught to it.

Nothing is done for free someone paid for it somewhere and that's most likely the tuition increase that "gave" you the device for free.
Why does it have to be an iPad? There are plenty of other tablets that can be used for the exact same purpose. Saying Apple is the only way is just a bit one sided.

Actually that employee probably got a bonus from Apple on the side for convincing administration to try this program out.

I don't see an issue with it being an iPad over other tablets. I would have made the same choice.

Just from my own experience dealing with end users, it would be much easier to support and secure the iPads/iOS devices vs. other tablets on this scale of distribution.

I'd be pissed if I was a student or paying tuition. Ultimately, tuition dollars are probably paying for these. I'd much rather have a laptop than a tablet.
I've used the Pro quite a bit - it's decent for a tablet and the keyboard is ok to type on. However, it's still a tablet with lots of limitations. It's also kind of big.

False. Chromebooks are FAR easier to deploy and to manage in an education environment...and quite a bit cheaper too. (I realized you said "tablets", but they are adding keyboards to these, so a chromebook would be a direct competitor)

And in other news, Ohio State just announced a $1,500 tuition increase for incoming students.
But don't worry, They will just add it to your student loan that you can struggle to pay off while working at Starbucks after graduation.

Oh that university isn't "giving" anything.

Give is a very misleading title :)

I remember getting a IBM 386 system when I entered college. They gave them to each freshman, but stopped that program a couple years after. This will just jack up those kids tuition. At some point college prices will become unsustainable.

We are already past that point.
The only reason tuition is still going up is because the government keeps pushing subsidized student loans.

It isn't about apple. It's about the fact that the same things can be done far better on far cheaper and less limited devices.

Making what money back? Apple is not giving these free, they are being paid for with tax dollars. Also, Apple already data mines all its systems, Apple has one of the most data rich ad networks out of anyone, it is said to even put Googles to shame.

It's funny, usually these partnerships work as part of customer acquisition costs. I give you a ton of computers (or drugs, if you're a pharma rep) for super cheap knowing that we're likely to pick up a few brand loyalists. In the end, you save money, and we the supplier get more sells on the backend.

With Apple, I don't even think they get much of a discount. Apple gets the cash and the brand loyalists program.

"iPad, as well as Apple’s new coding curriculum that teaches critical skills for jobs" Um no, you will find that using a iPad extensively will not help you get a job. You will find the opposite true as you enter the actual business world and go omg... where is my iPad? What is this keyboard and mouse thing? OMG!

It’s $45K a year for an out of state student to go to OSU.

But he let’s take some money from a state fund to cover the cost of those iPads.

The State of Maine signed on with Apple for our K-12 laptop program, starting in 2001. We got what amounted to a 5 - 10% discount per device, in exchange for indoctrinating an entire state full of children.

I type quicker than I write, and it is easier to read. And much easier to add to and re-order at a later time.

But an Ipad Pro is certainly lame. It is hampered by being iOS and a proper laptop is much more practical. Even if it was a Macbook Air, it would be a much more logical choice.

IPad is fairly useless for certain majors. I would have sold it when I was a computer science major. Rather have the money to buy a better laptop.

Sadly, nothing. Companies don't actually have to straight up bribe their way in for this shit, usually it is just smooth talking the right moron in administration. They find some dumb admin who is an Apple fanboy/girl and convince them how extremely nice and cool it'd be for students to have all this tech for "free". It then gets sold as some nice "bonus" for the students, without of course mentioning that the students are paying for it via tuition.

Hope it comes with the stylus so they can color.

Total waste of money now the college is spending more money to buy students crap instead of putting that cost on apple who is clearly the one who wants this so badly. (ie the administrative overhead of the program vs telling students to buy it from apple and apple providing a discount code.
