I prefer the portable Hi MD player, but I can't find one. I think there are old MD player that has optical out, but they can't play Hi MD

As to deck model, again, I don't see one that can play Hi MD and has optical out. Can anyone help?

and if there is no optical out, is there a way to use the headphone out as coax out, would that work?

Still have a Sharp deck unit and portable. I fired up the deck a couple years ago cause I didn't feel like rebuying ELO's Greatest Hits. So I just ripped it with Audacity.

I didn't know they tried to revive MD. Did they produce any albums for Hi MD? Sony messed up and only released albums under their own studio on the original MD. Some good hits for sure, but still very limited.

I saw that link at minidisc, and yes, the deck model in HiMD can be purchased w/ Onkyo. I like TEAC better, but TEAC only support MD, not HiMD

But I need a portable unit mostly , as I use it at the gym quite often. Too bad they don't have it

While it wasn't a Hi-MD model, many years ago (like 15 years ago almost to the day, actually, back in Sept 2002) I purchased a Sony MZ-N1 portable MiniDisc player/recorder, loved that thing to death and was getting just over 100 hours of battery life with the gumstick fully charged + a brand new AA alkaline in it, crazy battery life that even today's more advanced and more efficient devices still can't match.

Anyway, I know for a fact that it had a headphone jack that actually did triple duty:

- it was a regular analog 1/8" headphone jack aka 3.5mm for you Metric freaks
- it worked as an Optical In aka TOSLink jack
- it worked as an Optical Out aka TOSLink jack

So, some of the better and high(er) end Sony portables could provide an Optical Out as well as Optical In using just that one jack but I never made any use of it other than testing it one time with a friend's Sony receiver that had a TOSLink Optical In connection. Was neat that I could remove my headphones and press Play and I could literally see the beam of light in the bottom of the headphone jack.

NOTE: Even though the MiniDisc.org info page says it only has analog headphone and Line-Out I assure you the MZ-N1 did offer Optical Out through that headphone jack and I did use it that one time to verify it worked.

Might be something to consider looking for, or some other model that's a Sony "top of the line" one from years ago. Honestly at this point in time actual MD usage is kinda passe what with smartphones covering all the bases nowadays with mostly better everything related to audio playback and obviously they do lots of other stuff as well.

But exactly how? It's a TTL with the 3.5 mm jack. How do you make that to be Toslink Optical out? How do you connect it? As I need to connect a digital signal from my HiMD portable to my DAC

EDIT: I think I know what you mean. I just try a mini toslink to that jack and output it to my DAC. There is no signal. And when I look into that hole, there is no red dot.

I'm using the NH1

Yeah, you used a mini toslink cable for both output and input, it's how I used to get cd's on my minidisks until I got the Sony MXD-D3.

No, its way too old for that, doesn't even support MDLP IIRC. But it could copy a cd at 4x with no loss of quality, I'd borrow cds and have them back to people in 15 min.

With one of these which were damned handy at the time - the TOSLink input/output LED was inside the headphone jack on the MZ-N1 (and other models):

Comes in quite handy when you least expect it. :D

Well, I have the above. And I did try it. The NH1 just doesn't give any optical output. I won't be buying a MZ-N1, so the best soln. is, I'll hope for TEACAM release a HiMD ver. of their deck that has Co Ax Digital out. I mean, they still release deck w/ cassettee on it, so I don't see why can't we see HiMD in their next model
