CBS Los Angeles thought it was sort of odd not to see a line wrapping around the building at the Apple Store this morning due to the new iPhone 8 release. Guess all the fanboys will be waiting on the X. Warning, autostart video. Meh. Screencap below of the excitement.

PASADENA (CBSLA) — There was something missing at Pasadena’s Apple Store for the Friday release of the iPhone 8 – a line of eager fans. Previous releases of the iPhone attracted hundreds of Apple fans waiting in the early morning hours at several stores across Southern California.

Apparently Apple lost out to Chick-fil-a as the camp out spot. We just had a new one open and people were camped out in the Houston heat the day and night before opening just to get free Chick-fil-a for a year... which turned out to be 52 coupons for a combo, one per work.

I'm really worried this will ignite the era of all flagship smartphones costing $1k now... damn you, Apple.

Not if no one buys them.

The masses of people not showing up for the iPhone 8 launch is a pretty damn good sign they are all waiting for the iPhone X I think. People are going to buy them. I know people that skipped the 8 to wait for the X. It's crazy but it's going to happen. Samsung and the other manufacturer's can't sit twiddling their thumbs and have their devices "seem" not as great if the price isn't matched with the iPhone X. For you and me and most people on here, we know what we're getting but if someone sees a $1k devices and compares that to a $800 device, they will think the $1k is 'the' premium device to get. Sucks but unfortunately Apple has all the mindshare they need to jack up prices as they wish.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 : ~$950 (for only 64gb internal storage btw)

Rumored pixel 2 high spec price: $950

Iphone 8+ 256gb : $950

Not just apple doing this,

Right but this is $1k for the base model. Higher specs have always reached the $900 range.

Yep, however Samsung offers deep discounts on occasion apparently.

Not so sure about apple.
But yeah , it sucks flagship phones are going up in price.
Google is setting up trade in, and saw a discount on the x4, so they are doing some games with prices... I wished they all cut the bullshit and just price it right i guess.

I finally tried Chick-fil-a not too long ago...not sure what the hype was about, the chicken itself is pretty good but the price for what you get was not worth it IMO. In addition to waiting in a fairly long drive-thru line.

If one thing is true about Apple fanboys it's this:

And the more $$$$ the better.

Fun fact, Chick-Fil-A is the most profitable per store fast food franchise in America topping even Micky D's. They are very consistent for a fast food chain.

Yeah, if the food was several dollars cheaper I would probably consider it more often. Maybe it's cheaper in other states...I just remember paying like $7 for a fairly small chicken sandwich at this location.

Has the note ever been a flagship model or was it the galaxy s series?
Any way you spin it, it was a fancy galaxy s model with a pen. The latest iteration had the explosion feature which of course should increase the price of it's next version.

I think people are just going to come to an understanding that the newest iterations of phones are really less and less different then the previous year's model and they should upgrade a lot slower, kind of like desktop pcs.

Most people looking to upgrade will wait for the X, if you were already going to blow $800 (not including any trade in or other carrier incentive) then it's not much of a reach for a X.

Between a 6s and an 8 there isn't a great deal that is new with the X you get the OLED screen and new form factor. Granted you could get that on a non Apple device.

Seems like less of a cash grab than going to a Titan Xp over a 1080. Still a grab though.

I got the Note 8 with T-mobile BOGO free deal. Also, Note 8 has the S Pen with Wacom digitizer, which I think justifies the $930 (T-mobile) price tag.

Of course they not lining up for the 8. They don't want to be looked down on buying the cheap model. The ones with 8 will be looked as posers.

My first thought is that the people crazy enough to line up are waiting for the iphone x like others have said in this thread.

I also wonder who really stands in lines for phones? I ordered mine, I'd rather have it shipped to me.

One does not go to the drive thru during prime lunch and dinner time. The one by my office always has cars wrapped around the building and then some - they actually had to put in markings for people to stop because they were blocking the people who just picked up their food, stalling the whole line. We just go inside and get it to go, the service is fast and friendly, and it's great walking in and a car you passed waiting STILL hasn't even gotten tot eh order box. Plus ordering inside lets you check before you leave, though I've never once had them screw up my order. Could be that they pay better than McD's or the others also helps get better quality employees. Any time I go into a McDonald's it seems like no one working there gives a crap about anything, except maybe the developmentally challenged they hire to clean the tables and take out the trash. At Chik-fil-a it seems they all really like working there.
Prices may vary, I am sure $7 gets you a whole combo, large, here. I have crappy signal at the moment, I tried to log in to their app and get a price but I am pretty sure the chicken sandwich alone is under $4 here. I know the only other fast food place I ever go to that ends up cheaper than CFA is McD. Arby's, Wendy's - it costs about the same as I spend at CFA.

I see Apple hiring people to stand in line for the X release to generate hype. It's been done before.

And this my friends, is how Apple is so great at brain washing its sheeple. This statement above can't be any truer for a typical Apple fanboy.

After the problems they had with scalpers looking to export to China a few years back Apple, don't really encourage the line up as much as they used to. It wasn't a good look.

Back in the olden days I worked with a software engineer who would book time off for an Apple launch day. Did he buy stuff? Nope.

He rented himself out to people and waited in line for them. I don't know how much he made doing it, but it was worth a day off for a Software Engineer in Toronto, one of the highest paying markets in the world.

The X is a nice phone. Looks to be a decent upgrade. I would like to, but not at that price.

The 8 is just a small upgrade. I guess if you're coming from a 5 or lower, it's great. From a 6 or 7? Nah.

Why go for a mediocre upgrade when you can have the better upgrade?

Both are a bit of cash. If I'm upgrading every 2+ years, I want the best one that will last the longest. Besides, the X is a tremendous value.

Like-for-like models of the X vs the 8 are $300 more. That is 35-42% more of a cost by choosing the X.

Nope, that'a about standard across the board I think. Don't get me wrong, the service aspect is where Chick-fil-a wins, hands down. From their dual drive-through systems to the family friendly service inside. Soccer-mom's eat that shit up! My wife and kids love going to Chick-fil-a because they come around to offer refills, swap out their still kids meal item for ice cream, keep the play area a heck of a lot cleaner than McD's or BK, and the chicken isn't half bad. Myself, I just can't get over my college days when they opened in the food court and charged as much for a chicken sandwich as Burger King did for a Whopper right next to them... the original sandwich with bread, chicken, and one pickle slice :p I'll hit up Popeyes or Raising Canes for lunch before I go to Chick-fil-a.

As for waiting in line.. I've never really understood it. I didn't do it on Black Friday before the Internet and Cyber-Monday craze. I couldn't imagine doing it to watch a midnight screening of Star Wars like some people. I'm definitely not going to do it for a phone. Stay up until midnight and order online in my underwear... sure, but camping out in a parking lot for a phone... not a chance.

The Apple store here in Annapolis, MD had no line this morning for the phone and had a ton of them in stock. First time I have ever seen that for an iphone.

Star Citizen...

I think Star Citizen is different. I think that's a case of people realising they got bamboozled and now they'll say anything, do anything, post anything to avoid looking like fools.

I know this is a hardware forum, but i do not understand the appeal of a $1000 phone, an $800 phone, or even a $600 phone etc. I bought my unlocked LG G5 brand new for $199 and it replaced a Motorola Pure X that was easily getting the job done until my wife dropped it on cement. Frankly since the galaxy S5 or so i have not been seeing any new "must have features" Based on the hype I might bought an X for $399, but $229 is the most i have ever spent on a brand new phone ( though i always get a previous year mid tier or flagship device )

What are people doing with these phones that i cannot do with a snapdragon 820 equipped phone? I feel like i must be missing something.

it's really kind of disappointing seeing people associate Apple owners to sheep or mentally retarded individuals. It could simply be that's the phone THEY LIKE! My god... My wife likes her Iphone, and likes it far more than the Androids we tried out around the time of the Iphone5. My wife has asked that we have the same phone so that we can communicate easier and the like. (Facetime, etc) We've usually bypassed every other model but are due for either the 8 or X. Am I going to not get the X simply because some rage-nerds on [H] think that someone buying said phone is an idiot? No. I'm going to get the phone because I love my wife and she loves her Iphone. At some point Apple haters will dig their heads out of their asses and realize that it could really just be preference and people decide to buy the newest for the new stuff. My word people, stop with the superiority complexes over Android vs IOS.
