GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Discussion Thread

Guys, about how far are we from seeing 1180Ti (or whatever the next card will be named) in our hands? A year ?
Seriously could be closer to 2 years if they repeat the cycle from Maxwell to Pascal.

IdiotinCharge totally nailed it with stating how at this point NV mainly competes with themselves as well as how they'll likely release same/similar performance cards for less in the duration. I'm proud of AMD for Ryzen but it's pretty obvious NV has nothing to fear in terms of the gaming GPU market. It's really about keeping their profits and shareholders happy at this point.

I'd also add that those who do serious custom liquid loops on the TI's will see performance gains that may still rival the next Founders TI's, other than Vram of course. Just a guess, but Pascal has shown some serious potential when treated right.

Volta will have wide availability by the end of Q1, meaning Ti in Q4 at the earliest. I think we'll see it at one of the tech conferences in Q1 2019, perhaps a Titan sometime in the 2nd half of 2018?
idk, just guessing.

The earlier Q3/Q4 GV104 rumors put me off the 1080 Ti. Remember when everyone was freaking out about the new Titan obsoleting the old one really fast? Wish I had ignored all those dumb cunts and bought the Ti at launch. I can take some solace in knowing I have barely played any games in the last 6mo's.

Haha I'm with you...I've been throwing middle fingers at Nvidia since I bought my Titan Xp (little p) since it was thrown out so quickly for the Ti and the XP. The price you pay for being FIRST. I really hope I don't have to wait until Mid 2018 for the next Titan though, jeez. I also upgraded to 4k in the last 60 days and now I'm suffering (marginally) with one Titan Xp.

Yes I'm assuming the next Ti realistically available in 2019 after they milk the next Titan slot early adoption all over again.. which is why I went with 1080ti(2) now. I'll be waiting until the next Ti and until 2019 to upgrade gpus regardless, getting a few years out of these, repeat. Looking toward Xmas 2019 / tax return 2020 period most likely. I tend to be more of a patient gamer now in regard to picking when I buy things rather than what comes out first. Waiting on dp 1.4 1000nit QD FALD HDR (35" VA ultrawide) in the monitor realm now too. That will be a big upgrade in 2018.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with my 1080SLI rig. I jumped on getting them because I had bought a pretty nice LG 31" Cinema 4k monitor a couple of years ago(still love it) and quickly found out the my previous 970SLI setup couldn't come close to coping(30-50 w/ most things turned to minimum for demanding games). The 1080's do the job for 50-70fps(ultra and v-sync) but it's ridiculous how close the Strix TI comes to it. The custom liquid loop reviews get within 5 fps of my SLI. Not to mention the increased heat/cooling issues these beasts have and I needed to order the HB bridge because of the spacing on my MOBO.

At this point moving forward, it's TI's or nothing for me in the future. From all the stories and reviews I've read from both sides of the fence, those who bought less(x60's,x70's,x80's) to more(Titan's) you can almost always find similar feelings. It's really rare to find buyers remorse from anyone who's bought a TI since the 780TI's and on. That's what finally convinced me to try.

Yeah truthfully I see your point - the Titan cards are such a rip off it does make more sense to go with 2x Ti's which theoretically you could get for around $200 more than just 1 Titan. If ALL games worked extremely well with SLI I would definitely be on that boat - it's amazing to me how far we've come yet how far we still have to go with multi GPU configs.

On a few other threads others have mentrion MGpu w/o acknowledging it's true lack of support. Like many others, my old GPU's are sitting and nothing is really happening. I love the concept, but the reality is another story. I'll never forget when I had 970SLI running with a 780OC in 4k/60+fps for both Metro's and Batman Arkham City w/ ultra settings. Any other game was a struggle but those were amazing. Why optimize software when you can sell hardware and stocks! If it ever does regain some kind of support I'll re-purpose my 1080's to some kind of TI rig, Otherwise MGpu is dead to me. I like the idea of what DX12 has offered but have only read 1 or 2 articles where it's really happened so far.

Developers don't have an incentive to develop for mGPU as they're not selling hardware. Prior to DX12, when it was the hardware company's responsibility, they had incentive to support multiple GPUs being able to be used simultaneously because it helped them sell hardware. Without that incentive, mGPU development is going to be spotty, IMO.

A counter-point to this is that all major engine developers are working to add MGPU support to DX12/Vulkan codepaths in their products, and because of the complexity of using these low-overhead APIs, game developers will be relying on engine developers even more than in the past. We could very likely see an increase in MGPU support, given that game development isn't standing still, and gamers are demanding more performance for high framerate monitors and VR.

I've been kicking myself for not picking up the GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition I had been planning to buy 2 weeks ago. I'd put buying it on hold as my mum was visiting and figured I wouldn't get any real usage out of it. Since then the 1080ti here in Germany comes with a free copy of Destiny 2, and has shot up in price (799€ to 879) and many other 1080ti's have disappeared off the virtual shelves :/

Considering ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti OC instead but it is scarce too (one place has unknown delivery, another 2-4 days).

Prices are about to go up due to dram shortage... so you better move on it or wait it out.

Took my card apart and unplugged that darn Geforce logo for good I never had to deal with a Geforce GTX logo before. LED Visualizer resets with every new Driver install so I said hell with it I'm going to unplug it. Even with LED Visualizer it would be bright green during boot even that was enough to piss off the pope.

When you get em, post some feedback on the pump noise. Was considering going AIO for the 1080 Ti, still not sure.

Will do. Looks like I just missed the cutoff on 9/1 and they won't ship till 9/5 though.

I've had a lot of AIOs (10+) and the only one I've ever had an issue with was the Fury X. I'll let you know on these guys...

I'm guessing Nvidia have stopped selling the FE's. They haven't been in stock for months it seems. Was looking to get some. Will probably get drunk in Mexico instead. Haven't been drink in ages.

Was in Micro center earlier to do a return and they had stacks and stacks of video cards and other things. Seems several manufacturers got done testing bad/returned parts. I think I got lucky as the CSR was in the process of marking a MSI 1080ti FE. Couldn't pass it up at this price.

So far it's running without any issues. Now I just need a waterblock.

You also need to replenish your luck points, nice find.
Less fapping for a month dude!

It looks like they re-marked it with the wrong price because it would have been snapped up if it was on a shelf before at the "previous" price.

Haven't really heard of any issues with these. Most likely someone returned it to get a AIB card and gave a bogus reason for it. Heck of a score for that price. Way to go!

I can't hear the pump at all on any of them. The fan noise I'd say is average. You can't adjust the fans as far as I can tell. There's no problem installing a better fan and connecting it to your mobo though. Overall seems great...60C. Dumps heat out of my case.

Yes it adds to the cost but I replace all of my AiO cooler fans. I use hydro bearing fans in push/pull configuration. Mine are Cougar brand fans but some people use Noctuas. I use them in my case as case fans too.

Prices are going up. As of now there are only 4 1080 Ti's under $800 on Newegg, the cheapest being the MSI Gaming X @ $760.

After a little investigating, it seems to be a Gaming X PCB.
Not the same heatsink as the Lightning, though.

They got rid of the VRM cover plate and put some metal fins on it.

At this point we should just consider connecting cables and just put these baby's in a case of their own(not one of those ridiculous external gpu's one though). Talking a real case and PSU.

Or a custom mobo and case design which accomplishes something very similar by isolating the GPU in its own space. You could get some wicked airflow that way, and keep the cpu and gpu from cooking each other.

After being on Team AMD for the last 10 years I switched back to nVidia. I ended up getting a Gigabyte Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition 11G.

Setup my loop, radiator etc. Love how quiet it is even under load, got it overclocked a bit and am getting 20-30% higher FPS in previously CrossFired enabled games (I had 2 390Xs) and almost double in games that didn't.

I do have to say I miss the Crimson drivers especially the overclocking tool.

Hadn't quite thought of that. I've usually used ATX/EATX becuase of either 2/3 GPU's or many drives on the SATA III chips. These days that's totally unnecessary for even cutting edge gaming rigs.

Using an EATX type case along with a mini-ITX board and your idea wouldn't be that hard to implement. If the GPU is properly isolated and cooled there could be some very interesting prospects. My stuff is pretty much doing what I need it to so its unlikely I pursue this anytime soon but it would be interesting to see a build on this concept.

If I'm upgrading from a GTX1080 to a 1080 ti (EVGA step up), do I need to uninstall my current nVidia drivers or can I just plug in the new card?

Has anywhere tested the 12gbps GDDR5X cards? I'm shopping for a 1080Ti for my build and was wondering if the additional cost was worth it. I'm thinking not.

It's not worth it for the $. Most 1080Ti's can be pushed to about 12GHz anyway, and you only get about a 5-7% performance increase (and that's only in games that are actually sensitive to the extra bandwidth). Don't have any 1080Tis at the moment to test, but I tried this on my Titans, and going from the stock 10GHz to 11GHz (which gives basically identical mem band. to 11 & 12GHz on the 1080TI's narrower bus), the biggest performance difference I discovered was 10% in Metro Last Light redux benchmark when using SSAA.

Most games are much more responsive to core frenquency increases, so don't sweat the extra GHz on the memory as you'll probably be able to reach that on your own.

Thinking of selling my FE card and getting a EVGA FTW2 Elite with Red shroud

The lack of a red shroud on the FE 1080Ti is a real travesty - I mean seriously, what were they even thinking!? And then there's the fact that it's not even Elite! But to also not even bother to make it for winning... not twice or even once, man, that's just low and really poor engineering.

I was also thinking that GPU hardware vendors should sell us decorative sticker packs and multiple cosmetic magnetic mount clip-on shroud covers for our cards, then everyone could simply get the most out of them and realize their true awesomeness!
