Tim Cook Calls $999 iPhone X a “Value Price” in New Interview

$999 for a phone that's not quite on par with a Galaxy S6 from 2015? No thanks.

dear-iphone-x-users-welcome-to-2015-phone-x-galaxy-27782082.png

Since we're regurgitating these misleading tech memes, let's also take a second to compare things people actually care about, like:
1) battery life
2) photo quality
3) included bloatware
4) real-world app benchmarks and performance
5) a device that won't completely shit the bed in eight months, and actually get a replacement in a convenient manner if necessary

Comparing performance between the iPhone 8/X and a Nexus 6 (and probably most other Android device) is down right asinine, even with fewer cores or lower clock speeds.

I guess people disregard that in benchmarks Apple destroys Android in every aspect. I am a Note 5 user and have a Note 8 in the mail. I may actually return the Note 8 for an iPhone. (Also I've owned Samsung GS3, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z3C, Note 2. iPhone 3G/iPhone 4. The standby time on Android is ATROCIOUS.

Fuck outta here! What kind of idiots would be interested in benchmarks?!

I don't think the price is terrible, but it's high, no doubt.

I'd jump on a limb and say it is a value considering my current iPhone 6S Plus was $999.

If the Pixel 2 ends up being the same sort of price here, I give up.

I still can't get over the fact that here the iPhone 8 Plus is the same price as the 4G iPad Pro. The iPhone X is a lot more expensive. Just need to get people to call me on whatsapp / messenger.

I see Tim Cook in this ad and can actually picture a guy bent over a table with his pants down below his knees, shouting "PLEASE, SIR, CAN I HAVE ANOTHER!" to another half naked guy standing right behind him pumping full speed ahead, like some twisted 21st Century version of Locomotive Breath.

Problem is, it isn't Tim Cook I'm envisioning, but your typical Apple iPhone consumer; and even if it was Tim Cook I was envisioning, I'd still be disgusted.

Price does not matter really. It's Apple, people will pay whatever they are charged and like it. Not like they are going are going to overcharge you for any extra accessories..... /s

The amount of salty people is hilarious. Android is doing the same. Look at the note 8? It basically started it all.

CMAN... when was your current 6s $1k? Sorry, don't believe that one.

You think that the price of Note 8 is acceptable though? No, especially since Samsung's proposition to the user base has never succeeded through a premium luxury angle. I couldn't justify moving from Note 4 to 8 purely on Samsung essentially sitting on its laurel and not improving on the S8, and then charging me a grand just because of the Wacom stylus.

It pisses me off that Samsung has the gall of milking those of us who use Note series to this point. I actually would give it serious consideration if Note 8 brings much more to the table than the S8, but nope.

Oh yeah, I am real salty. Money was burning hole in pocket, but it cooled off after seeing what's being offered.

To be fair, he's correct. The iPhone X is a terrific value for Apple's bottom line.

The stupid bar at the top that wasn't implemented correctly in horizontal mode. Which causes every website to cut down the sides on both sides if the screen like old letterbox tells me that Tim doesn't realize that we pay attention to reviews. I was going to buy the iPhone X now I am just going to keep using my old phone . "Value" prices at Apple require perfect execution. Tim did not deliver.

Meanwhile I paid 230 for my Moto X pure. It's 1440p and has lots of bells and whistles. MMMMMM feels good.

If I hear someone complaining about how broke they are, and then I see them pull out a recent model iPhone, I loose all sympathy for them.
Just like when I hear someone bragging about how they can afford a much nicer car by leasing, then complain because they put to many miles on the car and can't afford the overage.

I'll plan to use my Note 4 for a long time. Don't like the curved screens and the ease in which they break. No way am I paying that much for a phone, I'd rather by another Note 4 for less than half the price.

It's pretty ridiculous that the $200 Note 4 today remains a damn good phone even if it will not get anything more than than Marshmallow.

I really wonder why is it that Samsung wouldn't do the following:

1. Update Note 4 with a Snapdragon 836, 4GB-6GB RAM
2. Give Note 4 better DAC (optional)
3. Bump up the cameras just a bit. Doesn't even need 2 cameras for the rear
4. USB-C, improved fingerprint sensor
5. Sell it as Note 4S.

An updated Note 4 with all of its features intact would be a very attractive package.

Yet people here spend $700+ for graphics cards to play games with. Go figure.

But it isn't made by Apple, Apple hate is trendy.

Apple Care also went from 129 to 199. Not putting much faith in the product either.

Yeah except Apple care covers physical damage, maybe they don't put much faith in idiots not smashing their phones.

It's a high end product with specs from nearly three years ago that you paid a high price for. You are paying a premium for specific branding. Nothing more, nothing less.

Isn't it funny that despite the "specs" even the iPhone 7 still runs circles around this years Android phones in real world usage. The iPhone X will be yet another step above that. Oh I forgot specs..... god people are stupid.

The specs are pretty sweet on the note8 compared to my note 5. I would not pay for the upgrade until this phone dies or is moderately obsolete.

You tell me if it's stupid to complain about the notch, taking a step back and face the iPhone each and every time you want to unlock it, to be stuck in Dongle life purgatory, having to foot $75 extra to get quick charge and then having to deal with the idiosyncrasies of not using USB-C but hanging onto Lightning?

Sorry, but Apple, who actually delivered a crushingly great chipset with a really optimized OS, had to botch it like that! I am really salty over that. Just why in this blue Earth did courage translate into creating more of a hassle!

Apple clearly has what it takes to make an unquestionably superb phone here, but they've gimped themselves with those decisions that run detriment to usability. It's to the point that I wish Apple would just stick the A11 and W2 into the 6S, give it fast charging, instead of delivering what they've been doing since 2016!

I dont agree with FaceID which is why I'm not buying one, still keeping my iPhone 7 though. That said I haven't tried it yet, it may actually be good and sooner or later I will have to buy one anyway. $75 extra to get quick charge... LOL harden up cupcake, you can still fast charge from a PC or whatever or use an iPad charger. I don't care about it anyway, fast charging killed my Note 4's battery within 1 year. I will never use it again, I only ever charge overnight anyway, always get a day from a charge.

I don't really think that it's fast charge that did Note 4's battery in, but rather the pisspoor power management. I've tossed out the OEM battery, and hell, the OEM battery actually can lead to freeze and whatnot from wear, a problem that goes away when you swap out for a fresh new battery. This isn't something that you would exhibit on Apple.

Android has only gotten its act together since Nougat in this regard, and it's still no iOS level.

Define runs circles in real world usage. It does what? Makes calls? Text message? Video calls? Websurfing? Seriously, explain how it runs circles around Android phones when you don't look at specs, benchmarks, etc. Last I checked, it does the exact same shit, at damn near the exact same speed in real world usage.

Hence why I don't bother getting a new phone until my old phone is starting to die and get an older flagship, cause there really is zero incentive to bother getting the latest flagships. I went from an Xperia Z2 to an X. The X ran slower than my Z2, so I sold that off and got a Z5. That was a few months ago. I think I'm still 3-4 generations behind, but...phone does the exact same shit as the new ones.

It is well known that the faster you charge a battery, the shorter its lifespan. Not to mention increased heat in the cells which is a lithium batteries worst enemy next to deep discharging.

I love the double standards... One minute everyones crapping on about Apple being far behind in specs then everyone is saying it doesn't matter if it still runs apps.

While jumping in and out of apps isn't what most people do, it shows up well the hardware cops with multitasking at the limit and future proofing. It also shows that the iPhone absolutely destroys the S8 when it comes to exporting video by 2x despite having "inferior" specifications.

A smartphone with so-so hardware specs carrying a $1K price tag and only 1 year of guaranteed support is "value priced"?

It sucks top end phone are going in the wrong direction price wise, however lower and middle are slowly getting better and more capable, year after year.

At least you get:
A. Memory Card and wireless charger or
B 360 Camera

As well as better specs, etc. Seems like much more "value" to me.

You're right. It's usually Android phones that lose their values, quickly.
Thank you, but what I was referring to was purchase value of new products.
How much extra are you paying for the panache of an Apple phone. It's a lot.
I liken it to leasing a new car every year or so.

If you get a $999 office chair and it works for you, it was a good value. It lasts longer but isn't mobile.

Apple sells their iPhone SE for $349, 32GB. That is a workhorse like the i7-7700K.

Because its not worth the asking price. They have to "bundle a memory card and wireless charger" to justify their sale price. They could have easily dropped the cost of their phone if they didn't offer those. So no, I'm not getting value. I'm paying for them all masked in the asking price.

Apple's A11 chip is faster than the Note 8. Hell, the A10 is faster. I'm using the Note 8 now (picked it up yesterday) but Samsung started the "driving up" of prices. I don't see the value I'm getting at the pricepoint I paid for (outright, $1299.99 CAD before taxes). I have 15 days to return if I don't like it. I am coming from a Note 5, and I do notice a slight speed bump, however as with most Samsung phones, they also get laggy over time compared to other Android phones. Also, all the android phones I've owned outside of the Z3 Compact had crap standby time. Apple dominates Android in that.

On top of that, Samsung needs to cram "better specs" because their hardware usage is highly inefficient (Software/touchwiz - I don't care what they're calling it now). Don't mix up better hardware for better optimization. Apple is and always will be king in that department. Snapdragon can't hold a candle to Apple's SoC.

You do it. I wouldn't ctrl+f that article with a ten inch pole! :p
>mfw reacting on an article without having read it

Cook's wholy "very few people will pay the full price of the phone initially" is a bit laughable in my opinion, given that the US market may be the no1 in size for the highest end, but the biggest market, China, is one where people pay in full by and large.

Now, I do understand that the purchasing situation in those People's Republic of China is of little to no concern in the domestic American context, but it's to illustrate that the percentage of people who finance in installments isn't as big of a share as Apple.co would suggest.

Note 8 is $930 and there is another phone the Mi or something that is supposed to be more than the X. There are plenty of phones that are less money, iphone 8 is $700 or about what an LG G6 was when launched.

I miss the two year contracts, I got my 64gb 6 plus for $200 with 2 yr and trade-in.
