Google to Kill Chrome Autoplay Madness

When Chrome 64 is released in January, autoplay will only be allowed when either the media won’t play sound, or the user has “indicated an interest” in the media: this means clicking or tapping somewhere on the site, adding the site to the home screen (mobile), or frequently playing media on the site (desktop). Some believe they have overcomplicated the process with such caveats.

Google takes "the user has indicated an interest" to mean that they have actively looked at the page, which is pushing it a bit. The videos will also play for desktop users if they have played media on the specific website before, or if a mobile user has added it to their home page. There's also a massive regressive step. In order to make the new scheme "more reliable," Google says it is removing the existing block autoplay setting and is also hitting mobile users by not blocking autoplay videos when mobiles are in data-saving mode, which seems nonsensical.

Good, I hope everyone else follows and abolishes this irritating and unnecessary practice!

That's good. Flashblock is a mandatory addon for me with only a couple sites whitelisted.

I don't think it should matter if it makes noise or not. Autoplay nothing. Its a waste of bandwidth.

Bring it. I am so sick of trying to read the news at work and autoplay BS is launching in the background at full volume.

Using an automute chrome extension does help.

Just let me globally enable/disable autoplay, and then whitelist/blacklist individual domains if I wish. That's it. Don't need to make it any more complicated.

Try doing what I do and read the news before you go to work.

Hater! :) My job frequently involves kicking off and monitoring slow running scripted jobs/upgrades. So there's a little time to catch up on the news, current events, etc. Half my coworkers are on Youtube all day, I try to be a good boy and limit internet use to news and sometimes tech news / HardOCP (I stay off forums at my desk though).
