iPhone X: Apple Unveils the “Future of the Smartphone” for $999

Not me. I am holding on to my 6s+ until whatever comes out after the X
Wish I had done the same instead of "upgrading" to the 7+. Much preferred the physical home button and headphone jack of the 6S+ over what the 7+ has to offer.

Wow... curved glass to the edge, oled, swipe up for app drawer, facial recognition for password, this feels like the note7 from last year. I really hope we don't start to see a bunch of people saying apple did it first, because this is literally apple copying samsung and there is no denying it.

Google should postpone to release the Pixel 2. That thing is guaranteed to be a level below the X with limited availability, probably next year or so. Oreo is also for in house folks. The Android just got smoked.

What are you talking about? The face unlock is crap for a variety of reasons already previously mentioned. The only other thing the phone does that other android phones haven't already done for years now is the animated emoji garbage. Really the only useful feature missing from google's phones is the wireless charging, which wouldn't be difficult for them to implement(and considering how long that's been around, a lot of people still don't care about it).

Also, what do you mean "oreo is also for in house folks"? I've had it on my pixel xl for a couple weeks now, no manual flashing or anything required. Even the "android just got smoked" bit is silly. What, home screen widgets? Had those. The pixel density for their "retina uber display"? My phone is already higher. The fact is, that most apple users will stick with apple, anyone who was going to be buying a new google pixel phone likely isn't going to buy an apple phone anyway.

No touchID? Fuk that, ill stick with my iPhone 7 thanks. So what happens when you want to unlock it when its dark?

Probably 8s or 9.

The iPhone X will likely be it's own line, so I'd suspect X1, X2 and so fourth.

You are aware that Android is more than one phone, right? I know Apple people have limited choices, but the Pixel does not represent the entire Android ecosystem. It's just Google's take on what they think people want in a device.

So, about as good as what Samsung has had on the market for a year or two then. Nice.

Am I the only person who doesn't suffer from phone-envy? To me new phone announcements are akin to Fashion Shows.

I'm with you. I got Iphone6 through work around time they came out and I've been happy with it for most part. Wish it had more storage, but I'm not the type of person that needs a new phone every 2 years. The wife on other hand. She got the Samsung S8 Plus and paid for it outright when they came out. and seems to want a new phone every 2 years. Maybe when smartphones came out I would look at others to see how fast they were, but nowadays it seems they are in a good spot in their speed/response. I get more annoyed at how much people are looking at their phones out in public, while drive, parties, dinner etc.

$1000 phones is a gimmick - Just a moneygrab for Apple, and I'm sure Samsung will follow right along in a year or so.

I'm good with my galaxy s6. I have only bought 2 smartphones in my life - galaxy s4 mini and galaxy s6. My s4 mini lasted 3yrs, and I got good deal on galaxy s6 afterwards. I'm keeping my galaxy s6 until it dies.

If the iPhone X's price wasn't so crazy I'd consider it. My iPhone 6 is showing a touch of age mainly due to the limited ram and the iPhone 8 looks like a good step up. In the end though if I don't get a jailbreak for the 8 then I will probably just swap out the battery and hold onto the 6 for a year or 2 more.

No touchID? Fuk that, ill stick with my iPhone 7 thanks. So what happens when you want to unlock it when its dark?

Usually there is some sort of infrared led at work as well to see in the dark. (at least I'm pretty sure thats how samsung does it)

It works in the dark. It's likely blasting your face with infrared which is then read by the phone in total darkness.

Another fragile, overpriced phone that will break the first time you drop it. Looks like they are copying Samsung again :p

No thanks, I'll stick with my Note 4 for a few more years.

With Face ID the FBI won't need you password anymore they just hold the iPhone X in front of your face.

Don't worry, there are plenty of "shrewd" Apple users out there who are probably already obsessing about a workaround for that. Kinda makes me think of the old saying "sit on my face," wondering whether hemorrhoids can be trained to look like eyes.

I can hear the emergency room docs now: "We got another one with a recta..., uh, rectangular orifice."

" The company spent $2.94 billion on research and development during the quarter, up from $2.56 billion a year ago and continuing a nine-month upward trend. "

The problem there is Apple doesn't actually spend much of their money on R&D, it's funded with the profits they rake in from the Cult members buying their products, obviously. :D

Apple has so much cash in reserve right now they could literally stop spending any revenue capital on anything and still be relevant 10 years from today which is a damned scary thought because of the sheer amount of profit made per iPhone. The iPhone X? For all the R&D that went into it the raw cost of the device itself manufactured from raw components and boxed up and shipped to stores around the world is probably going to be under $375 per unit so they're going to make fucking SHITLOADS of profit from it at the base price of $999 since it's basically using already existing tech for almost all the functionality including the A11 SoC they created (since they own the fab plant that makes 'em nowadays).

I mean sure, they're spending, but it's not like it's their money making things happen anymore, that hasn't happened for practically a decade now.

Almost EVERY feature they are touting has been on Samsung phones for YEARS! OLED screen? Check. Wireless charging? Check. Facial recognition? Check. Samsung even beat them to the punch with the dual lens camera! What, EXACTLY is so damn innovative here? Answer? Not a DAMN thing!

It projects IR "dots" onto your face and reads those, should work in the dark...even though it didn't work when they tried to demo it today.

Don't be haters - buy AAPL (actually, just buy the devices so my stock can go up - k, thanks). I won't be buying either device this year. I have an iPhone 7 and am happy with it (except for missing headphone jack). Maybe next year...
I'm also looking forward to Ars Technica reviews - I love reading their in-depth reviews of operating systems and phones.

Weill see first generation biometics are always shit. That said I am sure apple will do a much better job than Shitsung did with their piss poor efforts.

Really the only useful feature missing from google's phones is the wireless charging, which wouldn't be difficult for them to implement

As a EE who has designed for wireless charging, I can tell you with certainty that it is one of the hardest features to incorporate.

It needs your eyes to be open, it needs you to be looking at the lens, and the police don't need consent for fingerprint anyways. Turn your phone off if the police come. They can't ask for your password.

That ain't any trouble for West Baltimore PD.

Their whole FaceID thing is not something that Samsung has managed, although it awfully lot like what MS was able to do through Kinect.
jnemesh, if Samsung's face and retinal recognition was as reliable and as fast as fingerprint, then I'd be rolling my eyes over iPhone X.

Aside from that, we shouldn't be that pissed off about iPhone X, since Apple for once actually got to parity with the flagship Android phones of 2017! Apple finally has something that can legitimately stand shoulder to shoulder with Galaxy S8/ LG G6/ Huawei P10 plus/ Essential Phone just from a pure hardware pov.

Alright.. Maybe it sounded a bit "bitchy", but they way Apple handles the Keynote.. I dunno its freakin awesome and the X looks gorgeous while I wouldn't say that about the Note 8.

How do you wake up the screen if there's no home button to press? Will it have something like double-tap?

According to that Geekbench score posted earlier (find the image here) it showed 2989MB so, 3GB at least.

And before everyone starts bitching that so and so android phone has 6GB... the iPhone simply doesnt need more than 3GB because it doesnt run a bloated, inefficient OS.

I think you stare at it to let faceid do its thing.

That and your said OS is only ever meant to be installed on a one or two different hardware configurations, unlike Android. That's one thing Apple has done really well.

As a fan of iPhone's this thing is pretty lackluster. I was hoping it would have been the size of the iPhone 7/8. Instead it's even larger then the plus size.. This thing is way too fucking big. Sorry.

Also, I really don't like the removal of TouchID and generally the phone seems less capable due to the removal of the home button.

I'm really getting tired of all these companies racing to the full-retard top of super sized overly large phones.

Give me an iPhone SE sized device with the full front OLED display and the latest CPU. Why can't we go back to a size that makes more sense?

I have a 6 Plus, but I really only upgrade because my last phone broke, and I am more than content with it. My upgrade cycle is pretty much dependent on when my kids break my phone.

The body of the phone is just a tiny bit bigger than the regular iPhone 7/8. The reason the screen is so "big" is because it has an 18:9 aspect ratio instead of 16:9.

It's smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus. It's rather long though, just like how Note 8 and S8+ are long.

You're looking at SCREEN SIZE and not the actual dimensions. The X is ALL SCREEN. But it's not even half an inch larger than the iphone 7.

Iphone X: 5.65x2.79x0.30 inches
Iphone 7: 5.44x2.64x0.28 inches
